Caught by Surprise By Diana KimOther than the outstanding performance by the Wichita Shockers this season – Go Shox! –, we shouldn’t forget about other happenings within Wichita. It seems cliché to say that children are inneed here, yet it’s becoming a huge issue in Wichita. I stumbled upon an article, I learned that graduation rates from high schools in Wichita have dropped from 76.4% to 61%. This is a huge drop. Regardless, with this in mind, schools have tried harder regimens and plans to raise the graduation rates.

But what doesn’t seem to be understood is that maybe it isn’t always the way the program is set up, but the children’s way of understanding and perceiving new material. With time comes change, and the way children learn won’t always be the same as it was in 2000.

Usually 3rd – 7th graders are the ones who need concentration help and attention. These are the years when bad habits are formed and the persistence of these habits will only solidify in high school. So what can we do? – What could I do? It seemed there wasn’t much I could do if it wasn’t for Mr. Nesmith’s tutoring opportunity that was spoken of a couple weeks ago.I went a couple of times due to curiosity, and it has been one of the most uplifting experiences I have ever had. That seems a tad exaggerated, but I’m just trying to be honest. I never thought teaching something so elementary could be fun in any possible way. The moment when a child understands something with ecstatic eyes is something

that can be remembered. Their accomplishment is also your accomplishment.

Since I cannot be a hundred people at once, I will say that I do not know if this feeling comes to everyone, although I wish it did. Tutoring is scheduled usually on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:30 to 7:00. Each individual child gains so much from a personal tutor. These special relationships grow gradually throughout the experience, but unfortunately seem to be something that is consistently overlooked. The last couple of weeks have been wonderful to me. I have helped complete multiple math assignments, and a zebra research paper. Very eventful. But the one thing that caught me by surprise was how much I enjoyed it. So I say, indulge in all opportunities, not because you have to, but for a chance to find an unexpected passion.

For all you non-Jews out there (a.k.a. 99.99% of the school), Passover is the celebration ofthe Jewish exodus from Egypt. To commemorate this holiday, in tradition of the type of breadin which the Israelites ate when they left Egypt, Jews around the world will stop eating anyleavened grain. This includes wheat, barley, rye, oats, spelt and their derivatives. Now, for you toget in the spirit of Passover, you can make this kosher, flour-free desert.

Put 1 cup of chocolate chips and 1/2 cup butter ina bowl, microwave until melted. Pour in a bowl, and then stir in the following: 3/4 cup granulated sugar, 1 to 2 teaspoons espresso powder, 1 teaspoon vanilla extract, and 3 large eggs. Stir until smooth. Finally, add 1/2 cup cocoa powder and mix just to combine. Grease an 8” round cake pan, and line it with parchment. Bake the cake for 25 minutes at 375 degrees.

What to Look Forward To….Until SummerBy Ellen Oehmke.As we all know, the last month and a half of school is the worst. We just got back from spring break and are excited for summer. But, we need to remember that there still are some exciting things that we have to look forward to before summer! Coming up tomorrow, we have ISAS in Austin. For those of you not going, such as myself, do not fret. It is a lovely time being able to stay home and sleep in. Then, on April 20th, we have PROM!! One of the best events of the year (sorry freshmen and sophomores). It’s an opportunity for guys to get their creativity going and ask in a fun way. Then there is after prom, which is supaaaa fun. There are a lot of fun games to play and you get a free t-shirt. Who doesn’t love Collegiate t-shirts?? Then, get ready for it, in May we get to take AP Tests!!! One of the second best events of the year because for one day you get to miss a class to take a two hour test! Trust me, it’s a good time. Then don’t forget about finals! Even better! But, in actuality, there still are some things to look forward to after prom. For seniors, we have graduation and the senior trip. Some excellent bonding time with your frienemies. Then for everyone else… There’s Honors Day… So be excited for the last month and a half of school, it’s gonna be GREEEAATTT!

After taking a trip to the dentist last week, I rediscovered how much I hate and fear the dentist. This is a type of phobia, also known as Dentophobia. Although it always seems that Denstists tend to laugh this off.... Anyhow, after some research on fear there, apparently there are some extremely common phobias in the United states. Such include Arachnophobia (fear of spiders) and Acrophobia (fear of heights.) I’m sure most of you students and faculty are quite familiar with the City of Eastborough. If you are not, then you should probably familiarize yourself with it. It is usually quite easy to find this 256 acre city on a map. In fact it is probably rare to not see the entire city crossed out on most maps… The reason forthat: 20mph speed limit. On top of that Eastborough’s cops will not hesitate to pull someone over for going 21 down Douglas. But wait… things are about to get a lot worse…

Last Saturday the Eastborough city council met to discuss their outrage at the absurd amount of crimes taking place within the citythis last year. At the conclusion of the meeting, the City council members announced their plans to help lower the annual crime by 66%. Yes, that’s right, these plans once initiated, are expected to bring the annual crimes in Eastborough down from 3 to 1. You might be asking yourself how they can evenexpect to accomplish this feat; well to them it is very simple two-step process.

First: the city plans to lower their speed limits. Since 20mph seems to be a little on the ludicrous side of things, the city council

decided 10mph is much better suited for the city. “In turn this should cut the moving violations in half, and keep people like this off the road” stated one Eastborough officer in the midst of issuing speeding violations to a group of 10 year olds on their bicycles.

The second and even more menacinglaw the city is looking to put in place is the curfew at the city park. The curfew which states all

visitors are prohibited after 11:00pm will be changed to say: “no visitors 12:00am to 12:00am.” Also riding the coat tail of this law is the installment of water-boarding as a punishment for feeding the ducks.
