THE SOFT SKILLS OF DECISION-MAKING

• Welcome to Decision-making course!

• We'll be learning about the soft skills of decision-making today

The learning objectives of the course are as follows:

• Analyse various decision-making models

• Enhance creativity and logic in decision-making

• Learn about the tips and techniques for quick and improved results

The process of analysing possibilities, options, comparing them, and choosing a course of action is what decision-making is all about

Hence, for effective decision-making, a person must be able to forecast the outcome of each option and based on the forecast, determine the option that is best for a particular situation

The aspects of effective decision-making are:

• Perception

• Priority

• Acceptability

• Risk

• Resources

The six C’s of decision-making are

• Construct

• Compile

• Collect

• Compare

• Consider

• Commit

• Construct a clear picture of exactly what has to be decided

• Compile a list of requirements that must be met

• Collect data on alternatives that would meet the requirements

• Compare alternatives that meet the requirements

• Consider the ‘what might go wrong’ factor with each alternative

• Commit to a decision and follow-through with it

The inherent personal traps of decision-making are:

• Trying too hard to play it safe

• Allowing fears and biases skew your thinking and analysis

• Getting lost in the minutiae can be a hindrance

• Craving for unanimous approval

• Attempting to make unauthorised decisions

The inherent system traps of decision-making are:

• Willing to begin with too little, inaccurate or wrong information

• Overlook feasible alternatives or waste time considering unviable alternatives

• Not following the six C’s

• Failure to clearly define the results you expect to achieve

• Worst of all, failure to reach a decision

The Do’s of successful decision-making include

Do identify why the decision needs to be made. Making choices arises when a situation needs to be addressed. The Do’s of Decision-Making

•Do gather all the information necessary to make the decision. Missing important information may lead to an unsuccessful decision, or one made for the wrong reasons. Make sure you have all the details before making a choice

The Don’ts of successful decision-making include:

• Don’t feel pressured to make hasty decisions. Good decisions need to be made once all the necessary information has been gathered and critically analysed

• Don’t doubt your ability. Making a strong decision can be hard. It can have negative effects on those involved, making it hard to remain confident in your ability to make the best decision. However successful decisions lead to change and progress

Thank You!
