REPLACING EXFOLIATING POLYETHYLENE BEADS IN
RINSE-OFF COSMETIC PRODUCTS
DR. DAPHNE BENDERLY, PRESPERSE
Polyethylene beads are in use in many rinse-off cosmeticproducts, as exfoliating agents. The choice of PE gradedepends on the intended use – facial scrub vs. bodyscrub vs. foot scrub. Recently there is rising consumersentiment against the use of PE in cosmetic products, due to environmental concerns. There has been legisla-tion proposed in several states to ban the use of plastic
exfoliants, and a bill has passed in Illinois.
This talk will give some background on the use of polymers as exfoliants inpersonal care products, some current legislative challenges, and some al-ternative proposed materials. Several of these alternates are other polymericmaterials.
DR. DAPHNE BENDERLYDr. Benderly is a Senior Applications Scientist at Presperse. She has over20 years experience in industrial R&D, among others in the personal care, specialty chemicals, and plastics industries. Daphne has received her doc-torate in Materials Engineering from the Technion - Israel Institute of Tech-nology; MS in Macromolecular Sciences from Case Western ReserveUniversity and BS in Mechanical Engineering from Massachusetts Instituteof Technology. She is a member of SPE and SCC (Society of CosmeticChemists). She is on the Board of Directors for the SPE Applied RheologyDivision-in-Formation, and has been involved in the organizing committeeKen Mieure Award for Distinguished Service.

Editor’s Note
From the EditorLast month we bid farewell to our long-time section member and Emeritus Direc-tor, Al Whitney, who passed away at 100years of age. I hope you enjoy reading thetribute to him on the following pages. I’msure many more plastics industry mem-bers could add their thoughts and mem-
ories. Al was also our unofficial historian, and his son hasseveral boxes of SPE historical documents that Al had col-lected over the years.
If anyone would like to volunteer to review these documentsand put them in a digital archive, you would be doing agreat service to the society. Please contact S.T. [email protected] as soon as possible if you would liketo do this.

Many thanks to our January meeting speakers, Mark Lavachand Bob Smith, both from Arkema
Mark Lavach receives a Past President’s award from current President S.T. Lee for his work in the past term, especially for his ef-forts in involving young professionals into the board and leading our section forward.

Our Section mourns the loss of Al Whitney and also celebrates his 100 years, duringwhich he made many contributions to the plastics industry and to our section inparticular. He was instrumental in founding our section in 1964 and the vinyl Divisionin 1970. Al suggested starting a journal to contain vinyl research, and the Journalof vinyl Technology was founded in 1978; it became the Journal of vinyl & AdditiveTechnology in 1995, noted the new editor of JvAT, Jim Summers, in a presentationat last year’s vinylTech. Al was the editor of the Spec Sheet for many years, andworked to make it an award-winning publication, as shown in this picture from 1994,when he accepted an award for the Grand Prize Winner of SPE Section Newsletters.
Al spent many hours editing and publishing. He gave his time generously and gra-ciously helped me get started following his footsteps as editor in 2011, while hecontinued finding sponsors to support the newsletter. He was committed to thesuccess of the newsletter and SPE and has left that legacy to our section.
Tribute to Alva Whitney
THE FOLLOWING IS REPRINTED FROM NOvEMBER 2013: Congratulations to Al Whitney, who is awarded the 2013 Lifetime Achievement Award for his contributions to the VinylDivision and the Society of Plastics Engineers. Although Al was not able to be present at the VinylTec meeting, MarkLavach gave a speech, excerpted here, detailing some of Al’s work so that all present would be able to appreciate Al’scontributions to our industry.
Al (Alva) Whitney traces his family lineage back to Eli Whitney (the famous inventor of the cotton gin). Al’s grandfather was a labassistant to Thomas Alva Edison, and Al was named in Edison’s honor. Al graduated from the Newark College of Engineering(now NJIT) in 1936. He worked as a salesman, and the bulk of his career was spent with the Goodyear Corporation in vinyl andrelated products. During World War II, Al was instrumental in making sure the US government had a supply of the newly developedsynthetic polymer called “vinyl” for its experimental work. Al recognized the need for improved vinyl properties, which led to hisassociation with the young chemist Elliot Weinberg of M&T Chemicals (Arkema). This association initiated the development ofmodern mercaptide stabilizers and the landmark patent in 1953; these stabilizers are still used today.
Al believes in SPE and the SPE objective and mission. Our Section wouldn’t be where we are today without contributions ofmembers like Al Whitney. If not for Al, we might not have our Section at all. In 1962, the New york Section of the Society ofPlastics Engineers refused to give PvC proper time at its meetings, and so Al started a petition to form the Palisades Section, which was chartered and launched in 1964. Al served as President of the Section four times, and organized many of the com-mittees that would form the basis of the Palisades Section. For example, along with Mel Gerson, he formed the Educational En-dowment Committee and Fund, which plays a significant role in what our section is able to do today to support students.
Al was instrumental during the vCM crisis at the landmark vinyltec conference that had over 1000 attendees. He also workedon many other conferences hosted by the Palisades Section, which was known as the locus of PvC within SPE. For many years,Al, Elliot, and Dave Reilly were critical parts of the operational excellence of the Palisades Section and the development of SPE.In 2008, Al worked on the committee that resulted in the formation of the current Palisades-New Jersey Section, and he continuesto be active today, serving as an emeritus member of our BOD and Sponsorship Chair.
For 99 years, Al has defined excellence, and we salute his accomplishments today! Within the Palisades-New Jersey Section,we will be renaming our High School Scholarships in his honor. From humble beginnings, Al built a legacy of excellence. He lovesour Section and the SPE, and it means a lot to him that it continues to grow and prosper. If you are not already a member, consider joining today. Congratulations Al, and thank you!

When I joined what was then the Palisades Section of theSPE in 1980, Al Whitney was a fixture at every meetingand remained that way for over thirty years. His tripsfrom the West Coast of Florida to New Jersey for meetingswere as legendary almost as much as his inability totake a good picture was comical, but in spite of or be-cause of it all Al was an amazing one-of-a-kind person. He had us all believing that he was going to live foreverand perhaps he almost did.
He must have been an unbelievable sales person whosold with the perseverance of a bulldog because he wasunstoppable. So when he finally passed I was very sadto see that this legend really was mortal. He was a trulygreat person who lived up to the brilliance of his namesake Alva Edison. The next time I'm at an SPE meetingand someone tells me to move over to have my picturetaken or explains to me about how he made a break-through in tape recording tape I'll be thinking of Al.What a remarkable person, what a remarkable life, whata remarkable talent. We'll miss you Al.

Tribute to Alva Whitney
Indeed, it is a loss for the plastics in-
dustry, yet there are many things to
be remembered. Al had been so
faithful in attending P-NJ monthly
meetings for such a long time by
driving from Florida. He took care of
the sponsors for P-NJ newsletter for
quite some time. He will be deeply
missed!
S.T. Lee
Only knowing Al for the past 15 years, I feel shortchanged andwish I had known him last century! From the first time I methim, however, I could see that he was greatly respected by allwho knew him for his vast knowledge of the vinyl industry, hisdogged commitment to section monthly publication (SpecSheet) and his tireless dedication to the now Palisades – NewJersey Section of the SPE.
Since the merger of the Palisades and New Jersey Sections ofthe SPE, I had the opportunity to work with Al and quicklylearned firsthand why he was so well respected by all. Histenacity and dedication were unmatched as he proudly pro-claimed that he drove “990 miles each way” to attend ourmonthly section meetings. Additionally, our respect for thisamazing man was evidenced by the number on SPE sectionmembers who attended his funeral service where I was privi-leged to say a few words to his family on behalf of our section.Though I primarily expressed our great respect for Al and sym-pathy for the loss to both his family and our SPE family, I got asmile from all by noting how relieved travelers of I-95 will be onthe third Thursday of every month now that Al has officiallyended his journey. Rest in peace, Alva E. Whitney, Jr. you de-serve it. But know that we will continue to speak fondly of youthe third Thursday of every month!
Respectfully,
Tom Martin
One thing I would add about Al isthat the remarkable things he didseemed perfectly natural and obviousto him. For instance, he was alreadyin his late 90's when I asked him if hestill drove up non-stop from Floridaevery month. His reply was typical."No, I stop for gas." When he retiredfrom Goodyear, he passed out at thesection meeting booklets that listedall the standard antioxidants withtheir structures. Most people receivethings when they retire. Al, typically, gave gifts to those present, alwaysthinking of what he could do to helpother people.

Alva Edison Whitney, Jr. was a
proactive, energetic leader in the So-
ciety of Plastics Engineers, especially
in the formation of the Palisades Sec-
tion, which he served as the first
president. Al’s eyes sparkled and his
face reflected great satisfaction
whenever he had the opportunity to
comment on his heritage that in-
cluded the inventor of the cotton gin
– Eli Whitney. Al served as Editor for
the “SPEC SHEET” for many years,
and his dedication and determination
provided positive input for many of
his colleagues. He will be sorely
missed.
