The Universe

The universe was created 15 billion years ago in the big bang .Since then matter has come together to form stars ,galaxies ,planets and life.

CopernuicusThe work of Polish

astronomer Nicolus Copernicus (1473-1543) marks a change in the understanding of the universe .He proposed that the sun, not the Earth , was at the centre of the universe.

Big BangAn INCRIDBLE EXPLOSION called the big bang is

believed to have created the universe. Observation of galaxies and heat radiation from space have conformed this theory. Astronomers are now working to explain exactly what happened from the point of the big bang explosion which created everything today’s Universe- matter, energy, space and time.

EarthWe LIVE IN GIANT BALL OF ROCK spinning around

the sun which is called earth. The earth is one of nine planets in the solar system and of the four made of rock. The Earth is unique because it is the only planet in the solar system – that can support life . The distance of the earth from sun makes it neither very hot like Venus , nor very cold like Neptune.

The Nine Known Planets

A day on :Mercury = 3 Earth monthsVenus = 117 Earth daysMars = 41 minutes longer than

an Earth dayJupiter = 10 Earth hoursSaturn = 10 ½ Earth hoursUranus = 13 ½ Earth hoursNeptune = 18 Earth hoursPluto = 7 Earth days

If you weigh 85 lbs. On Earth, you weigh:

32 lbs on Mercury77 lbs on Venus32 lbs on Mars244 lbs on Jupiter112 lbs on Saturn79 lbs on Uranus105 lbs on Neptune2.5 lbs on Pluto

The Orbital Speed of the PlanetsMercury = 30 miles per secondVenus = 22 miles per secondEarth = 19 miles per secondMars = 15 miles per secondJupiter = 8 miles per secondSaturn = 6 miles per secondUranus = 4.2 miles per secondNeptune = 3.3 miles per secondPluto = 2.9 miles per secondTherefore, the further away from the Sun, the slower

the orbital speed.

The Earth has one Moon. How many moons do the other planets have?

Mercury - 0Venus - 0Mars - 2Jupiter - 17Saturn - 22Uranus - 15Neptune - 2Pluto - 1The Moon

It takes 365 days for Earth to revolve around the Sun. How long does it take the other planets?

Mercury - 88 Earth daysVenus - 225 Earth daysMars - about 2 Earth yearsJupiter - 11.8 Earth yearsSaturn - 30 Earth yearsUranus - 84 Earth yearsNeptune - 165 Earth yearsPluto - 248 Earth years
