THEME 7 : COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT Wherever the men and women settled in the Shire, social interaction in its various forms soon followed and communities evolved in spite of, and even because of, the distances and obstacles separating them. Often the community which emerged bore the strong stamp of nationality or religion; in others there was a common interest in agricultural pursuits, a commitment to the education of children, or simply a need to socialise, play games, to enjoy precious leisure time. The communities grew up interwoven with the towns and villages which were the forums for gatherings, the stages for activity. Most developed a sense of self-identification, an allegiance to a district, and a feeling of distinctiveness from other districts, which survives today. The Shire's topographic division into two valleys appears to have contributed most to this phenomenon - the Paterson - Allyn - Gresford district is clearly distinct from the Clarence Town - Dungog area. The moulding of communities over one and a half centuries was not always an orderly process of development, however. Communities thrived in prosperous times, succumbed to drought and flood; they were divided when an influx of new settlers invaded the occupied lands and by political, religious and class differences; they were strengthened in times of war but diluted when large numbers of younger people moved away in the face of unemployment and declining industries. Four major themes have been selected as "windows" on the growth of the Shire's communities - religion and churches, education and schools, community organizations and activities, and leisure activities. An examination of the patterns of each will allow us to build up a picture of Dungog's nineteenth and twentieth century community life. 1. 1. Religion and Churches

The Shire's earliest churches were roughbuildings, often located on the estates oflarge landowners, and occasionally on the

sites of future towns. Sometimes barns,schools or stores were used for services whereno church had been built. As people managedto establish themselves, more substantialchurches were built in the towns, sometimesfollowed by large and impressive thirdchurches such as those built at the turn ofthe century. It was a pattern which recurredfrequently in accordance with the waves ofsettlers arriving in both settled andunsettled areas during the nineteenth century.Generally, the Anglicans erected theirchurches first, followed closely by thePresbyterians and Methodists. Catholics werefew and usually poor during the first half ofthe nineteenth century and did not buildsubstantial churches until the 1860s and1870s. Smaller groups of Congregationalistsand Baptists were concentrated in the latterhalf of the century at Thalaba and Eccleston¢respectively.

At first, denominational divisions were erasedby isolation. An itinerant preacher, ReverendG.A. Middleton ministered to all the settlersin 1825, selected a site for a burial groundat Tillimby, and also preached in a lath andplaster chapel or school hall there known asthe "Ranters Chapel", which later became aNational school. Another early chapel waslocated closer to the Duninald property, atthe intersection of the Paterson - Maitlandand Paterson - Morpeth roads. The church wasstill shown on the Duninald subdivision planof 1926.1

Anglican Churches

During the 1830s, the denominations diverged.At Dungog, an Anglican church, together with aschool, parsonage and burial ground werealready in existence in 1838 when the town waslaid out (see Fig. 24). The town was visitedby the Reverend C. Spencer of Raymond Terraceevery three or four months. in 1839,Paterson received its first rector, theReverend John Jennings Smith, a remarkablyactive and dedicated man who immediately setabout building churches at various pointsthroughout the district. Within a few yearsthere were "....stone churches at Paterson andCaergrwle, a stone school house at Paterson, aslab church at Lostock and a stone shedserving as a church at Gresford."3 St. Paul's

church at Paterson was preceded by an earlierbuilding on the original church land in ChurchStreet as shown on the 1833 survey. JenningsSmith apparently designed this simple gothicstyle stone church with its small belfry andpaid for the originally shingled roofhimself.4 The church was consecrated in 1845,the day after St. Mary's-on-Allyn at Caergrwlewas consecrated. St. Mary's was a similarbuilding, in a plain gothic style, designedand built in grey sandstone by WilliamBoydell, who had married Bishop Broughton'sdaughter (see Fig. 40). At the end of the1840s the foundation stone for anotherhandsome church was laid at Dungog on theoriginal site in Verge Street, and it wasopened and dedicated by Bishop Tyrell in 1858.Dungog had an incumbent, the Reverend WilliamToms, since 1850, and a brick cottage built in1849 at the northern end of town across MyallCreek was purchased for him (see Fig. 41).Jennings Smith also resided in a small four-roomed rectory, built before 1839, adjacent tohis church at the southern entrance to thetown.5

Jennings Smith at first held services in thegeneral store in Gresford once a fortnight, apractice which upset the Bishop, who orderedthat the counters and shelves be removed. Anearly slab and shingled church was erected inthe 1840s on the west side of the river (theoriginal settlement area, see Fig. 42).Similar churches were built at Clarence Townby 1840, at Vacy by Gilbert Cory before 1859(St. John's), at Lostock by c1850 (St. John's- weatherboard) and St. Pauls at Ecclestone.6

The boom period of the 1880s saw thereplacement of many of these timber churchesin the larger settlements with handsome brickbuildings set picturesquely by the rivers,their rich, red brickwork forming a finecontrast with the green countryside. AtGresford, St. Anne's church, designed by J.C.Luscombe of Muswellbrook, was erected on theeast side of the river in 1898, and at VacyMessrs W.M. and A.C. Lee designed a newapsidal St. John's with an asbestos tiled roofwhich was set on a prominent roadside site,and opened in 1887.7 Between Vacy andPaterson the settlers at Martins Creek heardservices in a barn until their early styleweatherboard St. James church was erected in1899. quarry there in 1908, the population increasedand the old church was replaced by a morestylish half-timbered church in 1828.8 InDungog, the second church was again replacedaround the turn of the century by a stilllarger brick church on its present day site inDowling Street (Christ Church) and the Churchhall, adjacent, was built in 1894. A smallbrick church was finally erected in ClarenceTown in 1906.9 The rectors at Dungog andPaterson were provided with new rectories inthe prosperity of the early twentieth century- at Paterson an impressive two storey mansionwas built on the site of the old in 1906, andat Dungog, the old cottage was replaced in1912.10

Presbyterian Churches

The establishment and development of thePresbyterian churches followed that of theAnglicans closely, and in much the samefashion. The earliest church was, again, atPaterson, where the first St. Anne's Kirkstood on the present site by 1833. A fulltime minister did not arrive in the HunterValley until 1831, when the church wasestablished at Maitland. With the greatinflux of Scottish settlers from 1837, theReverend William Ross was appointed ministerat Paterson, and St. Anne's Scots Kirk, anaustere, solid building was built c1840 on itsstriking site on the northwest side of thetown. Today it is the oldest Presbyterianchurch in Australia still in use.11

At Clarence Town land was surveyed for aPresbyterian school in 1847, and for thealready extant church and manse in MarshallStreet between Queen and King Streets in 1849.Surveys were made at the same time in Dungogin 1848 and 1851.12 A small brick church, St.Andrew's, was built in 1856 on the site of thepresent church hall, together with a manse,school, and a glebe of eight acres. Duringthe later nineteenth century, small satellitechurches were built at Bandon Grove, BigCreek, Monkerai and Fosterton, and ministerstravelled the circuit regularly.13

The churches at both Clarence Town and Dungogwere replaced shortly after the turn of the

century - Clarence Town in 1906 and Dungog in1905. Photographs of the opening of St.Andrews at Dungog show the old, modest chapeltogether with the much more impressive newbrick church with its tower/belfry on "...thesplendid corner site adjoining the old churchin the main street" (see Fig. 44). Theoriginal manse (now site of Baby HealthCentre) had been sold in 1889 and the presentone purchased from Mr. Wade.14

Wesleyan/Methodist Churches

The Wesleyan church appears in the Shireexclusively in the Williams Valley at ClarenceTown, Dungog and Bandon Grove, and all threewere originally built in the 1840s and early1850s. At Dungog a grant had been made tothe Wesleyan Methodists in 1841, although theallotments in Dowling Street near the cornerof Hooke Street were not officially surveyeduntil 1847. Land for a parsonage was laterset aside in MacKay Street, between Lord andDowling Streets.15 The chapel itself was notbuilt until 1853 and it was, like the earlyAnglican and Presbyterian churches, a plain,unadorned, squat, gothic-style structure (seeFig. 45). At Bandon Grove, higher up thevalley, a simple brick chapel had been erectedon an acre of land in 1849. SurveyorCarmichael marked out allotments for a church,school and parsonage in Clarence Town, inQueen Street between Grey and Rifle Streets inthe same year.16

Like other churches, the Dungog Wesleyanchapel was replaced by a larger church next toit in Dowling Street in 1910. A photographshows the two standing side by side - theearly gabled chapel with plain rendered wallsand restrained detailing, and the later,larger dark brick church with its array ofpilasters, bands of stucco, chequerboardbrickwork and leaded lancet windows (see Fig.45). The early modest beginnings of the 1850sare thus juxtaposed with the solid,respectable, prosperous community of the turnof the century. The chapel was laterdemolished to make way for a parsonage, and ahall was added in 1923.17

In her memories of "Growing up in Dungog",Daisy May Poppleton (nee Redman) described theMethodist Church as the sole means of social

interaction for the many Methodists in thedistrict in the late nineteenth century. As agirl she enjoyed talking to people afterservices, choir practice, and church-rundances, and she always had a strong aversionto alcohol as a result of her Methodistupbringing.18 Similarly, Clarence Smith wrotein 1963 of the church at Bandon Grove:

It should not be necessary to stress thepart played by this chapel in theconsolidation of this new centre, fornot only did it administer to thespiritual needs of the people, it wasalso the only social outlet, apart fromcricket, the people had.19

The Sunday School at Bandon Grove had 50pupils enrolled, a well stocked library, andheld a picnic every year that was enjoyed byyoung and old.

Roman Catholic Churches

The Catholics were not numerous or wealthy inthe Shire during the early settlement period,so the development pattern, althoughessentially similar to that of other churches,occurred slightly later in the century, withthe arrival of increasing numbers of smallsettlers, often Irish, after 1850. Surveyorslaid out allotments for burial grounds and aschool for Catholics at Dungog during the1840s, but not, it seems, for a church.Grants for a school house at Paterson were setaside in 1843 and for a burial ground atClarence Town in 1847.20 There may have beenchurches in the 1840s, but details aresketchy. Father Mahoney of East Maitland setup mass centres at various points, and atDungog the Courthouse was used for the purposein an expedient manner, until it wasdisallowed by the Police Magistrate in 1840.Thereafter a small chapel was built on JosephFitzgerald's Sunville property, and by 1857 achurch was built in Dungog on the corner ofVerge and Chapman Streets (see Fig. 15).21 AtGresford, a portion of the Clevedon propertywas utilized for a chapel, while a small brickschool house at Brookfield served as a masscentre from about 1850 for the many Irishsettlers and labourers there. The Catholicsprobably also had an early church at ClarenceTown.22

From the 1860s onwards, Catholics began to

erect more substantial churches, matchingthose of the other denominations. At ClarenceTown, St. Patrick's was built on a hillside inRifle Street about 1863, and at Dungog, St.Mary's was drawn, like other churches, to asite in Dowling Street (corner Brown Street)and was built in 1868, together with ahandsome presbytery.23 A photograph of thesebuildings (now demolished) show the buttressedbrick church with a shingled roof and elegantcarved valances to the gable. The presbyterywas also an elegant building of symmetricaldesign, with a hipped roof and encirclingbellcast verandah set on timber pillars (seeFig. 46). At East Gresford, St. Helen's wasbuilt of brick and shingles to a simple designin 1867.24

Similar simple, unpretentious churches wereerected at Brookfield, (St. Killain's) and atPaterson in 1884 (St. Columba's). Thesechurches have both survived, but in bothDungog and Clarence Town the churches wereagain superseded by more up-to-date buildings.The new St. Patricks in Rifle Street waserected in 1892, while in Dungog the churchmoved to its third site in Brown Street in1933, with a presbytery added in 1956. Theold buildings were demolished to make way fora telephone exchange.25

Two convents were also established in theShire - one at Brookfield in 1839, which wasused as a school until a separate building waserected in 1892; and similarly, one atGresford built in 1892 served as a schooluntil 1911.26

Smaller denominations tended to be morelocalized. The Baptists congregated atThalaba, from 1869, with Mr. Isaac Brewer astheir pastor. A timber building, nicknamedthe "Baptist Cathedral", served as aschoolroom and church until a church was builtin 1881 and replaced in 1913. The Baptistchurch at Dungog opened in 1917 and was anoutstation of Thalaba. There are also reportsof an early Baptist Church in King Street atClarence Town. 27

centre at Ecclestone during the 1880s and achurch and manse were erected there.Gresford's Congregational church, built in1903 for twelve pounds was an outstation ofthe Eccleston circuit.2°

The Salvation Army made intermittentappearances at Dungog during the latenineteenth and early twentieth centuries.They first arrived in 1836, broke off for aperiod between 1901 and 1912, and closed downcompletely in 1940 until their return in1984.29

2 Education and Schools

The education of the Shire's children and theestablishment of schools mirrored the samegeneral pattern as that of churches. The taskwas first taken on by private individuals andchurches, and schools were initiallyestablished on estates and in the embryonictowns. Classes were held in rough, slabwalled huts with sheet-bark roofs and, in thecase of the smaller villages, these conditionsprevailed well into the late nineteenthcentury. National schools were set up frommid-century onwards, and in the larger townssolid school and residence buildings wereeventually built according to the style of theperiod. These buildings invariably laggedbehind the demand for space, and extraclassrooms were usually hurriedly tacked on atthe side or rear.

In many of the smaller villages, the schools,together with the churches, played animportant role in defining the settlement anddrawing people together. The schools werekept open by the distance separating localsettlers' children from larger towns.Children had to travel considerable distanceson foot or horseback to attend in any case.Daisy May Poppleton remembered that she andher sisters walked miles to school barefoot,so as not to wear out their shoes.30 Thedairy farmers' children crossing a river onhorseback in Fig. 47 are also shoeless. Amotley group of children, some solemn-faced,others mischievous in spite of the camera,pose with their dark-suited and stern-facedteacher in front of the typical weatherboardschool at Underbank in the early twenties

(Fig. 48). Conditions for teachers at most ofthe smaller places were usually appalling andmost only stayed a year or two. A highturnover of teachers was thus another featureof schooling in the Shire during thenineteenth and early twentieth century.

Early Schools

Some of the first schools were set up by thelarge landowners for the children on theirestates. Gilbert Cory established a school onhis Vacy estate by about 1850, or probablyearlier, on a site between the Halfway HouseInn and the ford at Vacy.31 William Lowehired a tutor for an early school for thechildren of his employees at his DeptfordShipyards between 1834 and 1847, one of theearliest schools in the Shire. Early schoolsare also recorded at Tillimby and Trevallyn(Campsie) and both later became Nationalschools. 3z

During the late 1830s and 1840s numerousdenominational schools were established in thetowns. Land was marked out for Catholicschools in Paterson in 1843 (corner High andChurch Streets), for the Wesleyans in Dungogin 1847, and Clarence Town (1849), and for thePresbyterians in Dungog (1839 and 1843) andClarence Town (1847). At Paterson thePresbyterian minister had advertised for ateacher who could "speak and teach Gaelicgrammatically" as early as 1839. In the sameyear the Reverend John Jennings Smith setabout replacing an old slab school with a neatstone building which stood on the corner ofKing and Duke Streets until it was replaced bythe C.B.C. Bank in 1902 (see Fig. 49). ACatholic school was conducted at Brookfield ina brick building from about the 1850s, and theBaptists had their wooden school house atThalaba.33

There are some reports of private individualswho also ran schools. At Allynbrook a smallprivate school was opened in about 1839, by ateacher who also ran a part-time school atHalton. John Bush ran a school in Gresfordprior to 1867, and Henry Fowler conducted oneat Lostock.34

In many cases small private and denominationalschools were forerunners of the National

schools established after 1848. Their closureoften forced the opening of the latter,although occasionally the two existed side byside. A Catholic school was run at ClarenceTown between the mid 1860s and 1875. AtBrookfield the Catholics continued to run theonly school until 1957, and a convent schoolexisted at Gresford between 1898 and 1911.35

The National Schools

The first state-run school was established atClarence Town in 1849, when there were over200 children in the town. Land on the cornerof Rifle and Queen Streets was acquired, and abuilding possibly hired from Mr. Lowe in theinterim was replaced when the school buildingwas opened in 1851. The arrival of JamesGardiner as the school's second teacher inthat year marked the beginning of the school's"golden age". Gardiner built up the standardsand curriculum and the school earned areputation as the equal of an Englishelementary school. When Gardiner left,however, this reputation was quickly lost.During the mid-60s to 1875 there wasconsiderable competition and conflict betweenthe public and Catholic schools until thelatter was forced to close down in 1875because of the withdrawal of state aid. Bythis time the public school buildings werebeyond repair and a new school and residencewere erected on the present site in 1876-77.With the swelling of population during the1880s, the classroom sizes were doubled in1883 and the school was repaired and providedwith new desks in 1906.36

In Dungog the Presbyterians had established aschool in Chapman Street during the 1840s, butthis was, at the church's request, convertedto a National school in 1 851 , and its teacherJoseph Ross was appointed by the state toteach the 48 pupils. By 1863 the earlybuildings, which were probably timber, haddeteriorated and the school was temporarilymoved to the Wesleyan chapel in DowlingStreet, while a new building was erected, andopened in 1865. It was adjacent to thePresbyterian church in Chapman Street, andopposite the old site. By 1888 there was astaff of three, and classrooms had been addedin 1881 and 1887. By 1889 Dungog was aSuperior Public School and in 1893 a new

residence was built, followed by a new four-roomed brick school in 1910. The school hadan enrolment of 216 by 1900 and the number ofchildren continued to increase with thearrival of increasing numbers of dairyfarmers. Clarence Smith wrote that duringthis period the school had a very goodreputation for standards and could keep thechildren longer, so that several parents fromthe outlying villages of Bandon Grove,Bendolba, Alison, Thalaba and Dingadee senttheir children on foot, on horseback or in asulky to school at Dungog. Each Monday theteacher collected 3d from every child, a sumwhich "hurt at that period". Daisy MayPoppleton remembered her frustration at beingtaken out of Dungog school to help her motherand sisters on their farm. This does notappear unusual, particularly for girls, andwas probably also true of the dairy farmerswhose large families were essential in running

Oomabah the farms. For wealthier parents, a privateDungog: boarding school for boys was run in theSignificant gothic-style Oomabahbah during the earlyBuilding twentieth century.

Educational facilities expanded considerablyduring the 1860s with schools opened at BandonGrove (1862), Ecclestone (1867), Gresford(1868), Vacy (1868) and Allynbrook (1869).The existence of schools at these pointsunderlines their relatively significantstatus. All had been preceded by private ordenominational schools and most began infairly primitive conditions.

At Bandon Grove an early school wasestablished on W.T. Foster's Mulconda estatein 1850, and accordingly named MulcondaSchool. It had an average attendance offorty, but closed in 1858. Three years latera slab school comprising a residence andclassroom was erected in the village (see Fig.50) and a National school was opened in 1862.A program of improvements, including pig-prooffencing, a kitchen and a partition to createthe teacher's bedroom was underway, but theaccommodation was still mean and leaky, andteachers arrived and departed every year orso. Attendances fluctuated wildly with thewaves of new settlers and the floods, whilethe closure of W.A. Smith's tobacco factory in1875 left only 15 children. At the same timethe school was vying with the Upper BendolbaChurch of England Denominational school for

Bandon Grove survival. The Bandon Grove school eventuallyPublic School: triumphed with the erection of a school room,Significant small classroom and a four-roomed teacher'sBuilding residence under the same roof in 1881.

Enrolments jumped between 1876 and 1881 from34 to 59, and this was partly a result of thefootbridges erected over the Williams andChichester Rivers in 1879. By 1882 there were71 students, but this fell to 60 in 1900 and37 in 1904. Subsequently, repairs were madeto the building in 1920, the windows wereenlarged in 1928, and a Parents and CitizensAssociation was formed in the 1930s.38

The school at Eccleston was marked by frequentclosures during its history. The Anglicanchurch school which preceded the Nationalschool was located on Hugh Massie's land andclosed in 1864. The timber three-roomedschool with its shingled roof and windowsclosed in with calico, was repaired and openedbriefly as a National school in 1867 withabout 20 students. Actual attendances sank toonly 12 because of an outbreak of typhus in1868 and the school closed at the end of theyear. It was not reopened until 1875, againin the old building, but the teacher leftafter only twelve months and was not replaceduntil 1878. Enrolments rose in 1879 and theschool was declared a Public School, with ateacher, Mrs. Emily Hill, who served for thenext 25 years. The old buildings were finallyreplaced in 1885 on the present site. Theschool closed again briefly in 1911, reopenedin 1912 on a trial basis, and stayed openuntil another brief closure in 1933. By 1938there were several classes and some children

Eccleston of 15. The old 1885 building was consideredPublic School: unstable in 1943, and the following year aSignificant school building was brought up from TrevallynBuilding (Campsie) and attached to the tank and chimney

of the old school. This building was still inuse in 1967.39

At Gresford, the population, and thusenrolments, were more stable. The school wasopened in about 1868, and its headmaster JohnBush had run the earlier private school there.

Gresford A new brick building was opened in 1 882 at thePublic School: "Crossroads" at Gresford. By 1927 maps showedSignificant the township simply as "Gresford School". (SeeBuilding Fig. 29). The buildings are still in use

today.40

The Vacy State school was also opened in 1868,

on a site close to the original ford. Itslocal Public School Board included GilbertCory who had established the first smallschool on the site, G.S. Brown and G.J.Frankland. At a later stage the school wasmoved further south onto the main road at itspresent site (see Fig. 31).41

The school at Allybrook gained Provisionalstatus in 1869, and was known until 1904 asthe Caergrwle or Caergurle school. Up untilthen it had been a private school sponsored byWilliam Boydell, who provided a simple hut setnear a cliff face overlooking the Allyn River.A contemporary Schools Inspector, Dwyer, foundthe area "populous, but the inhabitantsgenerally poor, ignorant and notoriouslydilatory as regards the education of theirchildren". A school was neverthelessestablished in the slab and bark hut with itstwo rooms and verandah, an earthen floorsubject to damp and glass-less windows. Oneroom was the classroom, while the other, withits two tiny skillions, served as theteacher's residence. Although Dwyerrecommended that this building be used onlytemporarily, it continued to serve right upuntil 1881.

Good teachers were generally deterred by theseconditions. Some teachers boarded elsewhere,and one preferred to teach the childrenoutside under a tree rather than in thecrowded, dark, stuffy room. The building was

one who refused to take up the post when shesaw the residence, one who was rathereccentric and too unorthodox for the localcommunity, one who continually took leave andhad a "propensity for lying", and an alcoholicwho was, nevertheless a "...conscientious andenergetic man". The typically high turnoverof teachers at this isolated school continuedright up to the 1950s. The childrenthemselves were often kept out of school tohelp on farms, by epidemics or by heavy rainsor floods which immediately cut them off. Awooden weathershed was added in 1892, alongwith a bathroom and another bedroom for theteacher. With the arrival of Terence Rogersin 1901 standards improved and the enrolmentincreased to over 60. The school was extended

again in 1902. By 1914 the enrolment droppedto 47 and again in 1955 to 24 and in 1967 to17. A Parents and Citizens Association wasformed in 1934 and made many practicalcontributions to the school.42

The establishment of a Public School atPaterson in 1875 was surprisingly late,considering the growth and prosperity of thetown. Its children had apparently beenadequately educated by the severaldenominational schools (Anglican, Presbyterianand Roman Catholic) and also by the smallNational school established for a short timeon the Tillimby estate. Another school wasrun at one stage (c1860s, 1870s) in thebuilding now known as Noumea, in PrinceStreet, in addition to two boarding schoolsrun by Miss Hasken and Mr. Stone repectivelyfrom the 1850s.43

It was the closure of the Anglican churchschool in 1874 which finally prompted theestablishment of the Paterson Public School.The site had been purchased in 1865, and theOddfellows Hall was used for the studentsuntil the first school was opened in 1875. Bythe end of the year, enrolments had risen from30 to 81 and this building was already

Fig. 51). In the first decade of thetwentieth century, the construction of therailway line cut the playground in half andrequired the demolition of the headmaster'sresidence. A new site for the residence waspurchased in 1908, the school had a newclassroom in 1909, and the 92 children weretaught in the Oddfellows Hall while blastingfor the railway was underway. They returnedto the school after works were complete andthe school remained there until the newcomplex was opened in 1971.44

The Paterson school was supplemented when theState opened a school at Martins Creek nearbyin 1892. Like all the other schools, its

Martins Creek forerunner had been a small private school inPublic School: a slab hut on the Eskart property nearSignificant Tumbledown Creek. Some of the local childrenBuilding had walked seven miles to attend the school at

Paterson. The first public school was

originally sited about 1 mile east of thepresent site in a weatherboard structure closeto the road. After the opening of the quarryhad drawn many families to Martins Creek, thisbuilding was replaced by another timberbuilding in 1913, which was moved to thepresent site, and had an additional roomattached in 1923.45

The schools described above are representativeof many more which were short-lived or lesswell-attended, but which nevertheless clearlymarked the existence and growth ofcommunities. A public school at Bendolbawhich opened in 1855 was not well-supportedand closed, to be replaced by the UpperBendolba Church of England school on a sitenear the junction of the roads to Bandon Groveand Underbank. The latter was closed whenbridges made the school at Bandon Groveaccessible. Another State school was openedat some time later at Bendolba but againclosed in 1919.46

The pattern is typical of the remarkablynumerous small schools. By the turn of thecentury there were schools at almost everysmall settlement, including Carabolla,Strathlisla, Lostock, Mt. Rivers, Coulston,Fisher's Hill, Upper Allyn, Halton,Bingleburra, Lewinsbrook, Campsie (Trevallyn),Chichester, Welshman's Creek and Underbank.Of these, the only schools along the PatersonRiver by 1979 were Mt. Rivers, Gresford andEccleston. A school for the miners' manychildren at Wangat was opened, but closed whenthe gold failed and the town declined. Mostof the small schools were held in the slabbuildings of the type described andillustrated, and the period of service for themost dedicated teachers was only two or threeyears. 47

3. Community Organisations and Activities

The men who took up land along the Patersonduring the Shire's earliest settlement periodhad much in common and faced the samedifficulties. They were all English or Welsh,wealthy and well-educated. They had all takenup large estates and faced the monumental taskof converting the wild lands to fields andpastures. They were unified by the commonthreats of convict revolt, bushrangers, and

the reprisals of the blacks they haddispossessed. The bonds of friendship wereparticularly strong between the men such asJames P. Webber of Tocal, Charles Boydell ofCamyrallyn, Alexander Park of Lewinsbrook,George Townsend of Trevallyn and Edward Coryof Gostwyck.48

The earliest formal expression of their commoninterests was the Farmers's Club, establishedin 1827. The men met at Halliers Hotel atPaterson Plains to discuss issues concerningtheir crops and stock. It was a period ofenergetic experimentation with many differentcrops, so the exchange of information andideas was lively. At an early stage it wasplanned to offer prizes as an incentive toproduce high quality tobacco, cheese, beer,vines and hops. An agricultural fair was alsoplanned for Paterson Plains in 1828, but anotice from the committee announced that aGeneral Sale would be held there instead inJanuary 1829.49

Paterson was also the centre for the Shire'searliest Lodge organization. The ManchesterUnited Order of Oddfellows first met at thePaterson Hotel in 1846, their first hall waserected in the following year. At this stageit was found necessary to stipulate that "Anyperson having been a convict..... must be sixmonths free before he can be a member of thesociety". The Lodge built a new hall in 1865,which was also used as a School of Arts until1883.50 In Dungog the Lodge was opened in1874 and in 1892 a foundation stone was laidfor a new hall, with splendid pomp andceremony. The five hundred people whoattended marched in a procession with a band,listened to speeches, played sport in theafternoon and feasted at a banquet thatevening. When the hall was opened thefollowing year, the 92 members on the rollcongratulated themselves with yet anotherbanquet at the Settlers Arms, where manytoasts were made, including one to "The LandWe Live In".51

The opening ceremonies of bridges, buildingsand the railway, vice regal visits and, later,centenaries were thus invariably considered asgrand and exciting events, and opportunitiesfor vigorous celebrations, speeches aboutprogress, and great communal enjoyment.During his visit to Dungog in 1893, the

Governor General Lord Jersey made speeches andpresentations, laid a foundation stone for thehospital, opened a flower show, planted trees,inspected the cornflour mill and attended aball and banquet in his honour in the evening."Everything went off to perfection" commentedthe Dungog Chronicle wryly "except the meatsandwiches were tainted and there was adispute about the payment for the catering".52

Gostwyck When the Gostwyck bridge was opened in 1878,Bridge: hundreds of people converged on the site toIndustrial listen to speeches, watch their children atArchaeology the morning tea party, played sports and then

attended a ball to celebrate their new bridgethat evening. All the ceremonies celebratedoptimism and civic pride in the communities.The Chronicle encapsulated this spirit in its1893 "New Years Greeting", which made atriumphant list of Dungog's prospects, andconcluded:

We have on all hands pronouncedindications that Dungog is fastdeveloping into a large wealthy andimportant centre, with a thrifty andcontented population.53

A cautionary, touchwood clause was pinned atthe end: "Let us trust that this crude picturewe have drawn is not overly optimistic".

While the men were busily attending Lodgemeetings, the women became involved in raisingfunds and collecting donations for Dungog'sCottage Hospital. The Hospital's board wasexclusively male, but when the Mayoress MrsHook convened a meeting "for the purpose ofdevising ways and means for advancing theinterest of the hospital" it was attended onlyby women - thirty in all, both married andunmarried, and generally from the districts'well-known, long established families. In theVictorian spirit of womanly good deeds, theyset energetically about fundraising for thetwo-roomed hospital (see Fig. 52) throughsocial functions, sports and activities.These included concerts, euchre parties,plays, balls, linen teas, horse racing,cricket and football matches. Money was alsocollected through clubs such as the Girls'Patriotic Club, the Booral Knitting Club, theBendolba Tennis Club and the Bandon GroveGirls Guild, and through an annual HospitalSaturday when money was collected in all thesettlements by the unmarried women. Donationsof food, flowers, linen and books were alsowelcomed.54

From 1911 the hospital treated about 200patients each year and until 1914, roughlytwo-thirds of those were men. In that year itacquired a cot, a "new operating table of thelatest design" and a new table for the morgue.In 1915 the former North West Railwaypaymaster's office was acquired, and the landin front of the hospital was later purchasedand donated to preserve the hospital's vistaover the town. Further additions were made in1914 when tenders for a new brick operatingtheatre and remodelled isolation ward wereaccepted. A new ambulance was described as"fine, roomy (and) convenient with a stretcheron a slide, seat, water bottle and generalambulance fittings inside". In 1918 thehospital treated over 330 patients and, afterthe resignation of three nurses, a room wasadded where night duty staff could sleepundisturbed. X-ray apparatus was presented bythe Dungog Dramatic Club in 1920. During anepidemic of diptheria in the early 1930s,sixty of the patients were housed in tents inthe grounds.55

Another community institution which generateda good deal of civic pride in many towns wasthe School of Arts. They were a typicalfeature of New South Wales country towns andwere important in providing venues fornumerous community and social activities. Theearliest School of Arts was established atPaterson in 1868 and it was held in both theOddfellows Hall and the old Anglicanschoolhouse until a hall was built in 1883.John Tucker remembered that rather culturedoccasions were held there during the latternineteenth century, including debating,lectures, and literary and musical evenings.It also had a library and sponsored theDramatic Club. He was contemptuous of its1930's use for the less lofty purposes ofbilliards, cards and dancing. The buildingwas replaced in 1935 by a new hall in DukeStreet. It was used for movies and billiardsduring the 1950s and continues to be animportant community venue today.56

At Gresford the School of Arts was a brickbuilding with a supper room, billiards roomand a library, but later was converted to aparish hall. A new hall was built in 1930 atEast Gresford. At Vacy a School of Arts stoodnext to St. John's Church by the time theestate was subdivided in 1927 (see Fig. 31).

On the Williams River the School of Arts atClarence Town had been established by 1879 ina weatherboard building opposite the schoolplayground. A new hall, with library, cardroom and billiards room was built on thecorner of Grey and Prince Streets in 1914 andbecame the social centre for the town. It wastransformed into the Empire Theatre during the1940s.57

A School of Arts was erected relatively lateat Bandon Grove. Subsidized by the EducationDepartment, the building went up in 1933, withhalf used for reading and the other half forgames . The remaining debt was paid off byholding dances, flower shows and balls.58

Dungog had by far the most impressive andelaborate School of Arts. It was firstestablished in 1880 in Dowling Street but wasdestroyed by fire from an adjoining bakehouse.When Harold MacKenzie inspected the newbuilding during its construction in 1898, hewas inspired to write a complete architecturaldescription of the building from thefoundations up. It was designed by a localarchitect C. Button, and had fine fittings,meeting rooms, a library and reading room forchess and draughts and a balconette forspeechmaking. He concluded that such abuilding was only fitting for this wealthy andprogressive town.59

Agricultural associations were also formed andreformed over the nineteenth century, althoughdetails are scarce. A Farmers Union metregularly at Dungog and the Williams RiverAgricultural and Horticultural Associationheld the first Dungog Show in 1886. The Showbecame an exciting annual event, and childrenin particular looked forward to it all year.At Gresford, the Gresford and DistrictAgricultural Society was formed in 1927.60The 1920s also saw the formation of various"Leagues" in the interest of communityprogress and service. Gresford had a "PublicParks and Improvement League" and in Dungogthe "Barrington Tops League" promoted theBarrington Tops as a future great resort,equal to the Blue Mountains in beauty,accessibility and, they hoped, popularity.61

When war broke out in 1914 enlistment officeswere flooded with volunteers. In hisautobiography, Lloyd Rees remembered that

those who didn't in his small town inQueensland faced severe public contempt. Hisbrother Vyvyan was one of those who rushed toenlist, and his twin obsessions to "hang theKaiser" and "the fear that it would be allover before he got there" were shared by manyof the young men who went to the war.62 DaisyMay Poppleton recounts that at Dungog, as inmost other country towns:

....men still in civilian clothes wouldmarch into Dungog from neighbouringtowns and villages on their way down toSydney and the war. There was greatexcitement when they arrived and a fewmore young men, infected by the generalenthusiasm, would fall in with them.63

The new soldiers sometimes spent an impatientnight or two at Dungog, billeted at theshowground before boarding their trains. Wehave actual images of the recruits of WorldWar 1. In one photograph the "men still incivilian clothes" are lined up excitedlybeside a makeshift tent against a forest ofwhite ringbarked trees (see Fig. 53). Anothershows a long, crowded procession of men indark clothes marching along the dirt roadthrough hills stuck with the same dead trees,"on their way to Sydney and the war". AtDungog, crowds farewelled them at the railwaystation, and they stood stiffly to attentionin new uniforms, faces taut with expectation,beside the town dignitaries and the flag,while small children peered into the camera oneither side (see Fig. 54). Neither soldiersnor the civilians who stayed home could havehad any idea of what lay ahead, or of thetwisted irony of their naive "fear of missingout on the adventure". Dungog Shire'scommunities, like most others, contributed tothe war effort by Red Cross activities, fundraising, knitting garments, forming patrioticclubs and supporting each other during thelong wait for the boys to come home.64

4 Leisure: Sport, Recreation andEntertainment

Leisure time was scarce for the first wave ofsettlers to the Paterson and Williams Rivers,who faced the task of carving out their farmsand estates and building their first homes.Social interaction took place in these homes,which extended hospitality to friends and

travellers, until the first inns and wineshops were built in the 1830s. Drinking hadcertainly been a popular pastime with theearly cedar getters, as Alexander Harris'colourful account in Settlers and Convictsrecalled.65 The later inns were meetingcentres for clubs and associations, places fortheir banquets and, in the case of thePatersons Arms in the 1840s, venues for heatedand violent political arguments.66 Later,more genteel gathering-points were provided bythe School of Arts buildings.

The earliest sports included cricket andhorseracing. Cricket was particularly populararound the Gresford district where a cricketground was established in front of Glennie'sOrindinna homestead, northwest of Gresford.Glennie was a keen cricket player himself.Later in the century numerous teams wereformed, which played each other and teams fromSydney. For the strongly Methodist populationaround Bandon Grove, cricket and church werethe only social outlets. Around the turn ofthe century Chichester and Underbank had acombined team which posed for a photographerwith bats, balls and wickets (see Fig.55).67Football was played in winter, but there is noevidence that it approached the popularity ofcricket. John Tucker recollected that theShire's remaining aborigines were also drawnto sporting events , where they " ..stagedcorroborees and gave wonderful performancesthrowing different kinds of boomerangs andspears". They had also danced and sung at theopening of the Gostwyck Bridge, where "A largecrowd encircled them, several persons in itnever having seen a native dance or heard anative song".68

The first horse races were held at ClarenceTown (1844), Dungog (1848) and Paterson(1849). These were great social occasions,reflecting the increased population which nowhad more time to enjoy itself. After theracecourse was built at Dungog in 1851, racecarnivals were held over several days, and 1,2, and 2'-z mile races were run. Publicansconstructed booths of canvas and bushes andemployed a fiddler for the crowds, and wholebullocks were roasted to feed them. TheDungog Jockey Club was formed and annual racesheld thereafter. The racecourse was adjacentto C.L. Brown's Cairnsmore estate, and is nowthe site of Dungog High School.69 At Paterson

a racecourse was built on the flats nearWebber's Creek, and three-day carnivals drewpeople from far and wide to enjoy the races,booths, stalls, side shows, music and dancing.Dancing itself was a popular pastime, anddances were held in hotels equipped withballrooms or large upper verandahs, in halls,sheds and private homes.70

Towards the end of the nineteenth century manyrecreational activities seemed to lose some ofthis early exhuberance. Women's activitiestended increasingly towards fundraising,charities and worthy causes. For men, pigeonshooting was a popular sport, and groups wereguided in the wild New Jerusalem area (nowChichester State Forest) by an aboriginalnicknamed Brandy, who was the last of thearea's Gringhi tribe. Much to the shooters'disapointment Brandy became more interested inleading bands of eager fossickers about thebush in their fruitless search for gold. By1892 there was a rifle club at Dungog, and arifle range was established on an oldaboriginal camp at "Burnt Gully". Golf wasplayed at the Gresford showground, and tennisbecame popular for both men and women, withclubs set up in the early twentieth century.71

By the 1880s there were also Debating Clubs inDungog and Paterson, and a Dramatic Society inDungog by 1920. The women who raised fundsfor churches and hospitals made use of theseorganizations, and also held tea meetings,quadrille parties, concerts, euchre partiesand linen teas in the early twentieth century.Energetic young women like Daisy May Redmanformed the Wattle Club which raised money forcharity, held concerts in Dungog's VictorianHall (see Fig. 28) and trekked along dark andtreacherous roads in an old bus to entertainthe dam workers up at Wangat.72

Both men and women attended balls and banquetsheld annually and occasionally, for everyconceivable reason. In Allynbrook, the annualgrape picking season, when the communitytraditionally banded together for theharvesting, culminated in a Gala GrapePickers' Ball, an event looked forward to allyear. The buggies and carriages of thewealthy also travelled to the various grandhouses for evenings of singing and dancing.73Recreational activities involving familiesincluded sporting events, picnics

(particularly those of the schools and Sundayschools), and the annual agricultural shows atthe various towns. For the people of MartinsCreek, the weir built by Cory for his Gostwyckmill in 1836 became a pleasant gathering placefor picnics, parties, sport and games. AtGresford people could enjoy the Victoriagardens, a cedar grove behind the Victoria(now Beatty's) Inn, where a band played onweekdays and holidays.74 Another annual eventapparently peculiar to the Shire was "GoingDown Day", when every person in the Williamsvalley boarded steamers at Clarence Town to godown to Newcastle for the day. When they gotthere, families headed for the beach, whilethe young, single men went off to visit mostof Newcastle's pubs. The practice is thoughtto have begun in the 1870s and finally diedout in the 1940s.75

For those who could afford it, motor touringbecame popular during the 1920s. In 1924 thefirst cars crossed the Barrington Tops and aphotographer recorded this event (see Fig.70). Six years later Barrington House wasopened for visitors to the Shire. It wasrather spartan, with no radio, newspapers, orliquor allowed, and never matched the glamourand popularity of the Blue Mountains resort.76

By the 1950s movies were shown in Paterson,Clarence Town and Dungog. At Paterson theywere shown in the School of Arts, while atClarence Town the School of Arts became the

James Theatre Empire Theatre. Dungog's James Theatre was aDungog: simple weatherboard hall which at some stageSignificant acquired a stuccoed Spanish Mission facade inBuilding a dutiful attempt to echo the exotic,

ephemeral style of the big city theatres. By1953 movies were held there three times aweek. In the same year, St. Andrew'sPresbyterian Church arranged one of its "grandconcerts" there. The program boasted finesingers who sang many old Scottish ballads,songs which reached back over a century to theScots who had arrived early and became sofirmly entrenched in Dungog's community.77
