• Approximately 38 million people died in WWI, this includes soldiers and civilians

• Approximately 50 million people died from the Flu in 1918• That was 5% of the world’s population

THE SPANISH FLU ACTUALLY ORIGINATED IN CHINA

• Due to wartime censorship, most newspapers didn’t print the truth about deaths from the flu

-- they didn’t want their enemies to see a possibility of weaknessSince Spain was neutral they had no censorship and reported their flu deaths in the newspapers

It is believed that workers from China brought the flu with them when they came to France and Canada to contribute to the war effort
