o Malay name – first part is the name of the person, this is then separated by bin (male) or binti (female), which mean daughter or son of, followed by the fathers name. Please note variations of Mohd, Muhd are short for Mohamed or Muhammad.

o Religious titles – Haji (male) Hajah (female) these are not names these are titles to denote they have gone to Mecca for the Muslim pilgrimage.

o Chinese names – on transcript the family or last name comes first followed by the name of the person. Normally Chinese names are made up of three parts. But in Malaysia, Chinese might have a Christian name thus having four parts to a name. Example Jessie TEO Chee Hong, Jessie being the Christian name, TEO being the last name/family name and Chee Hong being the given name or first name.

o India names – many are similar as names are general selected based on their birthday. First part is the name of the person, this is then separated by A/P (anak perempan – daughter of) or S/O (son of) followed by the father’s name.

o Malaysian titles or what would be equivalent to a knighthood or Royal commendation. Should be use when writing to the person.

a. Dato’ or Datuk (male) Datin (female) b. Tan Sri (male) Puan Sri (Female) c. Tun (male) Toh Puan (female) – highest titles

Sponsored students Sheffield is a large recipient of sponsored students. However, there are significant change of funding policy in 2015 and maintaining the number of sponsored students has been highly challenging as sponsors are looking at alternative countries to save cost.

Main sponsors for undergraduate and postgraduate students. MARA JPA (Public Service Commission) Bank Negara (Malaysia’s equivalent to the Bank of England) Petronas (National Oil) PNB Tenaga Nasional (Electric)

Sponsored undergraduate students- key points

1. Some students may just put the Malaysian government as their sponsor as some will sometimes have more than one scholarship. They have to decide at some point. Most scholarships will come with a bond of a min 6 years, 10 years for medicine.

2. There are several colleges which offer A levels or IB catering for sponsored students only. However in recent years the government has placed many into the private colleges.

3. a. Government colleges for sponsored students

i. MARA College Banting (IB Programme) ii. MARA College Seremban (A levels but will be launching IB)

iii. KYUEM (A levels) iv. INTECH (Part of the UiTM – A levels) v. University Kuala Lumpur

vi. Kolej Teknology Timur (KTT)

b. Private colleges which have sponsored students. i. Taylor’s College (A levels)

ii. Sunway University iii. KDU (Kolej Damansara Utama – A levels) iv. KTJ (Kolej Tuanku Jaafar – A levels) v. INTI University

Sponsored undergraduate students. These students if they have come from one of the above colleges they are likely to have been earmarked before they start a course to go to a particular country. However the government has just reopened the scheme for students looking for second year entry. These students are normally notified quite late and will need to produce an offer letter to a potential sponsor within a few day notice to secure a scholarship. Students of this nature are predominantly likely to come from UiTM (Universiti Teknologi MARA –note the ‘i’ in the UiTM not to be confused with UTM in the state of Johor Bahru. UiTM have 13 campuses and the student population is around 200K).These students are also likely to be engineering students.

Sponsored postgraduate students PGT You will see an increasing number of lecturers from university colleges (now upgraded to universities) and UniKL applying for PGT masters. We have an agreement working relationship with UniKL). These students are also generally notified quite late that there will be funding for

4. South Australian Matriculation (SAM) – www.SACE.as.gov.au

This programme is the most popular among the G8 Australian universities. The course starts in January and exams are held in November the same year. Students will receive their both a certificate and transcripts before Xmas the same year. Minimum number of contact hours is 120. Taylor’s College they teach 150 hours. Student take a maximum of 5 subjects. None are compulsory, although the subject mix will be

determined based on what they plan to study for a degree. It is recommended students take up English as Second Language and maths. Most Australian

universities will accept this qualification as a substitute for English. Reading the results: For each subject (5 subjects) there is a mark out of 20. The total score is adjusted

and students are given an ATAR score to shows their position in the World for that batch of study. Example, Student with ATAR 80 meaning they are top 20% in the world for that year.

Besides ATAR, we should look at the score out of 20 for pre-requisite subject so we have a clearer indication of the grade obtained for a specific subject.

5. Monash University Foundation Year (MUFY)

Recognition in Australia and other countries. The MUFY qualification is recognized by all Australian and selected U.K and U.S universities. This recognition extends to the branch campuses of foreign universities in Malaysia. Monash has a branch campus in Malaysia.

The course is delivered over two semesters. MUFY offers a choice of 11 subjects. Each subject is divided into Unit 1 and Unit 2. English is compulsory

and all students are required to take English Unit 1 and Unit 2.
