Dinner at 6:30 PM Meeting at 7:30 PM

Our Guest: Dennis Conklin, AI8P, will be travelling up to Mahle’s Restaurant and Lounge from Norton, Ohio, to tell us about his experiences as a Roving Operator during the recent OSPOTA. Nominations Closing Soon Nominations are still open for anyone interested in running for the office of Trustee. If you are interested in run-ning for Trustee, or want to nominate someone for the office or are interested in running yourself, please contact Ken, KG8DN, or Eddie, KD8FTS, at the numbers listed to the left of this article. Nomi-nations will remain open through the end of the August membership meeting.

The Sky is Falling and the Sun is Going Away Well, not really. But, our ancestors panicked at the sight of a total solar eclipse. A total solar eclipse will be traversing the United States on Monday, August 21. If you want to see the sun completely covered by the moon, you will have to travel south and/or west. In Cleveland, the partial eclipse will begin at 1:06 P.M., reach maximum at 2:31 P.M., and end at 3:51 P.M., all times in EDT. At max in Cleveland about 85% of the sun will be covered. This will be a spectacular sight.

Remember, for viewing the eclipse you will need proper glasses for looking at the sun. While multiple layers of sunglasses or improvised materials may reduce the visible brightness of the sun, most will not sufficiently reduce the UV light which could result in sunburn inside the eye and permanent damage. Below are a couple of links to news and lists of location hosting viewing parties:

Meetings The July meeting was held at LEARA’s usual picnic location, in the Brecksville Reservation at the Harriet Keeler Memorial Picnic area. It was a great time for socialization. For those who wanted to try their hand at foxhunting, Ken KG8DN brought a hidden transmitter and

three sets of fox hunting gear. These sets included a two-meter Yagi antenna, an HT, and an offset attenuator. The offset attenuator provides much greater attenuation than one is able to get using a passive attenuator. I saw folks who had never tried foxhunting having a go at it en-joying themselves.

This Month’s meeting will be at Mahle’s Restaurant and Lounge, 24945 Detroit Avenue in Westlake, about two tenths of a mile east of Columbia Road. Reservation and program details are on the front cover.

Until next month, talk on the radio, and use the repeaters. And, come out and see us at a meeting.

Meetings really are a great way to get some face time and social interaction. We look forward to seeing you.

The Wednesday Skywarn Practice Net

Skywarn season runs from March through September. Should the National Weather Service

issue a severe weather alert, a Skywarn net will be started 146.760 repeater. Practice Nets are held

every Wednesday evening at 8:30PM If you would like to contact the Skywarn group send to

[email protected]. Be sure to visit the web page at www.ccskywarn.org for more information

Thursday Net NCOs

We welcome Tom Cramer N8AGM to the Net Con-trol group. Listen for him on an upcoming October net. We can always use more LEARA Members to become Net Control Operators (NCOs). It’s not that difficult to do. It’s a GREAT way to learn the voices and call signs of the members of the club as well as the visitors of the ham community. Why not give the NCO slot a try? It's an easy to learn job that is very important in emergencies (see also the Skywarn Net). Your help is really needed!

So, if you are a LEARA member, please consider joining us as an NCO. We meet every Thurs-day, we learn to lead and test our radio skills, and we all want to help you be the best! Contact Carl ([email protected]) via email to join us and get started. We look forward to your participation!

Carl, KB8VXE

Next ARES meeting 2PM Sunday, September 17, at the Independence branch of the Cuya-hoga County Library system. You do not have to be a member to attend.

Most of you are aware that I am a United States Navy Submarine Veteran. I served from 1962 to 1968. During that time, I at-tended my rating "A" School for Electrician's Mate, Basic Submarine School, Nuclear Power School (Theory), then Nuclear Power School Prototype (Hands-on Power Plant & Propulsion). I served on two Submarines. The USS Hali-but - SSGN587 for 9 months (then off to the Nuclear Power schools), then the PRECOM unit for the USS Flasher- SSN613. This was the Pre-Commissioning crew before commis-sioning. This was from October 1964 until the end of January 1968. I joined the United States Submarine Veter-ans, Inc. (USSVI) about 2001, and was in the USS Cod Base in Cleve-land. We hold most of our meetings down at or on the USS Cod downtown by East 9th Street and the North Marginal.

On Saturday July 22, 2017, we held our annual picnic and cookout down at the Cod. We did this with the USS Cod Crew of workers and volunteers as partners. There were also two reunions of Submarine Veter-ans being held at the same time in town. They were invited to attend as a group function for them. There was a group of Sub-vet Motorcyclists from the Cincinnati area, and other Subvet members from Toledo, Co-lumbus, Pittsburgh bases, and from the Wilkes-bare PA area. About 250 people were fed burgers, hot dogs, and sau-sage sandwiches, plus extras that families brought to share. There were also two cakes for the picnic to commemorate the 75th anni-versary of the laying of the keel of the Cod on July 21, 1942. Fellow shipmate of Cod Base and new inductee Pat Conroy is shown cutting the cake(s) with me Also at this annual function, is the time when new members are inducted into the Holland Club. This distinction and honor is for those USSVI members that first qualified in Submarines 50 years ago. I was one of those inducted this year. I qualified and received my Silver Dolphins while aboard the USS Flasher on June 18, 1967. I received two certificates denoting the Hol-land Club Award (One from the National Hol-land Club Office, and the other from my USS Cod Base), a Holland Club Patch that will go on my SubVets vest, a Holland Club Lapel pin, a yellow Holland Club Ball Cap, and a Holland Club Challenge Coin. As I was returning to my seat after being in-ducted, I was called back up front by the president and curator of the USS Cod Organ-

ization. I was then presented with a Cod Jacket for the volunteer work that I have done

over the years. Beautiful jacket! This one thing I was going to bring up at the ceremony, but time and loud background noise would have made it impossible for the people & shipmates to hear... I call it "Coincidences?" On this day, July 22, 1966 the USS Flasher, SSN613 was Commissioned in Groton, Con-necticut. On June 18, 1967, I received my Silver Dol-phins for being qualified on the USS Flasher, SSN613, and my Certificate and wallet-sized ID card stating the same. Those items were signed by Kenneth M. Carr, CDR, Commanding Officer of the USS Flasher, SSN613. Now today, July 22, 2017, I am inducted into the Holland Club, 51 years after the USS Flasher SSN613 was commissioned, at this beautiful WWII Submarine, the USS Cod SS224 in Cleveland, Ohio where I am a member of the USSVI Cod Base. As a final note, I am saddened that this event today could not come “Full Circle”. On No-vember 15, 2015 VADM Kenneth M. Carr went on Eternal Patrol while living in Chagrin Falls, Ohio. He was my traveling companion for two USS Flasher reunions, and also a

http://www.arrl.org/news/view/father-of-competitive-radio-in-ussr-boris-stepanov-ru3ax-sk

07/29/2017 The man known as the “Father of Competitive Radio” in the former Soviet Union, Boris Stepanov, RU3AX (ex-UW3AX), of Moscow, Russia, died on July 28, after a lengthy illness. He was 76. A prolific writer, Stepanov was the deputy editor of Radio magazine. He also at-tended International Amateur Radio Union Region 1 conferences as a member of Central Radio Club and SRR delegations. Stepanov’s obituary credits him with developing the World Radiosport Team Championship (WRTC) format, and he was one of the judges at the first WRTC in 1990 in the Seattle area.

A graduate of the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology, Stepanov became involved in Amateur Radio since the early 1950s, first as an SWL, and then becoming UW3AX in 1960. Stepanov developed regular HF Amateur Radio competitions in the USSR and was involved in the project that put Amateur Radio aboard the Mir space station. He is credited with 1,000 publi-cations on Amateur Radio and broadcasting topics and of several books. Stepanov again visited the US in 1991. On that trip he accompanied Russian cosmonaut Musa Manarov, U2MIR/UV3AM, to speak with radio amateurs and to stop at that year’s ARRL South Texas Convention in Houston as well as at ARRL Headquarters.
