difference right here where we live. “Making a differ-ence in the world” ranks right up there at the top of the list of reasons people choose their faith communities- right next to meaningful worship services.

Technology?

I remember carrying cassette tapes (along with the tape recorder) to homebound members so they could enjoy the audio version of the worship service- and that was cutting edge! Now, streaming and Youtube bring the whole sanctuary to us. And what about all that technolo-gy available to us in other ways. Are we more likely to read mail that arrives in the mailbox by our front door or the mail that lights up our screens? When it’s time to remind people of a meeting, do we phone, email, text, or send a PM message on Facebook.

Life is coming at us fast, and the word on the street is “be nimble”. If the church wants to be as important in the future as it has been in the past we need to be keenly aware of how the world is changing. In order to share the message of God’s promise of grace and requirement to do justice in the name of Jesus, we have to be light on our feet.

So, I invite us all to join together with the Future Story team to help us envision ministry emanating from Christian Temple five years down the road! Together we can turn what might otherwise be a scary future into an exciting adventure!

Shalom,

Rick

EXTRA! EXTRA! READ ALL ABOUT IT!

“Christian Temple Hosts Community Groups in newly purchased Catonsville Storefront”

“Christian Temple Finds Path to Growth by Merging with Other Congregations”

“Christian Temple designs Sunday Evening Dinner Worship for Those Who Aren’t Sure

About Traditional Church”

Don’t worry, folks. This is fake news! All of these headlines came out of my head with the help of our newly formed Future Story Team, named by the official board.

These are all hypothetical headlines that may or may not appear in the Catonsville Times in April, 2023. Their purpose isn’t to predict the future, but to help us wonder together about how the church and our community might change in just five short years.

The ancient wisdom, “no one steps in the same river twice” has never been more true than it is now for the church.

Take worship. All of us who used to come to church out of obligation, or because there wasn’t much else to do on Sunday morning, now have tons of options. Soccer games, coffee shops, the garden, or just sleep-ing in a little on the one day we have to ourselves, have changed the landscape of what used to be the church’s special purview. At the same time, many of us hunger for the kind of connections and community the church offers- being in real time and space with other real people who care that we are there.

Or how about Christian Education?

While traditional Sunday school, Vacation Bible School, mid-week evening Bible studies and youth groups are being squeezed into small compartments of our kids’ busy schedules (somewhere between Japanese lessons and Yoga for Kids!) parents are say-ing now more than ever how they want their kids to know the stories of Jesus- how they want their kids to hang out with other kids they can trust.

Mission?

Once upon a time we enjoyed stories of people serv-ing God in faraway places and could be counted on to give money to those efforts. Now we want to make a

Cinco de Mayo (a day late!)

Please join us after worship on

Sunday, May 6th,

for an EMC celebration.

We will also recognize the

10 Year Anniversary of our

“new” sanctuary!

Don’t Wait! Register for Vacation Bible School Now

We want to invite children from age 4 through those completing 5th grade to this year’s Vacation Bible

School (VBS), called Rolling River Rampage: Experience the Ride of a Lifetime with God. VBS will take

place from June 18-22 from 9 am-12 noon right here at Christian Temple. Kids will experience a Bible-

based good time in a camping/rafting environment as they learn the many ways they can experience God

in their lives. We will have a week filled with Bible stories, music, mission projects, crafts, science, a rep-

tile show, games, and a puppet show! It helps us out if you register now so that we can make sure we

have adequate volunteers and supplies for all the children who would like to attend.

To register for VBS, go to http://rrr.cokesburyvbs.com/CTemple or pick up a registration form at church.

For more information, contact Donna Goon at 410-750-1936 or at [email protected]. You may also

contact the church office at 410-747-2041.

Here’s An Updated List of Supplies We Still Need for VBS

Thanks to those of you who have brought in supplies for VBS! Here is a current list of things you might

have around the house that you could donate or lend to us. There is a purple box in the Gathering where

you can place these items:

• Stickers—Generic camping, rafting, outdoor themes

• Paper cups, 8oz. or larger (can’t be plastic)

• Freezer Paper

• Glitter paint

• Tracing paper

• Hula Hoops

• Empty Pizza box

• Craft Sticks (like popsicle sticks)

• 2 Liter Soda Bottles with caps (empty)

• Clear packing tape

• Bottle of white vinegar (Large)

• Empty peanut butter jars with lids

• Table tennis paddles

• Inflatable Rafts

• Bottle of Dark Cooking Oil

• Bottle of Vegetable Oil

• Liquid Starch

• Package of Cornmeal, 5 lb.

• Kayak or Canoe (for decorating purpos-es)

• Rope (10 ft., skinny but sturdy)

• Clothespins

• Small rocks and sticks

• Steel wire clips

Also, if you have a stash of craft supplies at home that you are no longer using, we’d be glad to come

to your house and pick them up to use for both VBS and our Children at worship programs.

Summer Reading Wish List

At Paul's Place, we try to give our kids as many

summer reading books as we can. We have an

Amazon Wish List of the new books we would like

to get. If you'd like to purchase books for our kids,

we need them delivered to Paul's Place by Friday

May 25th. You can either have them delivered through Amazon, or

purchase them and bring to the church.

The link to our wish list is: https://goo.gl/JnjCBQ

Magic Carpet

The second Saturday in June, artists Jessie Unterhalter and Katey

Truhn will be joining Christian Temple children in designing and

painting a sidewalk mural for the Christian Temple community

playground. (The Magic Carpet) This project is to connect our

children to the community through collaboration and hands on

creation of a public painting. The artwork will enhance the visual

experience of the playground and give the children a sense of

ownership and pride in their environment. Think paint by num-

bers on a bigger scale! The artists will spend several days prepping

the surface, painting in the design, prepping materials etc. On

Saturday June 9 the kiddos will be invited to paint in the design

onto the playground sidewalk. We will be asking the children to

split into two painting teams..

Parents: Tentatively mark your calendars for Saturday June 9th in the morning for a 10:00 time slot or a 12:00 time slot. This is contingent on the counties approval, which we are still waiting for. Stay tuned for more information...

Brochures are available in the Gathering, but the most complete information will be found by visiting www.cccadisciples.org/camp .

NEW this year is an online Camper Registration and Payment System. Access this system by using the following link:

https://app.campdoc.com/!/home/auth/login?r=ccca

This new registration process allows campers/parents to sign up for any of the 2018 CCCA-sponsored camps and conferences, complete medical forms, enter Scholarship and other discount codes, and make payments in one sitting! Although online registration is encouraged, we are still happy to assist you with the traditional registration process if pre-ferred. Contact the church office by phone (410-747-2041) or email ( [email protected] ).

Scholarship applications are located on www.christaintemple.org , in the Gathering, and in this Sower. Please complete an application for each camper your are registering. This will allow you to receive Christian Temple’s scholarship code and a 50% discount. Please return your scholarship appli-cations to the church office by email or drop-off. (Applications are limited to one camp/conference per camper for the season.)

Kitchen Clean-up

• Please clean up immediately following any use of the kitchen.

• All leftover food must be taken home with you. Please do not leave any leftovers in the refrigerator/freezer. They will be removed and likely need to be disposed of immediately. (The exception to this rule will be commercially packaged condiments and sealed bottles of water, juice, etc... These will be tossed out prior to their expiration date.)

• After an event, remove trash bags and place them in the outside trash containers. Remember to securely close the lids.

• Please make sure that counters are cleaned and cleared of food and debris.

• Following directions at the sink area, please wash used cooking and serving items. Do not leave dishes sitting out to air dry. Please towel dry all washed items and put them away properly.

• Please check to make sure that the oven has been turned off.

• Place unused paper products in the pantry.

Thank you for helping us to keep Christian Temple’s

kitchen clean and healthy to use!

Note: Proper food storage is critical and a requirement of the Health Department. Please let the office know if you are planning to place any food in the refrigerator or freezer prior to an event. All food items should be completely wrapped and labeled with your name and event, ingredients, and date of preparation. Unopened, prepackaged commercial food items are okay as long as they have an expiration date and ingredient listing. Please still label these items with your name and event.

(Disciples of Christ). For us, this means that we cherish all God’s children and welcome

everyone to Christ’s table of grace as we ourselves have been welcomed. We are

especially intent on deepening our congregational welcome to anyone for whom church

has not felt like a safe place.

in age, physical and mental abilities, family and economic situations, marital status,

gender, skin color, ethnicity, and political convictions.

Join us as we seek to embody the realm of God through our diversity, celebrate the

grace of God through our worship, and share the love and justice of God from our

doorsteps to the ends of the earth.
