The Six Steps for Teaching Diversity By Terrence R Bomar Slide 2 Diversity in the Classroom Teaching diversity within the classroom can often be a difficult task for many educators Many educators fear teaching or even acknowledging the differences of their students There are SIX STEPS that can assist educators in incorporating diviersity into their classroom and curriculum Slide 3 1. Start Early Begin teaching children to love themselves at an early age (usually starting in kindergarten) Prepare chidlren for what they will see in the media Use Science to demonstrate how differences between people and things are normal and not negative Slide 4 2. Emphasize Openness Teach students to be forthcoming about their differences DO NOT single out a student because of his/her culture Slide 5 3. Discuss All Types of Differences Disucuss gender, size, and learniing abilities Offer or share names of famous people/celebreties with similar difference into discussions Offer ways to overcome their vulnerabilites Slide 6 4. Let the Curriculum Work for You Use social studies and literature to teach diversity through real life issues and people (through project based assignments) Have students research foreign influences on foods, clothes, and music on American culture Slide 7 5. Use Real Life Examples Incorporate parents and speakers into lessons or discussions Slide 8 6.
