encouragement as they settle into their new church home.

I especially love the opportunity to share my personal testimony with each group that attends. Most of you guys have heard me at one time or another tell how Jesus touched my life as a college freshman, and how the commitment I made to him at that time completely changed the trajecto-ry of my life. That’s the power of the gospel! After I share my story at each one of these dinners, we always give an opportunity for anybody that’s present to receive Jesus as their Savior, too. This time, as always, several people did so. What a thrill and a blessing that is!

I say all that to you so that you may encourage a friend or a family member to connect with our next Dinner with the Pastor on November 1. You can go on-line to register at lexingtonbap-tist.org (no charge; Wee Care is provided) or call the church office for more information (803.359.4146). This is an en-gaging, fun and effective way to

reach out to someone around you and help them find Jesus.

We’re going to spend the four Sundays in October in the book of Proverbs, in a sermon series called “A Word to the Wise.” Proverbs is a critical portion of God’s Word that is packed, not just with good advice, but the actual mind of God in how we are to live, make decisions and

prosper in our lives. Each week we’ll be exploring cru-cial issues like the nature of wisdom, how

to use our words wisely, anger and wisdom and how to be wise in our relationships.

But that’s not all! Proverbs has 31 chapters, a peculiar trait that lends it to daily reading. In other words, if you read one chapter a day as part of your daily devo-tional, you can cover the entire book in one month. That’s what I’m asking you to do through the month of October—so as I preach through this gem of God’s Word, you can be read-ing along on a daily basis. To encourage you in that reading, we’ll be posting on our web site

“The Lord has a reason for leading every new

person into our congregation...”Every couple of months we host

a dinner here at LBC called, “Dinner with the Pastor,” a free event for anyone interested in getting more information about our church family in order to formally join our fellowship. I al-ways love these dinners—there’s lots of excitement among the many people who attend. The Lord has a reason for leading ev-ery new person into our congre-gation, and you can sense their enthusiasm as they share their spiritual journey with the group. Our deacons play a key role in the dinner, as each prospec-tive member is assigned a dea-con mentor, to help them learn about our church and give them

each week a schedule of readings from the book for that week, along with a few insights, suggestions and encouragements. If you already have a regular Bible reading plan as part of your daily time with the Lord, feel free to incorporate this Proverbs plan into whatever you’re already doing. Or maybe take a break from your regular schedule in order to spend some time resting in this portion of God’s Word. On the other hand, if you don’t have a regular Bible reading plan in place, what better time to begin than now? Just go to our web site each morning through the month of October and follow the prompts as you allow the Word to speak into your heart. I know you’ll be blessed!

Believing God for a great month together!

The Importance of Disciple-MakingMy family and I are so excited God has called us to Lexington Baptist Church! We already have a great love for this community and the wonderful people of LBC. I want to thank you for the many calls, cards and prayers so many of you have lifted for Rayna as she recovers from surgery. We have felt God’s presence in our lives as you have stood in the gap praying for her.

Our vision at LBC is making disciples. In Matthew 28:19-20 we find the Great Commission given by our Lord. Jesus commanded us to, “Go and make disciples…” In order for us to make disciples we must be a disciple. Over the next year we will unveil numerous ways you can get involved and become a disciple-maker. For now, let me encourage you to get involved in one of our many Sunday school classes. We have great teachers who are well-prepared every week with a word from the Lord. If you don’t have a class you currently attend, please stop by the Information Desk, located just outside of the Worship Center, and one of our volunteers will be happy to assist you.

I also wanted to encourage anyone who would like to be a part of our Frontline Ministry teams to please contact me at [email protected]. We are seeking outgoing, smiling faces to help us greet, reach and encourage first time guests and members to our beautiful campus. Will you consider being the face of LBC and helping us make a great first impression every Sunday? Hebrews 10:24 says, “And let us stir up one another to love and good works…” I am praying we will stir up one another in love!

See you Sunday,Mark Owens

Student Ministry Families,

October is filled with great opportunities for your students. Every Wednesday night, from 6 to 7:30 p.m., we have Encounter 431 upstairs in our Family Life Center. Each Wednesday, students have the opportunity to eat together, hang out with their peers and engage in worship and small groups. Encounter 431 is a game changer for our students. Parents, don’t let your students miss out on this chance to get connected into this ministry and grow in their relationship with the Lord.

We have two big tailgates in the month of October. The first will take place on October 16 at Lexington High School.

We will set up in the booster club lot at 6 p.m. with food and tailgate activities. Come out and watch Lexington take on River Bluff. The second tailgate takes place on October 30 at River Bluff. We will be in the booster parking lot at 6 p.m. Join us for a fun night of fellowship and football.

If you are a parent of a high school student, please take note: on the night of October 30, we are having our second annual High School Lock-Out. Students will meet at the Family Life Center at 10 p.m. We will be using the church buses that evening for transportation. The cost for this event is $35. Students will be going bowling, to The Plex and then IHOP that evening. There is a student release form that needs to be signed before your student can participate at this event. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact Daniel Walker or myself anytime. We are praying for your families. Have a blessed October.

Blessings,

Leading SmallEncounter 431 is a midweek gathering for students, but it’s also our gathering time for our adult volunteers and the small groups of students they lead. This same structure also carries over to our Sunday Morning time. We have some amazing small group leaders that pour into our students week in and week out on Sundays, Wednesdays and beyond. I hear stories upon stories where our small group leaders are making a difference in the lives of the students they meet with each week. With a student ministry this size it takes more than just a few adults modeling discipleship to be able to make disciples affectively. Student ministry is not about numbers but about intentionality. We’ve adopted the concept of “Lead Small” within our student ministry so that no student falls through the cracks. Lead Small is simply five big ideas that every small group leader needs to know: 1. Be Present: connect their faith to a community2. Create A Safe Place: clarify their faith as they grow3. Partner With Parents: nurture an everyday faith4. Make It Personal: inspire their faith by your example5. Move Them Out: engage their faith in a bigger story To learn more about becoming a part of our adult leadership team, contact Ian Geimer or myself. Let’s say yes to the Next Generation of students. LBC SENIOR ADULTS& Congregational CareThe Parent Care

Conversation

Sunday, October 4 12 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall

Are there some changes happening in your parents’ lives that have you a little worried about them? Have you found yourself in a place where the ta-bles are beginning to turn, where you

are taking some responsibility for some of your parents’ physical, financial or emotional needs? Adult children are more often discovering their need to have some difficult conversations with their parents about finances and other things but are afraid to start them.

On Sunday afternoon, October 4, Lexington Baptist Church will host a seminar designed to help you think through some of the basic steps in providing parent care. The seminar is titled, “The Parent Care Con-versation: The Essential Conversations Parents and Adult Children Should Have…But Nobody Will Start.” Dr. Kevin Skipper and Chris Sheffield co-authored the book “The Parent Care Conversation” and will be on our campus to get you started in the right direction towards having these important conversations.

Topics will include: how to honor your father and mother – a Biblical approach to the conversations, tasks and challenges of parent care; the money conversation; the house conversation; the levels of care conversation; the essential legal conversation. We will wrap our time together with an opportunity for you to ask questions related to parent care.

Cost for this seminar will be $15, which covers lunch and all materials and handouts. You can reg-ister by contacting Marceil Mangum, ministry assistant to senior adults and congregational care, at 803.996.8843 or [email protected].

Service of RemembranceSunday, November 154 p.m. in the Chapel

Spending time with family and friends during the holidays can be enjoyable yet stressful. Having to face the holidays with the memories of burying a family member can be dreadful. Lexington Baptist Church will be hosting a Service of Remembrance on Sunday, November 15th at 4 PM in our Chapel. We are inviting any who have lost a loved one (this year or years’ past) to join us for this special ser-vice. It will include special music and a message of hope as well as an opportunity to light a candle in memory of your loved one. You are invited to bring a picture of your loved one to display in the Chapel before and during the service. The service will conclude with light refreshments in the Reception Hall (adjacent to the Worship Center). Our prayer is that this service will provide hope and comfort with the coming holiday season. Will you make plans now to join us for this special service?

Senior Adult Fall RetreatRidgecrest Conference Center

November 9-11, 2015

Make plans now to join us on our annual Fall Retreat! I am excited to announce that we’ll retreat at Ridgecrest this year, Hopefully this will prove to be a relaxing couple of days away before the busyness of Thanksgiving and Christmas really hit. The colors of Fall should still be evident and Ridgecrest is known for its scenic beauty. We’ll have praise & worship and bible study as the focus of our large group gatherings,

and we’ll give you some opportunity for relaxing along the way. For any golfers interested in attending, we’ll have a chance to play the Black Mountain Golf Course, home of the famous 747 yard par 6 17th hole, at one time the longest hole in the world.

On the way to Ridgecrest, we’ll stop in Charlotte for a tour of the Billy Graham Library (if you’ve never been, you don’t want to miss this experience!). For costs and more information, contact Marceil at [email protected] or call her at 803.996.8843.

“MUSIC IS MY LIFE"... REALLY?Everybody wants to find something in life they are really good at, and when we do, the temptation is there to let that talent or that ability become our focus in life. This is where Satan trips us up because he wants us to become idolaters who will put anything ahead of God. Satan has no problem with you having God “in your life.” He just wants to make sure that God is not #1 in your life!

I came across this testimonial by a young lady about the impact that music has had on her life. I am thrilled that music can be used for such a powerful motivation in a person’s life, but what if God was actually first place in her life? If so, I believe she would find that God’s gift of music, while being a tremendous blessing and tool in her life, is not the source of her joy in life, God’s Salvation is the source of her joy. Your source for abundant living must be something that you will never lose or cannot be taken away from you. Musical talent will fade or can be taken in a single accident or sickness. Once you surrender your life to Jesus, that relationship is permanent for eternity!

Here is the power of music:

When I joined band I never knew how drastically it could change my life. Music gave me the energy and motivation to get involved with other sports. It helped me realize that I could have a better and healthier lifestyle. Music made me start dancing, without caring who was watching. Before I started high school, I was shy, quiet, and unnoticed. When I joined band, I changed. I became a better, more outgoing person. Music is the one thing in my life that makes sense and is a huge part of my life. Music is, and always will be my life, my soul, my greatest achievement, and my passion.

Here is the power of the Holy Spirit:

When I became a follower of Jesus Christ I never knew how drastically it could change my life. Jesus gave me the energy and motivation to get involved with what really matters in this life. God’s Word helped me realize that I could have a better and healthier lifestyle. The Holy Spirit in me made me start dancing, without caring who was watching. Before I started high school, I was shy, quiet, and unnoticed. When I trusted in Jesus, I changed. I became a better, more outgoing person. My personal relationship with God is the one thing in my life that makes sense and is a huge part of my life. Jesus is, and always will be my life, my soul, my greatest achievement, and my passion. And I am so thankful to God for His gift of music in my life to express my joy in Him!

Joyfully Yours,Dan Williams

“Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.’ Then the righteous will answer him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?’ And the King will answer them, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.”

- Matthew 25:34-40

God is doing amazing things through our Prison Ministry here at LBC. Throughout, the month of October, we will highlight how God is making disciples behind prison walls. Are you interested in any of these ministry opportunities?

- Committing to pray- Donating and collecting Bibles- Filling prison packets for Christmas- Writing notes of encouragement to inmates

Or perhaps, God is leading you to step behind the walls and serve in…

- Worship services- Bible studies- Life skills classes- Fellowship meals during the holidays

Here is what an inmate in a local prison had to say regarding a recent fellowship meal:

“I want to take this opportunity to thank you for your unbelievable gesture of love and compassion. I mean this from the bottom of my heart! I mean, the thought that you would make time to come and share with us a special meal is nothing short of amazing! And it was delicious! (I can tell the time and loving dedication that it took to put it together . . . a detail that did not go unnoticed by our Heavenly Father, nor by my heart, and the hearts of many people here). Then, the singing . . . it was truly heavenly! (Especially the song: “Mary, did you know?” That has been one of my favorites of all the Christmas songs. And your rendition was very, very touching! A testimony that it was not merely a “spirit of performance” as we see in our churches nowadays. Some people sing to be seen and appreciated by people. You sang with your heart . . . and to be seen and appreciated by God himself! That makes all the difference. And how my heart was touched by such anointed music and singing!”

And here is a testimony from one of our wonderful prison ministry volunteers:

Being a part of our prison ministry allows me to be obedient to God’s calling on my life to share the love of Jesus Christ with these men. Under the guidance of The Holy Spirit I try to challenge and encourage them with God’s word. So many of them are lost and drifting through life. They need to know there is hope and freedom and it is

NOVEMBER: ORPHAN FOCUS

We have many things planned for November to focus on God’s special love for orphans and those families who are showing God’s love to orphans and foster children. We are planning a huge celebration on November 8 as Johnny Carr, author of “Orphan Justice,” will be speaking at both morning services. Please keep watching for details about this event and other exciting things in November.

Serving Prisoners & Their FamiliesDuring the Christmas Season

Many prisoners have no visitors nor do they receive gifts at Christmas. This year, you can help alleviate this in our area by providing hope and love with a Christmas Prison Packet. A list of approved items is available in the Worship Center foyer as well as a collection area for assembled packets.

Additionally, we will again serve the children of inmates through our Angel Tree Ministry. Please visit the Prison Min-istry display in the Worship Center foyer for more informa-tion.

Please contact me at [email protected] or 996-8836 if you would like more information about our Prison Ministry or becoming involved in making disciples through local, national, and international missions.

our calling to make sure they are looking in the right place: God’s word. God is at work in the prisons, souls are being saved, and being where He wants me serving Him causes inexpressible joy in my heart. I cannot do otherwise. The truth is setting them free and we have to let them know because that is what He did for me.

Throughout the month of October, we will be collecting new and gently-used Bible to distribute in our local prisons. There will be a collection area in the church foyer.
