Senior Class History
Here we are in the last year of h~gh school. Like the doctor ' s prescription, all of us have found that it has not been nearly so hard to take these four years as we thought it would be . Maybe it ' s because we are so near the horne stretch, but then again, maybe it's because of all the wonderful times we have to remember these four years by . Every cloud has its silver lining and: these times to us have brightened (at least a little} all the hard work and made it not only something to be endured, but something to be remembered as a very pleasant time in our lives .
Some of the bright spots to remember have been our par ties, dances, activity programs and wonder of wonders, some of our favorite classes. There were also farewell par ties for class members leaving for distant parts.
Our class members even achieved fame or fortune in some small way or another . Tony Deane was one who was selected to go to Stowe, Vermont, to the Junior National Ski races. Everyone of the Senior boys are on the school basketball team.
We are all looking forward to and planning for the last exciting events of our high school years : the JuniorSenior Prom & Banquet, and then--graduation:

Junior Class History
At the beginning of the year the Junior Class consisted of: Betty Larrew, Tommy Kearns, Kenny Strong, Joyce Christiansen, John Thorpe, David Stapleton, Anita Roberts, Carroll Cerise, Kathleen Randall, and Cleon Griffiths . Cleon later dropped out of school, leaving nine Juniors.
A class play was presented on November 9th and 1Oth. It was called "Take It Easy" and although we did "take it easy" a little too much during rehearsals , the play was quite a success and we enjoyed giving it, We later gave a movie at the Isis entitled "The Lawless"
A turkey dinner , donated by Mr, Knapp and cooked by the Junior girls, was given for the Junior Class, Mr. and Mrs . Autrey and Mr. and Mrs, Gann.
Everyone in the Junior Class lS very proud of our tw1.. members, David Stapleton and John Thorpe, who were among the five boys selected to represent A s pen at the Junior National Ski Race's in Stowe, Vermont.
All in all, we've had a pretty good year, and are looking forward to new fields to conquer during the oncoming Senior year.

Sophomore History
Our Freshman year was hard at first, Later w e learned to master our hardships , At the beginning of our high· school career, we boarded ship and prepared for the corning hurricanes. The biggest hurricane of all was Freshman Initiation, which turned out to be a lot of fun.
We were ten shipmates at the wheel: Miles Reich, Teddy Armstrong, James Bionaz, Roberta.Johnson, Ann Hollenbeck, Alice Earnst, Hannah Abrams, Ferne Brown, Muriel Sandstrom, and Kenneth Broughton.
Before we had been long out at sea, Hannah, Alice and Miles left our crew. No sooner did the F reshman voyage end than we found ourselves on another ship preparing for another voyage. This time we had nine shipmates, including Dav id Barbee and Harry Ilgen.
We still have some distance to sail, but we'r~ all hoping that we will continue to have as smooth sailing ahead as we have had in the past.

Freshman Class History
On September 4, 1950, a band of seventeen fear laden "Freslunen-to-be" entered high school. We knew that soon we would be initiated into full fledged high school students. The memorable initiation routine was carried.out for three days. Although it was rather rough at first, we soon became hardened Freshmen.
A few weeks later, we held our first class meeting, and elected our class officers with the assistance of our class sponsor, Mr. Knapp. The results were: P resident, Keith Marolt; Vice-President, Melvin Hoaglund; Secretary, Gloria Musso; Treasurer, Emily Thorpe; Social Chairman, Louise Bionaz.
Through our Freshman year, our cla ss has held several parties and all wer e v e r y successful. On the whol e, we've had a very good year, and we're all looking forward to the remaining three years of h igh school .
During our Freslunan year, our skiers have improved to a great extent. Max Marolt has received several high honors , and we all wish him continued success.

lt has been a year of activity •. . . . . . .
The Juniors practically froze to death putting on their class play in the Wheeler Opera House, . . , , The Music Department, under· Miss Irene Jenkinson's direction, produced a very clever operetta, "The Gallopin' Ghost, " and donated their entire gate to the March
of Dimes , .... . . . .. . .
The Wednesday afternoon skiing program has been both enjoyable and profitable , with many townspeope helping on the instruction. The non-skiers skated or worked with crafts, , . . A Saturday morning art class under Mr. Louis Wille has proven so much fun that even getting out of bed on Saturday hasn't been hard.
Our active moms and pops in PTA sponsored a Square Dancing Club this year, and a wonderful Hot Lunch Program .
Thanks to a lot of people ' s help Aslpen High School got in the limelight by sending our ski team to the National Junior Ski Races in Stowe, Vermont .. ..... .. .. .. our team did us proud, too .. ..... Tony, John, Max, Ted and David, with Mr . Reid, "did" New York in about three hours, in between trains , which is a record of some sort ..... .. . . . they missed more than they saw, but will always remember what they did see, we bet: --
Remember our teachers learning to ski this winter? .... . .. ... Those Sadie Hawkins outfits .. .. .. .. ... .. that nice Senior party in February .... . those cute little kids we interviewed in Sociology .. .. . .. . the field trip through the mine . .. ..... .. .. that wiener roast .when we were supposed to be observing the stars.

Basketball
For the first time in three years, our Aspen high-school basketball team secured the serviees of a coach. Although we won the first game with Silt, our progress has been rather erratic, We'd play very .well in one game and then go down in the next, Our major trouble was in the passing, We just didn ' t pass enough and what little passing we did needed improvement. Finally, Mr. Reid got it into our heads that we had to pass if we were going to even come close to winning games . We did eventually begin to click in the game with Carbond,dP. on February 23rd. We also showed a good deal of teamwork and training in our games with Basalt. At this stage we still have one remaining game with Silt which ·will determine our standing in the league and whether or not we will participate in the yearly tournament , To date, having lost all our games except the initial bout with Silt, we stand tied with Silt who has a similar record.
Our first team is made up of John Thorpe, Tony Deane, Byron Shipp, Carl Fifield, Ted Armstrong, and Kenneth Strong. The second team, which played remarkable ball all season, is made up of Harry llgen, Earl Ilgen, David Barbee, Paul Beck, David Ringle, Claude Connor , Glenn Smith and the manager of both teams Neil Beck. The coach, of course, is Mr. Royal Reid.
All the players were in complete agreement that we were very fortunate in having a very wonderful and loyal Pep Club, Even in defeat the Pep Club lost none of their enthusiasm and gave our team constant support ,
The splendid trampoline exhibition given at our games also did much to help our athletic program . The proficiency gained and the performances given by Kenneth Broughton, John Thorpe, Max Marolt and the other trampoline team members deserves special mention.

Ski Team
On the whole the record of our Junior Ski Team has approached the outstanding. After weeks of hard training on the mountain slopes, our team competed with many of the finest ski teams in the West, and finally went on to tackle national competition.
The team began the season with a memorable victory at Steamboat Springs, Colorado, and reached its peak at the Junior National Championship Meet which was held at Stowe, Vermont. The impressive victory in the Downhill at Ste amboat is apparent at first glance at the placement of our skiers. Max Marolt took top honors, with Tony Deane taking second place, and David Stapleton taking third. Johnny Thorpe and Ted Armstrong placed seventh and eighth respectively.
The Aspen team also left its mark at Ryan Park, Wyoming, where they participated in the SRMSA (Southern Rocky Mountain Ski Association) Junior Championships . The top Aspen Junior Skiier was David Stapleton taking second in the Combined, second in the Downhill, and fourth in the Slalom . Next came Tony Deane with a third in the Combined, third in the Downhill, and fifth in the Slalom. Ted Armstrong placed third in the Slalom, fourth in the Downhill, and fourth in the Combined. Max Marolt, the only Aspen Junior Skier who competed in Class II, placed second in the Slalom and fourth in the Combined.
Finally our team proudly marched off to the East thanks to the help and inspiration of the Aspen Community. The Nationals were originally scheduled to be held in Massachusetts but because of the absence of snow, they were held in Stowe, Vermont . Despite the nationwide competition, Aspen skiers chalked up a good record with Max . Marolt coming in second in the Downhill and third in the Combined, and Tony Deane taking fourth in the Slalom and tenth in the Combined.
At this writing, there are two remaining meets to be held at Winter Park, Colorado, and Berthoud Pass, Colorado. From the past record and the present condition of our skiers, we all feel snre that the winning streak will be continued.
