SIX VILLAGES NEWSLETTER

An insight into life in New Buckenham - I have lived in New Buckenham for nearly 25 years, firstly running the butchers in King Street for 17 years, which had previously been a butchers shop for some 100 years, and for the last 8 years running the Kings Stores in King Street, a well established store some 50 or more years ago which used to deliver to the doors of many in and around New Buckenham. Providing a service to the community at times is challenging. Over the last few months road closures and power cuts have tried our patience, but we carry on regardless! I can say I never get up in the morning and don’t want to go to work. I enjoy what I do and with continued support I hope I can for many years to come. Villages such as ours need such amenities in our village to survive otherwise we just become a place where people drive through without reason to stop. We are lucky to have a thriving community here in New Buckenham. Myself running the local shop, providing all sorts of provisions and services. Many of our elderly locals rely on us not just to shop, but to come for a chat and catch up on the gossip! A place to meet others. We have two excellent pubs, both not only providing somewhere to meet with friends and family but also providing us with some of the best pub grub around and of course not forgetting our coffee shop, another place where groups like to meet. Our church and village hall are both well used and provide our village with all sorts of activities to suit all age groups. And let’s also not forget our castle! An attraction to many who come to stay and love to visit. (key available from Kings Stores should anyone wish to visit). Community amenities in our villages such as these cannot survive without the input from those who live here and pass through. We all as conscientious individuals need to consider our actions. For many years before us people have fought to build what we now have today and it would be a shame to lose it. Sue Cattermole (New Buckenham Kings Stores)

Thankyous for community grants Renovations to Garnier Village Hall, Eccles - Thank you so much for the generous grant. This is brilliant news as we are carrying out some extensive works at the Hall. I will of course update you on how the money has been spent. With thanks again to the Newsletter Team. Regards Peter Lotarius for Garnier Village Hall Trustees.

Summer holiday family play and lunches - I would like to thank the Six Villages Newsletter for the small grant given towards the running of play and refreshment sessions held at St Mary’s, Banham during the school holidays. Joy Stanley

Garden Jottings from Ken

This is a wonderful time of year in the garden, it’s true that some things may be beginning to look a bit tired but your plot as a whole should still look impressive. Colourful late summer flowering perennials such as Japanese anemones, verbena, sedums and Toad lilies, together with the exotic-looking blooms of cannas, dahlias and nerines will keep the season alive a little longer. Of course it’s not all about flowers, foliage can also provide an outstanding display of its own. As the day-length shortens and night-time temperatures start to cool, the autumnal hues of deciduous plants begin to show. These will be especially noticeable on acers, cotinus, vines, cornus and even blueberries prior to leaf-drop, when evergreens come in to their own to provide winter interest. The end of summer is a busy time of tidying and cutting back, but it's also the perfect time to create a new border, or to make changes to an existing one while your memory is still fresh regarding what has and hasn’t performed well during the year. Although it might feel cooler to us, soil temperatures are still relatively warm and this means that fresh plantings have time to establish before the onset of winter, giving them a head-start in the spring. For new areas make sure that the soil is fully prepared by incorporating well-rotted manure (available from us in clean sealed bags), this will add structure, opening up heavy soils and retaining moisture on light sandy sites. You can also spread composted manure over existing beds and any empty space on the vegetable plot where the worms will magically draw it down over time. As gardeners we need to be patient, a little work today will be rewarded later, so now is the time to plant spring and early summer flowering bulbs such as crocus, alliums, narcissi, tulips, etc. Mark their position in the borders to save accidentally digging them up again, or slip some into containers under some cheerful winter pansies, soft heathers, or a selection from the many new varieties of heuchera, for a stunning seasonal display!

Cheers, Ken The Garden Enclosure, Banham - giving Autumn a real welcome!

Reports from Local Clubs Attleborough and District Gardening Club – A wonderful display of fruit, vegetables, flowers, cookery, handicrafts and photos greeted the many visitors to the Club's annual Autumn Show at the Connaught Hall in Attleborough on Saturday 7 September. Judging had preceded the show and cups and trophies were presented by the Mayor of Attleborough, Tony Crouch at the end of the Show. Pauline Garrad in particular had a very successful afternoon winning six trophies and visiting exhibitors also picked up several of the trophies. Our next meeting is on Wed 16th October at Attleborough Primary School, Besthorpe Road, 7.30pm when Simon White will be giving a demo on making a holly wreath. Visitors and new members are always most welcome. For more information contact Jenny North on 01953 455481.

Old Buckenham WI – The speaker at our August meeting was Michael Weatherstone who gave a very interesting talk about Norfolk’s village signs. Over 15 months he has visited every village and hamlet in Norfolk, resulting in a well illustrated book of over 400 signs published in 2014, 'Norfolk, a History Through its Village Signs'. About half of Norfolk's signs were instigated by W.I.s as was Old Buckenham's. Showing a selection of pictures, Michael explained his experiences and some of the history behind the signs. Arrangements were made for a visit to Norwich Cathedral's Broderers Guild and a tour of the Hotter shoe shop in Norwich. The next meeting is on Thursday 24th October at 7.30pm in Old Buckenham Village Hall to celebrate our WI’s 52nd Birthday with a party. Visitors very welcome. Contact Betty on 01953 454790 for more info.

Breckland Flower & Garden Club – At our September meeting our speaker Sarah Hammond presented a beautiful talk with a slide show of delightful Peonies. She told us a little bit about herself and how she had married a farmer whose mother had a passion for Peonies, which she became enchanted by too and now has a very successful business growing and supplying seasonal Norfolk flowers for all occasions (www.englishpeonies.co.uk ). The Clubs next meeting is in OB Village Hall, Thursday 10th October at 2pm with Adele Kent and her demonstration entitled “Top Hat and Tails We are planning a Charity Ploughman’s Lunch in Bunwell Village Hall on Wed 30th Oct 12noon to 2pm. View from the Rectory October

Every  now and then people ask me what the church is saying about current issues like climate change, Brexit, and so on. What I find hard is the assumption that the church would have a nice one or two sentence summary of what it thinks, as if it should be a simple matter for Christians to have come to a common mind when the highest debating chamber in our land has not. It has been said that the Brexit referendum was ‘a little bit like asking whether we should paint the room green or ‘another colour’, and when the vote was, by a very close margin, ‘another colour’, thinking that the question was settled and we could go out and buy the paint.’ Even ‘Brexit’ as a word assumes it was a binary choice when in reality there are many ways of relating to the European Union. The trouble is that we are/I am often unwilling to grapple with reality when it’s complicated and much prefer a simple statement or sound byte, and of course, often, we are in fact quite good at offering summaries of complicated arguments. Just as Brexit is presented as though it’s a simple binary choice, in or out, faith in God is often presented the same way – do you believe in God, or not? It’s a simple question isn’t it? There are some who would be clear on either Yes or No, but for most, it depends on what kind of God you’re talking about and it’s not a simple question. God – an impersonal ‘force’, an invisible (imaginary?) confidant, a long absent creator, an essential life-essence infusing everything, an incomprehensible spirit of some sort, a person known only by those with special ‘sensing’ ability? I do believe in God, and there is someone who clarifies what I mean by that whose birth we celebrate in a few months time. If Brexit means Brexit, then God means God, and I encourage you to grapple with the deeper questions about him because, like Brexit, we can delay, but we’ll have to face him sooner or later. You could wind a Christian up with a question on what the church believes about Brexit or Climate Change, but the more important question you could ask would be about God . Steve Wright

News from Norfolk County Council Old Buckenham Pedestrian Crossing - Following a prolonged sterling effort the new pedestrian crossing on the B1077 was opened on Weds 4th September, the first day of the school term. It was clear that with four schools now on Abbey Road some crossing provision was necessary to give children and parents alike the confidence to be able to cross the busy road without having to run the gauntlet. This new facility is a major achievement for the parish. Well done to all those concerned for their work in bringing it to fruition. Life-saving defibrillators for all Norfolk’s recycling centres - All of Norfolk’s 20 recycling centres now has a newly installed defibrillator on site for the very first time. This life-saving equipment is not only set to benefit people using recycling centres but also those that live and work nearby, as these 20 new machines bring defibrillators to areas that have not had one until now. All the defibrillators are registered with the ambulance service and site staff have been trained to use them in emergency situations. The cost of the defibrillators is being funded through existing recycling centre budgets.

Banham Parish Council, keeping you informed

All Councillors are back from their August break, ready and willing for action. The meeting on 4th September was well attended and Councillors heard that work on the church path will start in early October. A new contractor was hired in August to cut the grass and so far has done a splendid job, as complimentary comments from residents attest to. The long running application to build 43 houses on a green field site in Kenninghall Road was reignited with plans of the houses. This was unanimously

recommended for refusal by the Parish Council, as the designs are without character, out of keeping with nearby dwellings and the gardens are too small. An application for change of use of three agricultural buildings at Hunts Corner into five houses was similarly recommended for refusal by the Parish Council, as the area is too small, the original buildings would have to be demolished and the access road is a single, rough, unsurfaced track, with no possibility of widening it. Since then, prior permission has been refused. Another application for Outline Planning permission for access to a green field site, near a sharp bend in Mill Road, to build 5 houses with access for 10 vehicles, was also recommended for refusal, as a traffic hazard, especially to the pupils of Acorn Park School and as over development, being outside of the settlement boundary and a fair distance from amenities. There are also concerns that planned access to the remainder of the field could lead to further applications to build. Just a reminder, if you spot any potholes or other road defects, just contact me and I'll report it for you. Geraldine, Parish Clerk, 01953 887327 or [email protected]

Banham Community Centre – The Community Centre held two dances last month and managed to make a small profit for the centre. The second dance was a fund-raising event for Priscilla Bacon Lodge. The Centre helped the family and band members of “The Encores” to stage the event and was able to donate £1820 to the Lodge which is a specialist palliative care centre in Norwich. Almost 200 people attended what was a very enjoyable evening. We are actively seeking some volunteers to join the Banham Community Centre as committee members to become involved in planning events and activities for local residents. For example we are interested in putting up a notice board in the village to display activities. We also need some assistance to update the website so any one with I T skills would be appreciated. The committee meets on the third Wednesday of every month (next one 16th October). If you are interested in getting involved please come along. Contact Brian on 01953 887008 to find out more.
