Road safety campaignerPauline makes TV appealA MOTHER’S 25 year cam-paign for traffic lights ata dangerous junction inNeston after the death ofher son was the subject ofITV current affairs pro-gramme Tonight.
Pauline Fielding, fromHeswall, called for moremoney to be spent on mak-ing the roads safer in To-night - Driving: The TrueCost, which was broadcaston Thursday.
Mrs Fielding wantslights placed at the junc-tion of Raby Park Roadand the A540 Chester HighRoad, the same locationwhere son Andrew lost hislife in 1994.
She told Tonight, pre-sented by Fiona Foster:“More money needs to bespent on making our roadssafe.
“There are lots of thingsthat need to be done. Idon’t want the same thingto have to happen to other
people as has happened tous”.
Andrew was drivingalong Chester High Roadwhen forced to swerve hisVauxhall Astra to avoida Volvo which cut acrosshis path at the junction ofRaby Park Road.
As he swerved, the18-year-old’s vehicle hit acar travelling behind. Hedied instantly.
The driver of the othercar involved has neverbeen traced.
In November NestonTown Council learnedabout the dangers of thejunction in letters fromtwo residents, suggestingthe need for an overhaulat the junction.
It led to a kerb realign-ment at the junction ofRaby Park Road which hassince been completed byCheshire West and Ches-ter Council.
The speed limit on theA540 between Raby ParkRoad and Lees Lane willalso remain the same aftera council review found the
limit was ‘most appropri-ate’ for that location.
Cllr Karen Shore, Chesh-ire West & Chester Coun-cil cabinet member forenvironment said traf-fic lights at this junctionwere “unfortunately notan option at this momentin time”.
In response, Mrs Field-ing, a member of roadsafety charity RoadPeace, said: “We trust fundingcan be found at the earli-est opportunity.
“We will continue tocampaign until this isachieved.”
Pauline’s campaign issupported by IndependentCheshire West and Ches-ter councillor for Park-gate, Martin Barker.
He said: “The A540 is avital link between Nestonand Parkgate and manyplaces of work, educationand leisure.
“So, it is essential that itis fit for purpose, and thatincludes it being safe andeffective for all road us-ers.”
