Welcome to our Festival ~ now with a Fringe !Welcome to 2 months of fantastic summer events. The Skye Festival or Fèis an Eilein was started in 1991, and after 5 very quiet years, it was resurrected in 2014 as one of the best small-venue festivals in Scotland, and was named as the Highland Community Initiative of the Year. Most of the programme is organised by SEALL, Skye Events for All, with additional events from various groups within the community of Sleat in the southern end of Skye. There are over 75 events ~ including Traditional Music, Theatre, Jazz, World Music, Film, Walks, Talks and lots more. The main venue of Sabhal Mòr Ostaig is stunning - perched on a cliff-top - while the old barn is a great cèilidh house. The Festival also takes place in small village halls and a private house. The Festival is very family-friendly and all events are very informal. It is easy to reserve tickets - it is also very likely there will be spare tickets at the door. We look forward to seeing you.

Fàilte don Fhèis againn ! Fàilte do dà mhìos de tachartasan sònraichte, samhraidheil ann an ceann a deas an Eilein Sgitheanach. Tha Fèis an Eilein air aiseirigh ann an 2014 mar aon dhe na fèisean bheaga as fheàrr ann an Alba. Tha am program a’ gabhail a-steach 75 cuirmean-ciùil, drama, filmichean, òraidean agus cuairtean a-muigh. Tha i stèidhte ann an Sabhal Mòr Ostaig ach bidh àitichean nas lugha air feadh na sgìre air an cur gu feum cuideachd. Tha faireachdainn cofhurtail, neo-fhoirmeil aig an fhèis, freagar-rach dha-rìreabh airson teaghlaich. Tha sinn an dòchas gum faic sinn sibh innte!

I am inspired by the changing light sequences of the Western Isles and I have often been awestruck at witnessing what feels like a heavenly scene. Light features strongly in my work. Whether it be light bouncing off the waters of the Hebrides or the sunlit sands before an encroaching storm or sunlight moving across the landscape. It is ever changing, ever travelling.”

In ‘Lady Sings the Blues’ (1972, 144 mins) pop star Diana Ross portrays legendary jazz singer Billie Holiday in this biographical drama.

Beginning with Holiday’s traumatic youth, the film depicts her early attempts at a singing career and her eventual rise to stardom, as well as her difficult relationship with Louis McKay (Billy Dee Williams), her boyfriend and manager. Casting a shadow over even Holiday’s brightest moments is the vocalist’s severe drug addiction, which threatens to end both her career and her life. Skip Gorman in concertSongs from the American WestSkip Gorman brings back to life the workaday world of the early settlers of the American West. His music is not the music of the Hollywood cowboy, but rather the simple, yet beautifully poignant music that was performed around campfires by cowboys and westward settlers in the 19th century. Skip brings to the music a scholar’s knowledge of the cowboy’s Celtic, Spanish and Afro-American roots as well as the personal experience gained by working as a cowboy on a ranch in Wyoming, along with an exquisite touch as a singer, guitarist, fiddler and mandolinist. ‘War of Buttons’ Family TheatreA beautiful, fun, poetic show for 3-11 yearsWith Compagnie Animotion Theatre.

Welcome to a tale of squabbles, scuffles…and buttons! George grows grapes. Bessie grows cabbages. One loves the sun. One loves the rain.

A petty squabble grows and grows and grows into…the war of the buttons!

In a silly and wonderful tale, buttons and friendships are lost and won, games are played, and audiences young and old can rediscover their inner child!

Told through an energetic mix of music, puppetry, clowning, movement and sign language, The War of the Buttons distinctive non-verbal vocabulary creates a show accessible to deaf, hearing and international audiences.

50 mins long for ages 3 -11 but suitable for all.

Stepdance workshopwith the Scottish Stepdance CompanyStepdance is a form of percussive dance style, with origins in Scotland, which has had a strong tradition in Cape Breton where Scottish emigrants settled. It was then re-introduced to Scotland, originally through workshops here in Sabhal Mòr Ostaig over 25 years ago.

The workshop is 1 hour long.

No previous experience is necessary. It is better to wear hard-soled shoes. There will also be the chance for existing stepdancers to learn new steps from the experts.

Wednesday, 2 August at 8 pmDiciadain, 26 An Lùnastal aig 8 fSabhal Mòr Ostaig (TDC main hall) SkyeThe Scottish Stepdance Companywith Jed Milroy and Jo JeffriesThe Scottish Stepdance Company showcases traditional percussive dance from the Highlands, accompanying the intricate rhythms of the steps with tunes old and new. First formed in 1998, the group was revived in 2013 after a break of almost a decade with the new show Galloway to Gaidhealtachd, a sell-out at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Distilling centuries of tradition, they share stories, get your feet tapping, and stir the emotions with a unique blend of music, dance and song.

With this show, they team up with Jed Milroy and Jo Jeffries to explore the links between the Scottish and old-time American traditions.

Jed Milroy is a multi-instrumental performer, singer, songwriter and community musician. He has performed in a wide variety of bands including Bluegrass Ceilidh specialists ‘The Homecoming String Band’ and psychedelic rockers ‘The Aliens’.

Edinburgh born Jo Jeffries sings and plays fiddle. Her musicality is shaped by her 10 years of experience as a contemporary dancer and choreographer. Jo and Jed play together as a duo and are also members of adventure folk pioneers, the ‘Whisky River Boat Band’.

This collaboration marries Scottish stepdance, American flatfooting and songs and tunes of all kinds. It all unites in a vibrant show encapsulating the cream of several traditions and showcasing these talented musicians and dancers at their best. Learn a little Gaelic! Bruidhinn Gaidhlig!A bheil thu ag iarraidh beagan Gàidhlig ionnsachadh?

Do you want to learn a bit of Gaelic?

Gaelic - traditionally the language of the Garden of Eden - is returning, through our Gaelic Medium Primary School, Bun Sgoil Shlèite or Sleat Primary School, and further education at Sabhal Mòr Ostaig, Scotland’s Gaelic College.

Gaelic is not (yet) used widely within the community, and not all Fèis helpers have Gaelic, but listen out!

A first lesson!

‘ch’ is the soft sound used in ‘loch’

‘bh’ and ‘mh’ are pronounced ‘v’

‘uh’ (in the phonetic) as in the slang ‘duh!’
