about the Playwright

thornton wilder (1897-1975) Born in Madison, Wisconsin, and educated at Yale and Princeton, Thornton Wilder was an accomplished novelist and playwright whose works explore the connection between the commonplace and the cosmic dimensions of human experience. The Bridge of San Luis Rey, one of his seven novels, won the Pulitzer Prize in 1928, and his next-to-last novel, The Eighth Day received the National Book Award (1968). Two of his four major plays garnered Pulitzer Prizes, Our Town (1938) and The Skin of Our Teeth (1943). His play, The

Matchmaker ran on Broadway for 486 performances (1955-1957), Wilder’s Broadway record, and was later adapted into the record-breaking musical Hello, Dolly! Wilder also enjoyed enormous success with many other forms of the written and spoken word, among them translation, acting, opera librettos, lecturing, teaching and film (his screenplay for Alfred Hitchcock’s 1943 psycho-thriller, Shadow of a Doubt remains a classic to this day). Letter writing held a central place in Wilder’s life, and since his death, three volumes of his letters have been published. Wilder’s many honors include the Gold Medal for Fiction from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and the National Book Committee’s Medal for Literature. On April 17, 1997, the centenary of his birth, the US Postal Service unveiled the Thornton Wilder 32-cent stamp in Hamden, Connecticut, his official address after 1930 and where he died on December 7, 1975.

Wilder continues to be read and performed around the world. Our Town is performed at least once each day somewhere in this country, with his other major dramas and shorter plays not far behind. In 2008, Our Town and The Bridge of San Luis Rey were selected as a joint choice for the NEA’s “Big Read” Program. In recent years Wilder’s works have also inspired a growing number of adaptations, among them an opera based on Our Town (music by Ned Rorem, libretto by J.D. McClatchy) and a dramatized version of his novel, Theophilus North (Matt Burnett).

story of the Play

Here is a comedy about George Antrobus, his wife and two children, and their general utility maid, Lily Sabina, all of Excelsior, New Jersey. George Antrobus is John Doe, or George Spelvin, or you — the average American at grips with a destiny, sometimes sour, sometimes sweet. The Antrobuses have survived fires, flood, pestilence, the seven-year locusts, the ice age, the black pox and the double feature, a dozen wars and as many depressions. They run many a gamut, are as durable as radiators, and look upon the future with a disarming optimism. Alternately bewitched, befuddled, and becalmed, they are the stuff of which heroes are made — heroes and buffoons. They are true offspring of Adam and Eve, victims of all the ills that flesh is heir to. They have survived a thousand calamities by the skin of their teeth. Here is a tribute to their indestructibility. — Thornton Wilder

aCknowledgments Thanks to Professors John Neville-Andrews, Bert Cardullo, Gary Decker, Eric Fredricksen, Sarah Jane Gwillim, Philip Kerr, Annette Masson, Janet Maylie, Jerry Schwiebert, and Leigh Woods for showing me the ropes and sending me off into the world.  Thanks to Basement Arts for giving me my first directing opportunities and for making me passionate about the work. To Priscilla Lindsay for bringing me in and giving me this opportunity. And finally, to the BFA Performance classes of ‘97 and ‘98 - I am grateful every day to have gone through these formative years with you. — Jonathan Berry

Special thanks to Mark Gmazel, Sybil Boone, and Kevin Leeser. Additional thanks to Dermalogica. This production is entered in the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival.

Human beings are fallible. According to one origin myth, we made a choice in the garden to partake of the tree of knowledge. Partaking in that knowledge created in us both hope and fear, or rather belief in, or distrust of, the people with whom we go through existence. And from those two points of view stem all that is great and terrible in mankind. The balance of hope and fear in people determines their actions and propels them, either towards peaceful coexistence or wrathful aggression.

Written in 1940 and 1941, opening first in New York ten months after Pearl Harbor and the beginning of U.S. involvement in the 2nd great war of the still young century, Wilder, despite mounting evidence to the contrary, looked at the turbulent present and the destructive past, and saw in that tangle of evidence a reason to hope. For all of the horrors of the young century, and the centuries that came before, he saw progress. Or, as Mr. Antrobus states: “We’ve learned. We’re learning.”

No wide-eyed idealist, Wilder understood that the path of human progress was not an easy one. There is comfort that comes from the black and white clarity of war, when viewed in contrast with the terrible ambiguous greyness of peace. Working with, rather than fighting against, is always the more challenging course – and yet, it is always the most challenging course that yields the greatest results.

The course of human events is, I think, a tight spiral, wending slowly but surely ever upward. With every revolution, we climb ever so slightly higher – that much closer to a world of peace and shared prosperity. You can’t see it from where you are at, sadly.  It takes the long view – the view from a thousand miles away. It takes, unfortunately, faith – trust in the better nature of man, even as evidence piles up to the contrary. It is only through that faith that we can take up Wilder’s seemingly impossible charge, to “save the human race.”

Thank you for coming tonight – it feels really good to be home.— Jonathan Berry, Director, U-M class of 1997
