How to best get Xmas parcels to SA amid heavy postal strikes

by Sertan SanderSonWhile Somalia is busy celebrating the arrival of postal service in the country South Africans are complaining about the lack of service delivery when it comes to the SA postal services – and rightfully so.

Whether your letter is returned to sender, cards get lost in the mail or packages arrive half-opened (or half-stolen), the issues with the post office seem to amass with no end in sight. That is whenever our dutiful government employees aren’t striking again, as they have been for the past 2 months, resulting in great damage to parcels still waiting to be distributed out of Johannesburg. The SA postal services have reported a gradual improvement of affairs but the ongoing pay dispute is nevertheless likely to stretch into November, with the growing backlog on account of the illegal strike destined to last into 2015.

let’s face it: expats have long given up on the efficiency of the post office. Some don’t even send home Christmas cards anymore following the experience of

having care package after care package from SA ending up “lost in the post”. There is little advice available from local post offices in the UK and elsewhere, which are extremely busy at this time of the year dealing with items being sent to all four corners of the planet.

So what alternatives are there short of flying to SA and handing out gifts and goodies yourself? We would all gladly do that but not everyone is endowed with the finances and free time to make the annual pilgrimage back home happen.

As often is the case, you might have to look (and pay for) the private sector to take care of your business, which usually comes with far fewer problems and caveats but requires a premium price-tag.

PostNet operates a tight ne2rk across South Africa and works with Globalmail in the UK to get your letters, cards and packages home to Mzansi safely. They offer various services and delivery methods, with speeds reaching from a couple of days to a few weeks according to your desired method and budget. You can have

your content insured at extra cost, which guarantees reimbursement if any goods get lost or damaged (to the amount of the agreed insurance policy). This is also a rather advisable way for your relatives from South Africa to send you any items you may require, however, beware of certain items being subject to taxation if they are sent from SA to the UK. With this in mind, the numbers may simply not add up for it to be worth your while (and pocket) to receive some items from SA.

Dhl is another safe bet. They are one of the world leaders in private postal companies and stand out for their track record on accountability. You can track every last move of your parcel online and speak to customer service representatives 24/7. The vast majority of deliveries to South Africa on Dhl is routed via Angola, guaranteeing the arrival of your delivery in Southern Africa usually overnight. From there, the good people at Dhl operate a ne2rk unlike any other postal enterprise, where automated barcode readers continue to trace all movements until the friendly

delivery man (or woman) shows up at your doorstep with your package.

Finally, you can also try to order gifts online and have them sent to your friends and family directly. Many online stores work with private delivery services (such as PostNet and Dhl) or have their own delivery vans. They also have their own bulk agreements with these external delivery companies, which means that the cost of your delivery won’t be extortionate.

But even so, with all these options there are still no absolute guarantees, and while these methods may come with assurances and insurances galore, you cannot bank on a package actually arriving at the doorstep. We all agree that we rather prefer to actually have our parcels get to their respective final destinations in time for Christmas than having to go through the rigmarole of claiming money back on the insurance policy and missing out on instagramed family images of little faces filled with joy at the sight of their gifts.

The exact motivation behind his cancellation remains unclear, but the Office of the Presidency has rejected claims that the evasive leader had decided to pull out merely on account of not being offered an audience with UK Prime Minister David Cameron and being consoled with Deputy PM Nick Clegg instead. A press statement referred to the accusations as “incorrect and mischievous” but the burden of proof now lies with the president.

Despite the UK’s historic ties with South Africa and the increasing trade engagement

between the two nations (the UK is South Africa’s eighth largest export destination), political relations remain luke-warm while events such innovaBriCS continue to promote growth.

“The london visit by Ministers is designed to send the message that South Africa is open for business. We prefer to focus on that message which will take the country forward,” the message by the Presidency read.

“The purpose of the visit to london was to open the innovaBriCS conference and to promote South Africa as an investment destination. The conference is part-sponsored by the South African government through BrandSA. Therefore, it was not a South Africa-UK bilateral visit which necessitates an engagement at a government level. When heads of State and government undertake a visit of

this nature it is not a necessity to see the host head of state or government. A courtesy call takes place when both are available.”

Constitutional Development, as well as a small delegation of further senior government members comprised of rob Davies, Minister of Trade and industry, Nhlanhla Nene, Minister of Finance, and Faith Muthambi, Minister of Communications.

Winnie gets up to old tricks as she lays claim on Mandela’s Qunu residenceby Sertan SanderSon lATe president Nelson Mandela had made his intentions in regards to his legacy and will abundantly clear: his second wife Winnie Madikizela-Mandela was to get nothing out of him anymore. All the while he had also made sure that his children and outliving wife, Graca Machel, were to benefit equitably while the ANC also got a generous donation. it all seemed like a clean-cut affair. Until there was Winnie…

Winnie Mandela was present when the details of the will were read out and following this personal defeat hasn’t commented much since on how she might feel about the fact that in Mandela’s death she finally got the short end of the stick after milking his estate since their divorce. Until now, it seems.

in an embarrassing move, Winnie Mandela submitted a court application to have her divorce from Mandela in 1996 declared null and void, which – if granted – would allow her to lay claim to his Qunu residence in the eastern Cape. it is more than unlikely that any court would even entertain the notion, but the fact that she would still publicly claim herself as “Misses Mandela” says everything

about the confrontational character of the woman, who has admitted herself that the years of abuse under apartheid had broken her so much that pain had become “a way of life” for her.

“i no longer have the emotion of fear. [...] there is no longer anything i can fear.”

And it must this brazen fearlessness that drove her right into this latest scandal. While political commentators have had a field day with the news of her claim to Qunu, calling the former First lady anything from an “immoral person” to declaring her “money-grabbing”, it would hardly make for a fall from grace for a public person that many consider in the basement of poor taste already. even some within her very own ranks have taken to social media circles to criticise the megalomaniac attempt to lay her hands on Madiba’s legacy. Still, Winnie Mandela continues to enjoy the blind support of those who are just that: wilfully blind. having been convicted of 43 counts of fraud and 25 counts of theft while she remained at the helm of the powerful ANC Women’s league, many believe that “Mama Madiba” just slipped up and leave it at that, allowing her influence and ego to grow beyond

all standards of decency.Styling herself as “mother of

the nation” Winnie Madikizela-Mandela has been causing controversy since long before her ascent into the public eye. For those whose memory is too short or age too young to remember, let’s not forgot that the downfall of the erstwhile struggle heroine dates back to the height of apartheid, when her “all necessary means” attitude towards achieving her ends culminated in the brutal killing of Stompie Moeketsi Seipei at her hands, a child activist questionably accused of being a police snitch. her explicit execution order of the 14-year-old would be interpreted a war crime in many other territories, but in South Africa’s blood-stained past it appears to be difficult to quantify one transgression against the next, especially when the latest instalments of Winnie’s escapades looks like nothing against this backdrop of kidnapping and murder.

Of course, if we travel back further in time we will recall that this is also the same woman, whose acts of incitement to violence eclipsed those of some of the darkest figures in the history of apartheid, turning the phrase “necklacing” into a term adopted

by the Oxford Dictionary and giving torture a whole new facelift, long before she had made a habit of her own cosmetic adjustments in more recent years.

All of these crimes have meticulously been documented in the transcripts of the Truth and reconciliation Commission hearings. But while some of the henchmen of apartheid like eugene de Kock have received lifelong prison sentences for their unspeakable crimes (and justly so), Winnie Mandela enjoyed saint-like absolution, without any attention paid to the fact that both these figures were the living symptoms of the same disease at the time. While her husband was reaching out to bring South Africans of all colours together after long having changed his tone and rhetoric and having redeemed himself in the eyes of the entire globe, Winnie remained largely defiant, stoical and almost as ignorant as she seems to be with the latest episode of “Winnie-gate”, with the small exception that in the 1990s, the long arm of the law at least attempted to force her to face her demons whilst now her demons seem to be dancing all over Madiba’s grave.

how she still remains as a symbol of victory in many eyes

is as much part of South Africa’s tragedy as it is part of her own: in a culture, where violence is perpetrated as the benchmark of power while the power of the state is painfully limited when it comes to protecting its own citizens (but appears to fiddling in the deepest corners of everyone’s private lives to protect the sins of its own leaders), Winnie Mandela’s refrain sounds like a dying nation’s swansong on repeat, with the record skipping at the same note and slowly dulling South Africa’s collective minds to her dissonant and shrill persona.

Many would say that there’s no denying that corruption runs deep through every fibre of the South African psyche, from the moral kind to the despotic. Some claim that things are slowly getting better, others defend this absurd level of corruption by painting it as part of South Africa’s lively and colourful soul.

Whatever the case, there is corruption and then there is Winnie Mandela. When it comes to a track record like that laid by Winnie Madela, it is best to call a spade a spade before it starts digging Madiba’s body out for nothing but purely egotistical reasons.

Aldridge’s photograph ‘living rock Art’ shows 2 blesbok antelope running over the grassy plains of South Africa’s Kariega Game reserve. it was selected as the winner of the competition’s Nature’s Studio category before being awarded the overall title by the panel of expert judges. Aldridge collected his prize in lunen, Germany at a ceremony marking the competition’s 14th year.

Despite his success, as he explains, it’s a photo that he very nearly missed.

“i stepped off the side of the vehicle to get a ground-level angle of the animals stampeding past and i heard a loud crack. My ankle had turned in a hole and i landed in a heap in the dust. The pain was unbelievable. Fortunately, i had

somehow planted my tripod and camera safely as i fell and i was able to sit up just in time to capture a few frames as the blesbok careered past before then dealing with my injuries.”

Known for his documentary photography of conservation issues, Aldridge was actually in South Africa working on a story about the rhino poaching crisis for British-based magazine Wild Travel when he took his winning photo.

“We had been following one particular female rhino that had survived a brutal attack by poachers,” he says. “i think i had photographed her from every possible angle so we decided to take a break. That’s when we found the herd of blesbok.”

With the light on the open plains fading fast, Aldridge decided to shoot in a more artistic style than his usual candid documentary approach.

“The result was no accident. i was working hard to capture their

Is éVoid a band of its time? Sell out concerts say no| Ahead of their gig at The Half Moon in Putney éVoid spoke to us about being ‘ou toppie icons’

by nilS van der lindenThe last time éVoid did a full South African tour, PW Botha was president. The brothers erik and lucien Windrich were 20-somethings with a thing for beads and face paint. And their politically charged, African-flavoured ethnotronic songs were considered subversive enough to warrant police attention — and popular enough for jumping fans to cave in the floor of Stellenbosch Town hall.

That was 30 years ago — an eternity in the music scene. So the siblings, based in london since 1985, were understandably a little worried about doing it all over again to celebrate the anniversary of their self-titled debut album. No need: all 10 of their August homecoming shows were sell-out successes.

“it kind of blew us away because we hadn’t expected that sort of a response.” explains erik, who found his transformation back into a rockstar to be equally surprising.

“it was weird, surreal, very strange,” laughs the man who’s now creative and performance manager at Kingsbury high School. “it’s a completely different mindset in a way but we slotted in kind of naturally — there was nothing forced. What actually felt best of all was we didn’t have to apologise for anything we were doing, we were there on our own terms.

“They were there to hear the music and see us perform, and in the old days we may have felt the pressure to do a cover version or something else. But this was about an audience appreciating what we do and what our legacy meant to them. So that felt really affirmative.”

So did the stories fans (or “fadgets”) shared after shows — including an apologetic former cop who, three decades ago, had been tasked with keeping an eye on the band and routinely flattening the tyres of their car. The brothers’ own story is just as unexpected. Following their move to the UK to avoid erik’s conscription, they recorded a second album (here Comes The rot) but failed to find a solid international footing at a time when South African exports, regardless of their political leanings, were regarded with suspicion. real life - families, studying, jobs - took over.

“in a sense, [the band] was of its

time and we feel we made the most of it. if luck had been different and timing had been different, it may have been a different outcome. But that’s life,” he says without a hint of regret — perhaps because, unlike fame, their love of music has never waned.

Erik, a film school graduate who also soundtracks features and TV documentaries, and lucien, who keeps up his guitar chops by playing in a blues band, just can’t stop writing songs, like those that appeared on 2008’s socially conscious, forward-looking Graffiti lounge album.

“Writing music is something we’ve always loved to do, making money out of it was something we needed to do, if you like,” he says, looking back on the ‘80s. “So essentially it’s not something that drives us now, but it’s very difficult to make a living out of it. And, certainly, since relocating it’s been much more difficult, where you have to restart and rebuild a following. So, it’s been difficult to tie those things together, but essentially it’s about music and that’s what we enjoy.

“it was proved when we were back in South Africa performing again — that natural association and natural feel for it, people appreciated it, we could see that.”

But erik is wary of throwing around the word “comeback”.

“People told us: ‘You were formative, you have the same relevance, the same appeal’, and in South Africa we felt that if we were on the festival tour, playing larger stadiums, it could work, people would respond on that level, and that’s a compliment.

“Whether we could rebuild — i wouldn’t say never, but i guess it’s down to energy,” he chuckles.

New music is even a possibility — if there’s a demand.

“it’s a hard sell, selling music these days,” erik admits. “i did put together a commemorative compilation CD for the tour which sold well, so there’s definitely the interest. But i think that was because we were there, performing. it’s a lot harder when you’re not there and you’re trying to sell a CD, and you can’t convince radio to play it because people just want to hear the old stuff.”

That old stuff will be reaching a whole new audience in July 2015 when éVoid take the stage at a festival in Portsmouth — a prospect that clearly excites erik.

“it might be a ‘ou toppie’ twilight,” he laughs.

The brothers John, Jesse, Dylan and Daniel grew up in both london and South Africa and were taught music by their father, the legendary John Kongos. After having moved to Arizona, they found themselves rising to fame back home in South Africa. They have recently found success internationally, touring non-stop since April, supporting One republic in europe and the Kings of leon in America. The four brothers stated that both their parents wanted them

to learn music, just like any other subject at school. “We started jamming together playing different instruments as teenagers and we realised it was a good way to avoid a real job” joked Jesse. When asked how they felt about being described as the next Kings of leon, Dylan replied: “We’ll take it. We saw their show like 15 times when we were on tour with them, it was an incredible show and they’ve really built something pretty special. if we can get to that level; playing to 80 000 people in Dublin, that’s really okay with us.”

Johnny said that the band was influenced by a variety of sounds, from West African and South African music, to Jackson Browne. A couple of songs on the album have been influenced by Kwaito music, but they are definitely not a kwaito band, says Dylan, laughing

at Wikipedia’s description of the band’s musical style. These influences, whilst broad, came together beautifully on their live set. it’s very rare to see a band being able to incorporate so many styles so well. Audience members of many different ages were enraptured by the performance, where every song was played with energy, charisma and passion.

The band describes the Beatles as one of their inspirations, which was evident with performances of “Get Back” and “Come Together” in the lineup. The performance of “Come Together” was a mash up of the original lyrics joined by the rapping of Moe’z Art, to the hook of Dr Dre’s “What’s the Difference”. it was an ambitious, experimental rendition that surprisingly worked very well. Being somewhat of a family affair, the band thanked their

mother and father in the audience. Despite the extremely hot venue, the crowd begged for an encore and the band humbly obliged.

When asked what they miss most about home they said:

“There’s very little that we don’t miss about South Africa. We try to go back ever year. We miss our

friends probably most of all and also just the weather, the climate, the people…”

We miss you. You guys kicked this whole thing off for us. Thanks a lot for that. We’re coming back, it’s just a matter of finding the time. We haven’t forgotten!”

however, the service currencies we monitor for purposes of this report resulted in a mixed performance with eM currencies displaying a mostly weaker occurrence.

The rand also reinforced against the euro, Pound and the Yen – with the largest move seen against the Yen at a respectable rate of 1.3 percent. Among the eM currencies we monitor for the purposes of this report, only the TrY and ZAr appreciated. The iNr was unchanged; all of the others depreciated. The rand was the second-best performer in both categories.

Precious metals were on the back foot yesterday, with gold and platinum falling 0.8 percent and 0.5 percent respectively.

Meanwhile, Brent and copper prices rose by 2.5 percent and 0.2 percent respectively.

Non-residents were net sellers of local equities (-ZAr 458 million) but were moderate net buyers of local bonds (ZAr 338 million) on the day.

After moving to the UK, egan bought a bike with his savings, worked on it and travelled around the circuits in a van whilst racing in the Triumph challenge series. egan went from being a champion to a guy in a van with his dad.

“i came to the UK and i was just another Joe Soap, there are loads of good riders here.” This wasn’t his only challenge. “i didn’t know how to cook, clean or anything and so i had to grow up very quickly,” he laughs.

by Myak hoMberGer JAMeS Egan bought his first bike, a 125, and with his dad worked on it in their garage whilst travelling to races in a van, just the 2 of them. Very quickly he started winning races and soon he was made SA Champion.At 24, egan has accomplished more than many could dream of. Yet he’s moved to the UK at 21 to start again from scratch, leaving a successful motorcycling career behind.

Motorbike racing in the UK is the breeding ground for the best riders in the world, and so country champions from all over come to race with the best. But few

Africa spirit and skill, egan won the series in his first year and was literally back in the game.

Talent always rises to the top, and he was noticed by Spur MWr Kawasaki. They offered him a deal to ride for them the next season. Suddenly he was riding 1,000cc bikes, not 600cc, and now racing in the series below British Superbikes. Not bad for one year in the UK.

The amazing thing about this series is that only 2 seconds separate the first and the last place, so getting that extra 0.1 out of a bike can have a huge effect on your standing. Add to this the fact that there are more riders than

there are places on the grid and you are racing just to be in the game.

So why turn your back on South Africa and a guaranteed career? egan says he wants to be the best in the world, and so to be the best you need to ride in the best competitions with the best riders; he doesn’t want to settle. As he said “these riders ride in all weathers, all conditions on tracks that were built in the 1950’s. You need to be an amazing rider to win here. This is the place to be”.

egan talks a lot about the support team and how integral they are to the success, for him off track organisation is critical, and compared to South Africa it’s in

a different league. With the likes of Clayton Francois of SA racers abroad and Spur as sponsors, they have enabled him to live his dream.

| Looking for a fun way to get active? Why not play a game of touch at the Late Autumn Touch League

by in2touchiF you and your friends are looking for athletic activities to participate in during the Autumn season then why not try out the various games of Touch. There are indoor and outdoor leagues available and you can join as an individual or as a team. it’s also a fantastic socialising event and a great opportunity to meet new people.

The late Autumn Touch league is played at Clapham Common near the Clapham South Tube Station and is one of the most popular venues in london. The league uses a standard format of touch with 40 minute games where teams will play each team in their division and then go into Semi Finals and Finals over a six week period. There will be grading games in the first week of playoffs, depending on numbers to determine which divisions the teams will be placed in for the season.

We do offer places in a team of individuals or even in existing teams that need numbers if you don’t have a full team to register yourself. if you don’t have a team you need to send Tracy an email at [email protected] and she can place you into a team/division of your choice.

We’re encouraging everyone to get out there and get involved in this friendly team sport where you can test your skills on the court and thereafter hang out with your fellow sportsman, friends and family.

Games start at 12pm – 40 minute games

if you don’t want to spend your Sunday’s playing touch then we do have new Active Touch leagues coming up during the week. Come and see what the fuss is about. Active Touch is played with four players on the court, with at least two females on the court at any one time and you can have up to 10 players in your team.

An awesome game incorporating elements of touch, netball, ultimate Frisbee and basketball, once you have played one game, we know you will be hooked. The first weeks’ game will be a get to know it session for beginners and intermediates alike, where you will learn more about the game and how to play it, with league games starting from the second week.

Active Touch leagues (New indoor Sport that you will love)

Canary Wharf on Mondays & Wandsworth on Tuesdays & Thursdays

Mondays start on the 3 November, Tuesday starts on the 28 October & Thursday starts on the 30 October.

Mondays (19:00 on wards), Tuesdays & Thursdays (18:30 – 19:30) Games are 30 minutes long.

by pedro MapeloSeNZO Meyiwa was shot and killed by an armed man who stormed into girlfriend Kelly Khumalo’s house and demanded cell phones, money and other valuables, as Gauteng Safety MeC Sizakele Nkosi-Malubane told reporters at the scene. Meyiwa tried to protect Khumalo because

one of the men had a gun pointed towards her. he was declared dead on arrival at Johannesburg hospital.

SA Police commissioner riah Phiyega announced in the morning that they have put a special task team to investigate the incident.

“We can assure all South Africans that we will do all we can to bring Senzo Meyiwa`s killers to

book”, said South African Police Service in a statement

The 27-year-old Umlazi born last played for Orlando Pirates on Saturday night in a Telkom Knockout game against Ajax Cape Town at Orlando Stadium where they produced a stupendous 4-1 win.

The tragedy happened precisely when he was on top of his career.
