In many ways the late 1970s doesn’t seem like all that long ago. Yet, having recently

completed Fiscal Year 2018, the Carlsbad Community Foundation is looking back at 40 years of service to our community. To say that the world has changed is certainly an

understatement. Among everything that has transpired in our town and in our world, the Foundation has been right there, growing and looking out for our long-term needs.

Many organizations have come and gone in that time, but the

Foundation has been enduring. One thing that sets us apart is the fact that through the Foundation, legacies live on. Whether the legacy is born of philanthropic giving or is established in memory of someone special through a named endowment fund, it continues to tell the story of people in our community, well beyond their lifetimes.

Many of the legacies belong to people we did not know. They may have passed away many years ago, but I cherish the opportunity to learn and share their stories to the benefit of others.

Every day, the generous nature of our community is demonstrated to me by people who care about what happens here today and in the future. To all those who give, I thank you for what you do for Carlsbad and South Eddy County. Our gifts, both great and small, ensure that we not only continue community legacies, but build new ones, as well.

Forty years from now, my hope is that people will continue to regard the Carlsbad Community Foundation as the place where legacies live.

Mike Antiporda is the executive director at the Carlsbad Community Foundation

hen the Carlsbad Regional Medical Center, a Wnonprofit hospital, sold to a for-profit hospital, the assets needed to be directed to charitable purposes. The hospital’s administrator, John Mills had a vision to create a charitable foundation and the hospital’s Board of Directors agreed. After a period of transition, the Foundation was established to support health-related needs. In time, however, the Foundation’s mission was expanded and as a community foundation seeks to improve the lives of people in our community in many ways.

A more detailed account of the Foundation’s history over the years is being published and will be available at the Foundation’s 2018 Community Reception on September 13. We hope you will join us in celebration of the Foundation’s on-going charitable mission.

1978 - Dr. Earl Flanagan - First recipient of the

Foundation’s Humanitarian of the Year Award

1980 - State Senator Don Kidd and Executive Director John Mills

1969 - In his will, A.J. Crawford left $500,000 to Carlsbad Memorial Hospital. Eventually, that gift would be part of what would become the Foundation nearly a decade later.

1987 - Walter Gerrells presents the Special

Recognition Award to Lynn and Jean Burton

1997 - Board Members: Jed Howard, Vicki Moutray, Nancy Beard, Barbara Duffin, Bruce Pardue, David Chavez, Sherry Griffin, Paula Renfrow and Neal Dungan. Board member Robert Murray, II, is not in the photo.

2002 - Jim Trower, Larry Henderson, Bob and Diane Havel, and Mary Gold Thomas were among the volunteers who kept the Lifeline Program running smoothly. The Foundation managed the program until 2012.

he Foundation has completed its non-traditional Tscholarship award cycle for 2018. The focus of these scholarships are students who are continuing their college studies or perhaps are returning to college studies from either home or career paths. Students of all ages applied in June.

Scholarships were available for all academic majors and vocational students, but there were numerous for nursing and education. We are proud to support our local continuing students.

Executive Director Mike Antiporda presents a grant to Beth Nieman of the Carlsbad Public Library in support of the Summer Reading Program.

he Foundation is once again serving as fiscal Tsponsor for the Carlsbad Mayor’s Energy Summit Committee. The Summit will be held September 6 at the Walter Gerrells Civic Center Annex. Through our efforts, we aim to bring together leaders in the energy industry and members of the community to learn about and discuss the energy-related issues that are important to us all.

The topics are often varied and may include jobs, economic outlook, highway safety and many other important subjects. In conjunction with the Summit, the Carlsbad Department of Development will also be hosting a job fair later that day at the Eddy County Fire Training Center.

The Foundation also partnered with the committee this year to host the online registration and sponsor sign-up on our Web site. Registration is free by visiting the Summit Resource Page on the Foundation’s Web site:

he Foundation has completed its non-traditional Tscholarship award cycle for 2018. The focus of these scholarships are students who are continuing their college studies or perhaps are returning to college studies from either home or career paths. Students of all ages applied in June.

Scholarships were available for all academic majors and vocational students, but there were numerous for nursing and education. We are proud to support our local continuing students.
