St. Odilo Church is the only parish in the United States dedicated to the Souls in Purgatory. It was founded and sanctioned as the Shrine of the Poor Souls by His Eminence, George Cardinal Mundelein, in 1928, with a special indulgence of 200 days granted upon each visit to the shrine.

This coming Monday, September 7, is Labor Day. Undoubtedly Labor Day is a national and civic holiday, founded to recognize and celebrate the organized labor movement in these United States of America. Howev-er, I believe that this celebration of work and working men and women has religious significance as well. We recall the most famous workman, at least in the Catholic tradition, is St. Joseph who was chosen by God to be the spouse of the Virgin Mary and the foster father of Jesus Christ. St. Joseph was a carpenter by trade and undoubtedly taught carpentry to Jesus. By the work of their own hands, Jesus and St. Joseph bless human labor and underscore the dignity of work and of the worker. Man lives, as the Book of Genesis teaches us, by the sweat of his brow. Men and women provide for their families by the work of their hands and of their intellect. And He is, above all else, God Who gives us the brain power and the hand power to conceive of goals and to bring them to fruition. So, while we celebrate the day of the American worker, let us also thank God for giving us the ability to work and blessing our work with dignity. September 8, The Feast of the Birth of Mary On Our Lady's birthday the Church celebrates the first dawning of redemption with the appearance in the world of the Savior's mother, Mary. The Blessed Virgin occupies a unique place in the history of salvation, and she has the highest mission ever commended to any creature. We rejoice that the Mother of God is our Mother, too. Let us often call upon the Blessed Virgin as "Cause of our joy", one of the most beautiful titles in her litany. Since September 8 marks the end of summer and beginning of fall, this day has many thanksgiving celebrations and customs attached to it. In the older form of the Roman Ritual there is a blessing of the summer harvest and fall planting seeds for this day. The winegrowers in France called this feast "Our Lady of the Grape Harvest." The best grapes are brought to the local church to be blessed and then some bunches are attached to hands of the statue of Mary. A festive meal which includes the new grapes is part of this day. In the Alps section of Austria this day is "Drive-Down Day" during which the cattle and sheep are led from their summer pastures in the slopes and brought to their winter quarters in the valleys. This was usually a large caravan, with all the finery, decora-tions, and festivity. In some parts of Austria, milk from this day and all the leftover food are given to the poor in honor of Our Lady’s Nativity.

Merciful God, hear our fervent prayer for all who suffer from the coronavirus. May those who are infected receive the proper treatment and the comfort of your healing presence. May their caregivers, families and neighbors be shielded from the onslaught of the virus. Give solace to those who grieve the loss of loved ones. Protect and guide those who strive to find a cure, that their work may conquer the disease and restore com-munities to wholeness and health. Help us to rise above fear. We ask all this through the intercession of Our Lady of Lourdes, and in the name of your Son, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit, now and forever. Amen. You shall not fear the terror of the night nor the arrow that flies by day, nor the pestilence that roams in darkness, nor the plague that ravages at noon. Ps 91:5-6
