TIMELINE OF U.S. SOLAR HISTORY
” –
1883
• American scientist Charles Fritt was the first inventor to design basic solar cells using selenium wafers.
1892 - 1905
• In 1892, Aubrey Eneas from Boston began experimenting with solar power usage in motor technology.
• In 1900, Eneas founded the very first solar power company in the United States - The Solar Motor Co.; he continued his pioneering work till 1905.
• In 1905, Albert Eintein submitted his paper on the Photoelectric effect which detailed how solar light can be used to release electrons on a metal surface. He was later awarded a Nobel Prize for his groundbreaking work.
1953 - 1954
• In 1953, three scientists from the Bell Labs in New Jersey invented the first silicon solar cell to convert solar power into usable electricity.
• Credited with the creation of the first photovoltaic cell in the world, David Chapin, Gerald Pearson and Calvin Fuller of Bell Labs were teh illustrious men who devised a way to convert sunlight into usable electrical power. They continued their work and found ways to boost the efficiency of coversion at a later date.
