On that first Easter Sunday, I find myself wondering what Jesus was referring to
when he said to the two men on the Emmaus Road:
“’How foolish you are, and how slow of heart to believe all that the prophets
have spoken! Did not the Christ have to suffer these things and then enter his
glory?’ And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them
what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself.”
(Luke 24:25-27 NIV84)
And then later that evening in the Upper Room, when he declared:
"‘This is what I told you while I was still with you: Everything must be
fulfilled that is written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the
Psalms.’ Then he opened their minds so they could understand the
Scriptures.” (Luke 24:45-47 NIV84)
I would have guessed that Jesus was referring to the prophets like Isaiah (53),
Jeremiah (31), and Zechariah (9), and Psalms like 22 and 110. But Moses and the
law? However my confidence grew when until we started working our way through
the Old Testament book of Exodus. That history of God’s rescue of Israel from their
bondage in Egypt for service and worship of the Lord describes the birth of that
nation. Alec Motyer wrote regarding how an Israelite might sum up Exodus:
We were in a foreign land, in bondage, under the sentence of death. But our
mediator—the one who stands between us & God—came to us with the
promise of deliverance. We trusted in the promises of God, took shelter under
the blood of the lamb, & he led us out. Now we are on the way to the
Promised Land. We are not there yet, of course, but we have the law to guide
us, & through blood sacrifice we also have his presence in our midst. So he
will stay with us until we get to our true country, our everlasting home.
But then Motyer concluded,
"Now think about it - a Christian today could say the same thing, almost word
for word."1
Read that paragraph again, and you will realize Motyer is absolutely right.
Our study of Exodus is not simply learning ancient history; it is about learning Jesus -
another definition of discipleship. We hear ‘echoes of exodus’2 all through the gospels
as we consider the person and work of Christ, and his call for us to follow him.
During the rest of May and into early June we will continue to listen to Moses as we
wrestle with the meaning of Exodus for our life together.
See you Sunday! Bill

PS – I am grateful that May brings several opportunities for us to be
encouraged and challenged by others to trust Jesus as he leads us in daily life. Janice
Baily and Maribeth Coote will be speaking on Mother’s Day on May 12; Dan
Weightman, Director of the Caribbean Youth Network, will be with us on May 26.

Discipleship & Fellowship by Becky Juliano
How does God make a difference when we struggle with making big decisions, dealing with
cancer, understanding our culture, and other tough scenarios?
Come spend Sundays mornings in the month of May. wrestling with what we know to be
true of God and his attributes and how that connects with the struggles, questions, and crisis
we encounter.
We’ll spend an hour in small group discussions talking about God in the context of a variety
of real-life scenarios. Neat and tidy answers aren’t the goal but rather honest wrestling with truth and its
application. Class will start at 9 AM in the Assembly Room.
For more information, contact Becky Juliano ([email protected], 518-788-8768).
Adult Discipleship Hour: If God is God then…
Every Sunday during the summer months (June, July, and August) there
will be a time of snacks and fellowship following worship. We call it
CONNECT.
We are in need of individuals and families each week to help supply
some of the snacks for these times.
Please contact Becky Juliano ([email protected]) to sign up. You will not need to provide enough
snacks for everyone. There will be several people bringing items each week.

trained)
Kids in Kindergarten through those who have just
completed 5th grade
Who do we need? You!
Crew leaders (teens or adults)

to transform 1st Pres into an African safari!)
“Roar” VBS is coming to First Pres

and so we need your help!
Starting in May, we will begin to put some decorations
together to transform the church into an African Safari.

volunteers to create important decorations. No artistic
skill is needed, but if you have some that would be a
great bonus!
Please contact me (Becky Juliano) if you are willing to
spend some time (an hour or two or a Saturday morning)
making decorations. Duties may include painting,
cutting, tracing, building a huge tree or two a waterfall or
an African hut.
Also contact me (via text or email with pictures) if you
have anything that we might be able to use as part of our
decorations, think African safari (or just Google search
“Roar VBS decorating” to get some ideas).

Our church-wide purpose is: “Bringing Hope to Life in Jesus’
Name”. If giving is a part of your life you hope to change this
year, realize financial stewardship is a basic step toward a spir-
itual relationship with Christ. “If you are untrustworthy about
worldly wealth, who will trust you with the true riches of heav-
en?” Luke 16:11 NLT. A powerful truth, God stating there is a
direct relationship between the ways we manage our money
and the fullness of our spiritual life.
