I am on this two-day campout and the bottom of my boot decided to part ways. Like, literally part away from my boot. It’s just a little. I could walk around camp for one or two days with that. But I don’t think they will make it home. Send help. ASAP. - Wardrobe Malfunction

Dear Oswald,

It appears we have received some fan mail from some wandering campers. We called in our

friend Oswald to help us answer them.

Letters to Oswald the Outdoorsy Otter

Dear Wardrobe Malfunction,

I understand what you are going through. I was once too a one boot person after my trip to summer camp... Well, fret no more! I shall give you the secret to eternal boot life - or at least a weekend survival tip. Two words. DUCT. TAPE. Yes, you heard me. Pick a color, any color! Wrap it around the separated area and it’ll be good as new. In fact, you might even find yourself #Trending. When people ask what happened to your boot, just say it’s all the rave. What are you waiting for, you trend setter?

Paw hugs,

Oswald

Dear Chilly Camping,

You need to chill, no pun intended, everything will be all right! I’ve got you covered. Listen closely. THEME. Yes, you heard me. Theme your camp out! It’s wintertime, embrace it with a holiday name. You could even call it “Winter Wonderland” if you want. Now, for this first part to succeed you’re going to need to combine it with some winter events. If a good old game of ultimate and smores by the fire don’t convince them, you should double check if they even have a pulse. However, I’ve also come to notice that letting your crew members come up with events is a great idea seeker! If you’re not sure if they will show up, assign them an event to host. That’ll for sure help their motivation for this amazing camp-out increase!

Paw Hugs,

Oswald

Dear Oswald, I'm planning a camp-out for my Crew in January. It's gonna be really cold and I don't know what activities are good to do on a camp out when its cold. I want everyone to have fun and come to the camp out- help! - Chilly Camping

in Venturing, and it also allows the officers to meet each other in person for the first time! Throughout the term, officers work together and support one another from their respective homes all across the South East, but Orientation is one of the few times the officers can come together in person. Orientation is always one of my personal favorite events because it is the door that opens many lifelong friendships between the SR Officers. Luckily, you can catch us all together again at Winterfest this February!

Riddle Me This 1. Can a Turkey jump higher than the Empire State Building?

Yes – a building can’t jump at all. 2. What did the Turkey say to the Turkey Hunter?

“Quack, Quack!” 3. What’s the best thing to put into pumpkin pie?

Your teeth.

The annual Southern Region Venturing Orientation took place this month in Raleigh North Carolina. All of the Southern Region Officers came together to discuss the future of Venturing in our region, and had lots of fun while doing it! Some of the topics discussed were growing Venturing, effective ways to communicate with youth as well as adults, Venturing and the OA, the SR service initiative, Winterfest, and much more. The annual SR Orientation is vital to the success of venturing in our region because it provides an easy way to discuss important matters

As the 2016 - 2017 term continues, Area 1 has had an incredible step forward! Even though 2016 is soon coming to a close, we have managed to begin it’s close with a bang! Southern Region Venturing Area 1 had its first major Area-Wide Event, Fright Fest! We are glad to say it was a total success. We guess you could say it was a pretty spook-tacular one! This first ever Area-Wide event consisted of a Halloween themed fun camp-out. The event was held at Avondale Scout Reservation in Clinton, LA at the beginning of October. Fright Fest went without a hitch! There was something there for everybody to enjoy, and enjoy they did!

Last Month’s Puzzle Did you help the baby otter retrieve its candy bags? Excellent Job, the baby otter appreciates your help! If you had some difficulties, here’s the solution. You can still help the baby otter enjoy its bags of candy!

The laughs and smiles all across the Venturers said it all as our attendees participated in various activities, from rappelling to even cardboard boat races! If you haven’t had a cardboard boat race, we highly suggest it! The event concluded with an exciting campfire, and as the youngsters say now a day, it was quite a "lit" social. I’m sure that everybody had an excellent time and enjoyed this never before seen Fright Fest; we certainly did! Our first Fright Fest was a complete success, we can't wait or our second! That’s all for now, Area 1 out!

If you're a fan of The Walking Dead, World War Z, Plants vs. Zombies, or even Michael Jackson's "Thriller"- you've thought about what you would do in a zombie apocalypse at least once. While many of us have some sort of basic plan (get out, get a team, go hide, get a twinkie), how many of us are actually prepared with the supplies and skills needed to survive a horde of the living dead? SRV Area 7 came up with the answer- a zombie survival themed weekend called "The Last Venturers" at Camp Powhatan in Hiwassee, Virginia this past weekend.

If you were one of the 170+ survivors in attendance then you learned how to survive in the apocalyptic world with wilderness survival training, land navigation, climbing/rappelling, and other necessary skills! All of which were necessary at the end of the day when a horde of zombies broke into the camp and survivors had to navigate an orienteering course without being infected! If you weren't able to attend this event- fret not! Area 7 Venturing will be hosting another event next year! Shout out to their fantastic training of zombie-survivors!

Try rolling your clothes to save space.

Always carry duct tape. It fixes everything. (At least for the weekend)

Have to place your boots outside of your tent? Place socks inside of them to avoid critters getting inside of them. Adding sage to your campfire/fire pit keeps the mosquitoes and bugs away.

Advisor Minute If you are like me, you are overwhelmed with too much to do and too little time. As you struggle to get caught up, new tasks and responsibilities keep rolling in, like the waves of the ocean. Because of this, you feel that you will never be able to do everything you have to do. For this reason, and perhaps more than ever before, your responsibility as a leader is to select your most important task at each moment, and then to get started on that task, get it done both quickly and effectively. To help you and others be more effective and efficient, we must remember the story about frogs!

Mark Twain once said that if the first thing you do each morning is to eat a live frog, you can go through the day with the satisfaction of knowing that that is probably the worst thing that is going to happen to you all day long. Your “frog” is your biggest, most important task, the one you are mostly likely to procrastinate on if you don’t do something about it. It is also the one task that can have the greatest positive impact on your life and results for you and your Crew, District, Area or Council.

The first rule of frog eating is this: If you have to eat two frogs, eat the ugliest one first.
