Moving onA number of students who complete the Level 3 course progress on to higher education getting places on an HND, foundation degree or full degree at university. These could be in travel, tourism, hospitality or business.

Students also move on to a wide range of exciting careers in the industry at trainee or junior management level with the likes of airlines, tour operators, travel agents, hotels or hospitality and leisure providers.

Career routes include aviation and cabin crew, resort representative, travel agent, hospitality, the events sector, visitor attractions and the cruise sector.

These courses can also set you up for a successful career in customer service, business - even teaching as a lecturer at a college.

Travel boss helps inspire the next generation of high fliersAs part of our Travel & Tourism programme you will get the opportunity to take part in a real work experience placement within the College’s very own travel agency, EDC Travel. EDC Travel has been opened in partnership with Hays Independence Group which operates numerous travel agents in the region.

The travel agency provides valuable work experience for the College’s Travel and Tourism students, who spend at least two weeks of their course working at EDC Travel.

This gives you real life experience of the industry, as well as providing you with the opportunity to develop the three most important skills required for successful employment in travel and tourism – the ability to sell, the ability to provide good customer service and great product knowledge.

Fay GortonTravel Consultant and ex-East Durham College student Fay Gorton was a successful Travel & Tourism student at the College in 2010/11.

She is now pursuing her dream of working in the travel industry as a travel consultant with the UK’s largest independent travel agent, Hays Travel.

Fay said: “I always had a passion for travelling and really wanted to get a job in the industry, so through gaining a relevant qualification I knew this would work to my advantage.

“I really enjoyed my time at EDC and on the course, gaining valuable knowledge of the travel industry and also meeting some great new friends. The lecturers were great too, very friendly and fantastic motivators.”

Fay is now absolutely loving her role with the north east travel giant.

“Every day is different. I’m continuously learning new things and improving my confidence. I absolutely love working at Hays and hope to be here for many years and one day manager of one of the shops or even a region,” Fay added.

Kelly ClarksonKelly joined East Durham College back in 2010 on the Level 2 Diploma in Travel and Tourism before successfully progressing on to the Level 3 Extended Diploma and is now in her second year at Sunderland University studying Tourism Management combined with Spanish.

Kelly said: “I never really had the opportunity to study this subject at school and I’d always wanted to travel the world.

“I found the course really interesting and we also got to go on some exciting trips and visits as part of it too, which was great.

“My lecturer and personal learning coaches were all fantastic and helped me loads.”

Studying on her course also helped open the door to a part-time job in hospitality for Kelly at Shotton Hall Banqueting Suites in Peterlee.

Jade Howe“I started on level 2 and have worked my way up to Level 3. The course is excellent and the teaching on the course is really good. Mandy, the Course Tutor, is so helpful.

“The opportunity to work in EDC Travel is great and gives you a taste of real work experience which I’m sure will benefit my chances of getting a job.

“In the future I want to go to university and study management within travel and tourism. I would definitely recommend the course to anyone interested in working within the Travel & Tourism industry.”
