DESCRIPTION

The Lehman SI Star model was developed from the UMKC SI Model, constructivist pedagogy, project management, facilitation, and community and family resiliency theories. The SI Star model was implemented in the Spring 2010 semester at Lehman College and has improved SI Session quality and consistency as well as contributed to the overall success of the program with students and faculty. During the workshop, we will demonstrate the SI Star Model and its use in structuring SI Leader activities and responsibilities.

The SI STAR Model: A Dynamic Approach to Teaching and Learning

The STAR illustrates the dynamics connecting the key participants of the STAR Mentoring and Coaching Program/ SI Program. Dynamics are defined as “change- producing forces” by the Encarta Dictionary, and we believe the dynamics of communication, goals, process, resources, and time are active in and between each of the participant roles in the Program.

The SI STAR Dynamics: The Significance of Goals

Goals can be defined many ways. A goal can be thought of in terms of time. For example, a goal is something you create at one point in time that you would like to accomplish at another point in time. A goal can also be the movement of your journey to get to your goal.

The SI STAR Dynamics: The Significance of Our Process

Processes move in lines and circles, sometimes forwards, sometimes backwards, and sometimes sideways. Processes can be like a dance: each step is part of a larger story, and each step has its own importance in telling that story. A linear process moves directly from one step or motion to another until the goal is reached. A cyclical process repeats steps and sometimes moves out of sequence to emphasize that some movements are more important than others and to make sure that the rhythm of the process is understood.

The SI STAR Dynamics: The Significance of Resources

Resources are sources for using time effectively, completing goals, accomplishing processes, and communicating with others. Resources help me to learn skills and information and to find the energy I need to keep going. Resources can be physical (food, shelter, transportation) or abstract (information, relationships, concepts). I may or may not be aware of my resources ( the air I breathe, the chair that I am sitting on), and I use and create resources just by being alive. I share resources with others even though other may not use the same resources in the same ways that I do.

The SI STAR Dynamics: The Significance of Communication

Communication connects process and goals. Even when I am working alone, I am communicating with myself by reminding myself of what I want to do and by making plans of what to do next. Communication shares information between people and between people and things. When I communicate, I give information about what I am thinking and experiencing; I also receive information about what others are thinking and experiencing. These shared thoughts and experiences add up to the resources I need to be successful in making things happen.

The SI STAR Dynamics: The Significance of Time

Time is something I don’t see, touch, taste, hear, or smell. Time is one of the most important parts of life, and yet time depends on how I measure minutes, seconds, and days in response to how other people measure their minutes, seconds, and days. I measure time to decide how long I will need to achieve a goal. I measure time to decide the most effective ways to break up my processes into steps. Time connects with communication when I am “running late,” “on time,” and “out of time.” I say these things to people who expect my time to be their friend: usually I think of time as something I flight in order to reach my goals and enjoy my life.

The SI STAR Roles in Relation to the Dynamics

Students communicate with their instructors and their STAR Coaches/ SI Leader to attain goals of academic and professional success, learn the processes that will help them to succeed, and practice effective use of resources and time in order to establish effective skills to complete short and long- term projects.

Instructors set goals for their students, communicate those goals through modeling and practice of effective processes for both their students and STAR Coach/SI Leader, and mentor students and the Star Coach in the effective uses of resources and time relevant to the mastery of historically difficult course

content and skills.

The SI STAR Roles in Relation to the Dynamics

Coaches/SI Leader use facilitation skills and strategies as peer education processes to assist students in learning to manage their time and resources to succeed in their current courses and future work. STAR Coaches model effective communication and goal-setting with their instructors: this modeling encourages STAR Coaches to improve their own academic and professional skills and to achieve greater success in their chosen fields.

Mentors/Assistant Supervisors meet weekly with their assigned STAR Coach/SI Leader to communicate about the STAR review sessions and program needs, to assist with effective time management, processes, and use of resources, and to review goals for short- and long-term professional development. STAR Mentors meet biweekly with the STAR Coordinator to improve their own understanding and expertise in dynamics and to provide program feedback to the STAR Mentoring and Coaching Program/ SI Program Staff.

The SI STAR Roles in Relation to the Dynamics

As the program Manager, The STAR Mentoring and Coaching Program/ SI Program provides the framework for dynamics through trainings in effective communication skills, goal-setting, and goal-attainment, advanced use of facilitation and study processes linked in success in STAR targeted courses, development and maximization of resources, and excellent time management skills essential to all phases of project development and competition. The STAR Mentoring and Coaching Coordinator meets with faculty, administrators, STAR Mentors and STAR Coaches to communicate program goals and processes, to share and increase resources, and to set schedules for the implementation of projects in a timely manner.
