Why BenchTop?Today’s marketplace challenges calibration laboratories like nev-

er before-economics, personnel, marketing, etc.; at times the list offormidable tasks appears to be endless. Out of this economic neces-sity, business has become a culture of doing more with less. And ontop of that a calibration laboratory must meet industry standardquality requirements, provide a high level of customer service andstill make a profit. In many companies, Quality, Service and Profit(QSP) seem to be in opposition. yet in order to be competitive andsuccessful, your lab must continually produce higher quality, betterservice and yes, still be profitable.

A practical solution is need to meet this formidable challenge. Asolution that could be easily implemented and maintained andworks to make QSP a reality. It is one thing to publish a softwareapplication that works under ideal conditions. It is quite anotherthing to create a software application that actually helps makethose ideal conditions of QSP a reality! What is BenchTop?

BenchTop is a calibration lab management software system. Itwas specifically designed as a practical solution to meet the chal-lenges and demands of QSP. BenchTop is the most comprehensiveclient/server solution available today. It was purposely created uti-lizing an open architecture and industry standard tools and can beexecuted on most industry standard SQL database systems.

BenchTop captures the complete business process of a calibra-tion lab. It streamlines the laboratory into six basic processes: re-ceiving, lab, quality assurance, management, shipping and billing, all completely traceable and trackable. Each task of the softwaresuite has been optimized to ensure total quality yet be easy to use.

BenchTop does not do the work...it expedites it, recording everyactivity on every job so that your laboratory runs like clockwork.BenchTop monitors jobs every step of the way, recording and log-ging to meet the laboratory requirements necessary for certifica-tion. BenchTop was created by calibration laboratory professionalswho understand the ins and outs of how an actual lab operates.

TRX-II Documenting Process Calibrator

Multifunction portable calibratorThe TRX II has been designed for ease of use while

meeting a wide range of application needs includingcalibration, maintenance and commissioning. Thedual parameter display shows the measured andsourced values in large clear digits with all applicableinformation such as the units of measurement andrange. With safety in mind, construction of the shoul-der strap allows hands free operation while maintain-ing display visibility.Temperature sensor simulationand loop checking

The auto step and ramp modes enable a singletechnician to test and commission control loops. Thecalibrator is left to generate a pre-programmed out-put, while the technician checks the signal furtherdown the loop.

End to end control loop performance can bechecked with one instrument by simulating a temper-ature signal at the start of the loop.

When troubleshooting apply a three step approach.Temperature transmitter simulationand calibration

Direct connection of thermocouple compensation

wires eliminates the need for special connectors andreduces additional cold junction errors. This is themost reliable and accurate method of monitoring coldjunction temperatures in a portable field calibrator.

In calibration mode the display shows all the re-quired information. Both mV and mA values are dis-played in °F for easy comparison, along with the cal-culated error expressed as % of span or reading.

The TRX II will simulate the temperature signal tothe transmitter to be calibrated and will simultane-ously measure and display the output. A 24 volt pow-er supply is provided for stand alone operation.

Calibration for ISO 9000Dedicated keys for documenting field cali-

brations eliminate human errors and areavailable as standard. The ’AS FND’ (asfound) and ‘AS LEFT’ keys start the respec-

tive procedures for storing calibration datawhich can be recalled using the ‘VIEW’ key.

Optional PCMCIA cards represent the most effi-cient data transfer media. Docking of the calibratorwith the PC is unnecessary as a card containing cali-bration data can be exchanged for another containingnew procedures/work orders, enabling techniciansand calibrators to spend more time in the field.

Data is transferred to the PC from the PCMCIAcard or the RS 232 interface for analysis, certificateprinting and archiving. Exporting facilities are pro-vided for word processor and spreadsheet applicationsor in-house maintenance systems.Remote pressure sensors

Remote pressure sensors offer a cost effectivemeans of expanding the capabilities of the TRX II, forexample:•Calibration of pressuretransmitters• Testing pressure switches• For differential pressure applications• For flow measurement calibrations

The capability of the TRX II can be extended byadding up to 8 external pressure sensors (connectedone at a time). With ranges from 1 to 10,000 psi andall welded stainless steel and Hastelloy construction, sensors can be chosen to suit many applications.Remote pressure sensors require a mating cable ap-proximately 4.5 feet in length. One end connection in-terfaces with the remote pressure sensor electrical in-put and one end mates with the TRX II remote pres-sure sensor electrical input (please refer to OptionB2). The latest technology and production techniqueshave been developed so that these sensors which aredigitally corrected for non-linearity and temperatureeffects.

MFT 4000The microprocessor-based, handheld MFT4000

multifunctional tester allows users to measurepressure, differential pressure and temperature;to measure voltage or current; and to calibratefield devices. It also offers HART digital communi-cations capability. This provides the user with theability to poll, configure and maintain HART com-patible field devices with just one unit from thepalm of their hand.

Using the MFT 4000's NIST traceable measure-ments and HART mode to check a field device pro-vides the technician with one display for appliedprocess value, measured value, analog output andthe trim menu needed to return the field device tooptimum performance.

The MFT 4000 consists of a portable (9.5" x 4")base unit that encloses three bays for sensor mod-ules. Two of the bays will accommodate a varietyof available pressure modules. The third is an ac-cessory bay for which customers can choose from anumber of other measurement modules such astemperature of frequency.

The MFT 4000's pressure modules ar NISTtraceable to ± 0.025% of full scale and are fullytemperature compensated for best accuracy acrossa broad temperature range. Measurement of bothcurrent (ma) and dc voltage (volts) are integral tothe base unit with ± 0.025% of full scale accuracy.

The user can easily zero any installed sensormodule or display minimum/maximum measure-ments. Displayed measurements can be damp-ened to remove jitter. A security code allows lock-out of changes to all calibrator settings or can belimited to specific features.

Other standard features include sensor modulerecertification capability, self-testing and diagnos-tics and user-selectable automatic turnoff. MFT4000 will offer options for popular calibration doc-umentation packages, loop power andcurrent/voltage sourcing, USB connection andhazardous environment testing.

Below: Multi-FunctionCalibrator with optionalLinkpak-W software and pressure calibrator

Recording Calibrations in Field orWorkshop with Linkpak-WSupporting software for Windows has been developed totransfer a selection of calibration routines from your PC toa solid state disk (SSD). With the disk inserted in theMCX-II-calibrator you can run field calibrations simply byselecting a tag number. Calibrator readings are recordeddirectly in Data Base Formatted (DBF) files. For workshopapplications a direct high speed communication withoutthe SSD-media is available. The Linkpak-W option is rec-ommended to comply to ISO 9000 quality programs.

Module for Pressure CalibrationsModules to calibrate pressure instruments are availablewith one or two sensors ranging from Vac to 5000 PSI(Gage and absolute are available). Modules with two sen-sors may be selected to read differential pressure. Typicalaccuracies are 0.05% of reading. Micro-processor tech-niques have been used to compensate for linearity errorsand ambient temperature effects. To suit both portable andtable use, the pressure module can be plugged-in eitheron the front or on the back of the MCX-II. Pressure mod-ules can be shared between multiple MCX-II units.Calibration is stored in each module.

Hart's line of portable dry-wells is incredible. They're the smallest, lightest, and most portable dry-wells in theworld. The Model 9100 weighs only 2 pounds 3 ounces(1kilogram).Model 9100 Dry-Well

Since we introduced the world's first truly handheld dry-well, many have tried to duplicate it—in vain. Despite itssmall size (2 1/4 inches high and 5 inches wide) and light weight, 9100 outperforms any dry-well in its class in theworld.

It's simple and convenient too. Anyone can learn to use it in 15 minutes. It has a range to 375°C (707°F) and isperfect for checking RTDs, thermocouples, and small bimetal thermometers in the field.

Plug it in, switch it on, set the temperature with the front-panel buttons, and insert your probe into the properlysized well. compare the reading of your device to the display temperature or to an external reference, and the differ-ence is th error in your device. The 9100 HDRC has a display resolution of 0.1 degrees, an accuracy of ±0.5°C a stabil-ity of ±0.1°C, and a stabilization time of five minutes. Model 9102 Dry-Well

For work in the temperature of -10°C to 122°C, Harts Model 9102 dry-well is another first i n the industry. This dry-well is only 3.25 inches high and 6 inches wide, achieves temperatures as low as -10°C, includes a NIST

traceable calibration, and is accurate to ±0.5°C. The model 9102 is excellent for dial gauges, digital thermometers, bulb switches, , and other sensors that need calibration below ambient. It's perfect for ISO 9000 quality programsbecause its calibration is NIST traceable.

It has two wells so you can use one for a refence thermometer to increase the accuracy. Both wells are 1/2 inch indiameter, each has inserts available for almost any sensor size. The 9102 also has a battery pack option that givesyou approximately four hours of field use when AC power is unavailable.

If you work with high-temperature thermocou-ples and you'd rather test them than throw themout, but you haven't fount a calibration instru-ment that checking them economical, now there'sa solution.

The Model 9150 delivers all the benefits tomake verifying your thermocouples productiveand effective.

The 9150's temperature display and built-intype S thermocouple are system calibrated in ourlab for display accuracy. of ±4°C (7.2°F) over theentire range 1200°C (2192°F). Each 9150 includesa NIST–traceable certificate with data at fourpoints between 150°C and 1200°C.

For comparison work, stability is better than±0.5°C (0.9°F) at 1200°C and even better at lowertemperatures. Hole-to-hole gradients are also lessthan ±0.5°C at maximum temperature. Therefore, with a good reference thermometer and carefulcomparison techniques, your calibration uncer-tainties can be less than 1°C.

A wide variety of inserts is available to maxi-mize productivity and enable comparison work.Thermocouples from 1/16" to 1/2" (1.6 to 12.7 mm)in diameter can be used, depending on which ofour standard inserts you choose. Each insert ac-cepts as many as six probes. Custom inserts arealso available.

Each furnace comes with an RS-232 interface -it software which lets you control the unit from aWindows® environment. Foe maximum productiv-ity, the 9150 can be combined with a Hart refer-ence thermometer and our calibrate–it software tofull automate thermocouple testing. Calibrate–itreads all types of temperature sensors, controlsheat sources such as 9150, and creates calibrationreports that comply with ANSI/NCSL Z40-1.

For use in the field, the 9150 includes impor-tant features for on-site calibrations. At only 28pounds (13kg), it goes anywhere you need it to.This furnace heats to maximum temperatures injust over half-hour.

The Gemini R is a blackbody source withwhich radiation pyrometers, commonly referred toas IR sensors, can be calibrated. With a tempera-ture range of 50ºC to 550ºC, the temperature ofthe cavity can be set with 0.1ºC resolution. Thetemperature of the furnace is set and indicated ona PID controller. An independent indicator is alsoprovided for higher accuracy with a standardprobe, which indicates the actual radiance tem-perature. Temperature variation over a 5-minuteperiod, as viewed on the temperature controller, is±0.2ºC and a radiation thermometer directed intothe cavity detects similar variations.

The Gemini R’s cavity’s size is 2.5” Ø x 6.3” deep(65mm x 160mm). Maximum temperature differ-ences are ±1ºC in the range of 100ºC to 500ºC. TheGemini R is capable of accepting blackbody fixedpoints to achieve the highest level of a radiationmeasurement possible. Typical fixed-point uncer-tainties are ±0.25ºC. Gallium, indium, tin and zinccells are available.

Emissivity is greater than 0.995, and traceabili-ty may be established with a NIST certificate forthe built-in indicator and/or supplied probe. TheGemini R can be supplied with RS232 or RS422communications.

A compact furnace for calibrating radiation py-rometers, the Pegasus R sets the temperature ofthe furnace on a controller while an independentindicator, whose sensor is built into the furnace’scavity, indicates the actual radiance temperature. The cavity’s diameter is 0.8” (20mm). The depth is2.6” (65mm). The emissivity is 0.995. The cavity isremovable and a fixed-point cell may be put in itsplace.

A Blackbody Target Radiation Source is housedwithin the Pegasus R for the calibration of radia-tion thermometers in the wavelength range of 9 to14 micrometers. Incorporating suitable insulationwithin its design, this radiation source’s apertureis 0.4” (10mm) in diameter. A scan across the aper-ture at 444ºC demonstrates the source is uniformto better than 0.3ºC. Traceability may be estab-lished with a NIST certificate for the built-in indi-cator and supplied probe.

The Pegasus R’s temperature range is 150ºC to1200ºC and it has a stability of 0.1ºC. Time to tem-perature is 20 minutes. It weighs only 15 lb. and iseasily carried in the field for on-site use. ThePegasus R can be supplied with either RS232 orRS422 communications.

Whether your using in-line or handheld infrared pyrometers, you need good calibration standard to verify their accuracy. Ournew portable IR calibrators provide stable blackbody targets forcalibrating noncontact IR thermometers from –30°C to 500°C.

These new units feature a large, temperature controlled black-body target with a diameter of 2.25" (57mm), which offers largefield of view area for optical variations in infrared thermometers. The emissivity of the isothermal target is set at 0.95, and the tar-get temperature can be controlled in set-point increments of 0.1°from –30°C to 500°C.

For even higher precision, a well is located directly behind theblackbody surface for contact calibration of the blackbody. Usingan optional calibrated PRT and readout device, target accuracy of±0.075°C can be achieved.

These units are easy to use as "point and shoot." Simply set thedesired blackbody temperature from the convenient front panelcontrol buttons, wait a few minutes for equilibrium, and point thegun at the target. The radiated energy from the blackbody is mea-sured by your IR thermometer. Simply compare its reading to thedisplay on the blackbody and record the difference.9132 For IR calibrations above normal ambient, the 9132 pro-vides a stable blackbody target up to 500°C (932°F). With accura-cy to ±0.5°C and stability to ±0.1°C, this new portable IR unit cancertify most handheld pyrometers.

Short heating and cooling times mean you won't have to waitlong to get your work done. From room temperature to 500°C the9132 will be stable within 30 minutes. You won't find a more com-pact IR calibrator.9133 If you're calibrating IR guns are at cold temperatures, you'lllove our new 9133. With solid state cooling technology, this new IRcalibrator reaches –30°C (-22°F) in normal ambient conditions. With a new conveniently located dry gas fitting on the front bezel, the 9133 won't build up ice on the target. At the upper end of itsrange, the 9133 provides stable temperature to 150°C (302°F).

With heating and cooling times of about 15 minutes from ambi-ent to either extreme, the 9133 gets you totemperature quicklyand performs when itgets there.
