The year has started with a bang. The temperatures have ranged in one week from low teens to highs in the 70’s. This is shaping up to be an interesting, 2017. Don’t let it catch you sliding in the wrong directions. The Product Show and Seminar can help point you in the

right direction. It is a great opportunity to meet new vendors and learn what’s new, what products other areas are using, and what changes have been made. It is easy to get lost in vast information on the web. I have found it helpful to have people I can call who know their systems and can point me in the right direction. The seminar, “Building with Strength – Concrete Value and Innovations”, is also great opportunity to learn more about current practices in the concrete industry. Attend this seminar and see how you can improve your knowledge and use of concrete.

Please start promoting the Show and Seminar. We have less than a month to go and everyone you meet is potential attendee. It is very important that our Product Show is a success. This event sets the tone for how we operate the rest of the year and next. The Show is FREE. Yes, that’s right, no cost to you for a chance to learn something new and have a great lunch.

The Gulf States Region Conference is, April 20-22, in Memphis, Tennessee. This is our only

I highly encourage you to attend if you have not before, especially current board members. You will have a great opportunity to network with people from across the Gulf States Region, share ideas, and further your knowledge of CSI so that you can tell someone, “WHY CSI!”

The Construction Site Investigators Test Test your knowledge

Being able to understand and interpret written construction documents is key to a successful project. By understanding the roles and relationships of all participants, CDTs help to improve communication among all members of the construction team.

1. Contract time is the period of time for the work of the construction contract from the date of commencement to the date of

Betina Latiker and Charlene Dunaway enjoying the Chattanooga Chapter 50th Anniversary Party on January 21. John Dunaway, John Murray, and Keith West also attended.

Floods are the number one natural disaster in the United States. All 50 states have experienced floods or flash floods. Due to climate change and other factors, flood events are increasing in number and intensity. To protect the health, safety, and welfare of homes and their occupants during a flood event, homes must be built into compliance with local, state, and federal codes a nd regulations. This course describes floodplains and the potential hazards to buildings. The course also defines the differences between engineered and non-engineered flood openings and their ability to ensure resilient structures. This program will clarify regulations, codes, and standards

Learning Objectives:

Describe floods, floodplains, and the

potential hazards to buildings.

Explain the differences between wet

floodproofing and dry floodproofing techniques and acceptable applications.

Describe the role of flood openings in flood

events to ensure resilient structures

Identify regulations, codes, and standards

as they relate to sustaining foundations in flood hazard areas.

Analyze the role of building compliance in

securing lowering flood insurance rates and what mitigation solutions are available.

Paint Shield, by Sherwin Williams, does more than just cover walls. It’s the first EPA-registered microbicidal paint with exclusive patented technology that kills 99.9% of indicated pathogens within 2 hours of exposure on painted surfaces. It continues to kill 90% of these bacteria even after repeated contamination on painted surfaces. The effectiveness lasts for up to four years as long as the integrity of the surface is maintained.

Why You'll Love It

Paint Shield’s active ingredient is a well-

studied and highly regarded quaternary ammonium compound.

Interior latex paint features great hide and

durability.

Paint Shield can be

applied on interior hard, non-porous ceilings, walls, doors and trim.

Available in 550

colors in our popular Egg-Shell finish.

Build with Strength Concrete Value and Innovations February 22, 2017 See more on Page 6 A prime ingredient of sustainable architecture is longevity. If a building doesn't last, it wastes a lot of energy, from both a human and a resource perspective, not to mention the economic value. Barriers to designing concrete structures increasingly collapse when industry professionals are equipped with the right design tools and knowledge. Through design solutions demonstrated in this workshop, we can focus on strength rather than disaster response, resulting in investments that are secure and generate long-term value to the owners.

This workshop will explore:

Emerging trends in housing and

development Innovations in concrete construction

Case studies that showcase building value

generation

Economical design of concrete wall and

floor systems

How to utilize existing, free resources to

design structures

Smart Vent Products, Inc. was born in 1997 out of the idea to create a flood vent to comply with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), and all National and State Construction Codes. Since 1986, flood vents have been a requirement for enclosed spaces below the Base Flood Elevation (BFE) but no one had stepped up to evaluate what was available to meet the requirements. At the time, the only available solution to relieve hydrostatic pressure was a foundation air vent. These air vent devices had some issues, including louvers, grills, screens, and other covers that impede the flow of floodwater and most importantly they would clog with debris yielding the vent useless during a flood event.

Our knowledge and expertise, through our team of Certified Floodplain Managers and Engineers, has led us to our next chapter in floodplain problem solving. Rising flood insurance rates across the country are causing many financial hardships. A new division of Smart Vent Products called the Flood Risk Evaluator, was recently born to evaluate and provide a detailed report on what can be done to reduce these rising flood insurance premiums.
