the spire Passionate Worship:
By Paul Boughton
Passionate worship is one of the most
important signs of a healthy church. It
ignites people to invite others as it
welcomes and draws those visitors into the celebration of God. To continue to
improve, the church council over the past
year has begun to look at what it means to
be a church that is alive, energized and
growing in the love and knowledge of God through worship. We met with nationally
renowned worship consultants, attended
workshops, had 'mystery worshippers'
come, and prayed for God's guidance. As
a result of this process of discernment, we
are ready for implementation of the beginning steps.
Changes to our traditional services will
begin in a relatively modest way, even as
we are in a continual process of evaluating all three services. By August 24th, you
will notice some things such as:
pre-worship music playing in the
Atrium and Sanctuary
announcements will be projected;
improved in-house video production
emphasis on Spirited Traditional
worship that is celebratory and energized
there will be some changes in the order
of worship

continued assessment of differentiating between the
three traditional services.
Changes to EnterLife: Although it is a very difficult
decision, the EnterLife service will have its last service on
July 27th. It has been a warm and loving service for
many years, but attendance has been lagging for a while.
We offer thanks to those who have helped in that worship service; bless those who go to seek a contemporary
worship elsewhere; and pray for the core team as they
began their work.
By stopping, this allows a core group of folks to put lots of attention and time into the process to determine if we can
fulfill a need for a non-traditional worship that will grow,
focused on our mission field - those who are not attending
a church - as well as those at FUMC. We will use the best
practices possible. This will take at least 6 months, and the council will keep communicating on progress.
We ask for all of your prayers and trust that God will
guide us as we go down this path.

Serve Sunday 2014
By George Anagnos
Serve Sunday will be held on
September 7, 2014 and we have lined up a lot of exciting projects
to serve the community. We will
have a one hour church service starting at 9:00, and then will
leave the church to go to our chosen projects. This year Serve
Sunday will include all the community projects that we as a
congregation do during the year. If you help a neighbor by cutting
their lawn, run them to the
doctor’s office or do the grocery shopping for a shut in, keep track
of your hours. We will be able to have multiple projects at one
location or at different location throughout the St Charles and St
Louis Counties. The Serve Sunday committee has
been working very hard to line up
projects in and around our community. We have talked to
the team leader and will need their help in contacting the people
at their chosen project location and define the project. The team
leaders will also be responsible to provide the number of people
needed at each location.
If you are grateful for feeling
blessed, now is a time to give
back all the blessing that the Lord
has given you. Registration for
the Serve Sunday projects will be
a v a i l a b l e s o o n o n t h e
fumcstcharles.org website. It will
give you a listing of all the
projects to pick your favorite sight
and have a form to record your
name, address, phone numbers,
and emergency contacts. You
may prefer the committee help
you record all your information.
We will be in the Atrium on
Sunday August 17th and August
24th with enrollment forms.
Help Us Contact By Mike Waller
We are in the process of contacting persons for whom we have not seen any church
activity for the past 2-3 years as part of our preparation for charge conference. We do not have valid
addresses for the following members. If you have an address or a way to contact them, please inform the church office.
Tracy Shinn, Ryan Arthur, Kristi Baker, Jean Covington, David
and Sarah Craig, Jennifer Garten, Sonja Hess, Richard and
Nancy Houke, Rachel Huster, Kesha Jackson, and Michael and
Suzanne Stevens.
United Methodist Men By Jerry Jones
The August meeting of United Methodist Men will be held at the
Golden Corral restaurant 1850
Zumbehl Rd. The date is Saturday, Aug. 9 at 8:00 a.m. A
short business meeting will be held before breakfast. All
men are cordially invited to attend.
ARE YOU A MACY’S
SHOPPER? By Dee Dee Kassel
You can shop and support UMW at the same time! This
year FUMC United Methodist Women are selling Macy’s Shop for a Cause Coupons to support our missions. THE
COUPONS WILL BE $5 EACH AND ARE TO BE USED ON A
SPECIAL SHOPPING DAY – Saturday, August 23, only.
Shoppers can use the coupon to receive a 25% discount
on most items in the store including those not usually
discounted with regular Macy’s coupons. The great part of this deal is that UMW gets the whole $5 from each
coupon. Macy’s gets none of the proceeds. This is a
great way to complete back- to -school shopping or begin
Christmas shopping while helping a good cause.
All UMW members will have coupons to sell from Aug. 6-
22. Plus there will be a table in the atrium to purchase
the coupons during the first 3 Sundays in August. Help us
sell all 200 coupons we have been allotted! If you have
questions, please contact Dee Dee Kassel at [email protected].

Festival of Sharing Begins! By George W Anagnos
It’s that time of the year again, and our church will begin to collect
the Festival of Sharing Kits. These kits benefit those in Missouri in
need as well as some that are for international relief. Please stop by our table in the Atrium to choose a tear off for one of 4 kits
that we will be collecting this year.
The following are the type of kits we need:

toothpaste, 6 oz. or more, dental floss-any size. Place items inside a 1 gallon zip lock bag.
MO PAPER Products Packs: 3 pkgs. toilet tissue (4 double rolls), 2 rolls paper towels, 2
facial tissues (large rectangular boxes). Place all items in a tall kitchen trash bag labeled “Paper Products Pack.”
MO Baby Bundle Pack: 2 receiving blankets, 2 undershirts or onesies, 1 sweater or sweatshirt, 2 sleepers ( 1 piece or gown), 8-12 diapers (cloth or disposable), 2 diaper pins ( if
cloth diapers are enclosed). 1 warm sweater or sweatshirt. Please send newborn to 6 month
sized items. Place items in a 2 gallon Ziploc bag. (2or2.5 gallon bags have been found at the following stores: full line grocery stores and Target.
MO Readin’ & Writin’ Pack: 6 new pencils with erasers, 2 ink pens (medium point), 1 pencil holder, 6 folders with pockets, 1 pair of child-sized metal scissors, 2 spiral or tape

Operation Back Pack Is On The Roll Again!! By Kathy Avery
The Outreach Committee would like to thank everyone who was involved with this wonderful mission that we began last September. It was
successful beyond our wildest dreams and we saw God’s hand guiding
and providing every step of the way.
To let you know how we served the children in need at Null and Monroe
Elementary Schools last year, we have looked at our numbers. We sent
home over 760 back pack sacks, serving up to 22 children (the number varied throughout the year). We collected nearly 10,000 food items. 7000 items went in the back packs and
the rest to FISH, Community Care Day, Showers of Blessings, and the Summer Lunch
Program. The children asked if they would get their packs during the summer and we
responded by continuing to deliver for 6 weeks of the summer. We were also blessed with
donations to send home a Christmas stocking with a gift for each child and additional food for their long breaks from the classroom.
The children we are helping have responded with such loving comments. One little boy
told his mom he liked eating healthy food that he got for the weekend. One child is living
in his family’s car this summer and was so excited to get his food even when school was
out! We want this program to continue on this next school year and are ready to get started
again in August. Our pantry is getting very low in food and we are going to start reaching
out to our generous congregation at the end of July to start filling our closet in the Atrium
once again. If you are involved in a group and want to “adopt” one of our kids, like last
year, we are very excited. Below is a list of the foods that we need for these children.
Remember, it has to be food they can make on their own. Thank you all, again, for your loving help.

going to happen on the front lawn of the First United Methodist Church. The Back to School party will be held this year on the

This year we will also have a St. Charles Fire truck and a special added feature a mobile eye exam/screening.
We will be moving chairs and tables on Friday, August 1 at 6:30 p.m. into our staging area.
Saturday morning at 7:30 a.m. we will move all of the table and chairs on to the front lawn, set up the games, and the bounce games. We will also need help with the setting up and
