Welcome to the June edition of the Sherwood Newsletter. As I type this intro, I am amazed that

the warm spell in May has dissolved and it is back to wet and cool conditions outside.... Not what I anticipated, but at least the frosts have fi nished. We had two competitions last month and the lucky winners are announced in the inside pages. Well done to the winners and thanks to all the entrants - who all got the right answers. This months big headache is the impending road closure between Blidworth and Rainworth. We have put more details of diversion routes and maps for you below. I think many travellers who don’t live locally will not be pleased to encounter the complete closure of the B6020 through the main street in Blidworth and I expect the A614 and A60 to be quite busy as a result of diversions. The road has needed repair for a long time and it will hopefully be better once it is completed. The Roadworks will have a day off on the Sunday 22nd June as there is a 6-a-side cricket tournament at Blidworth WelfareWe hope you enjoy the content of the newsletter - let us know if you don’t! Please as always support the local advertisers when you need a service, as they pay for the design and printing of this valuable local community newsletter.

Mark Spencer MPSecretary of State for Health Jeremy Hunt visits SherwoodIt was great to have Jeremy Hunt, the Secretary of State for Health, here to visit Pathfi nders Specialist and Complex Care Centre in Ollerton. Pathfi nders is a facility that provides day care and respite facilities for those aged 18-65 with specialist or complex needs. It is a not for profi t organisation which works with Social Services and the NHS. The staff at Pathfi nders very kindly showed Mr Hunt and me around the facility and I know that he was very impressed with the way that Pathfi nders was working with the NHS to deliver such exceptional care in a professional way. The Government has

increased the amount of money spent within the NHS, since the election. I am keen to make sure that we continue to push to swap clip boards for stethoscopes, reducing the number of mangers and increasing the number of clinicians and carers.During the tour, it was great to drop in on a group of staff taking part in training. The centre employs 175 mostly full time staff from within a 5 mile radius. All staff have a developmental and supervision programme and the home spends on average 10% of its payroll on training, development and learning support. It was great to see a local employer take on and invest in local people, often young people. I am proud to have such an excellent facility in our area caring for those people in our community that need the help the most and I can’t thank the staff at Pathfi nders enough for so kindly accommodating

Brighter Futures Education Feature by Jill BatorTop Tips for Time ManagementWith GCSE and A Level examinations season here, one of the most crucial parts of studying and preparing for examinations is to help our children manage their time appropriately. This isn’t always easy in a world of mobile communications, social networking and other distractions in the summer such as (hopefully) good weather and sporting events on the television. There are 1,440 minutes in a day which should give our children plenty of time to study in but with so many “time bandits” encroaching on ours and their time below are some top tips with help with time management:• Switch off mobile phones when studying. This also provides

something to look forward after an hour or two of studying to see who has been in contact and what is happening in the world.

• Encourage children to get a good night’s sleep. It can be really diffi culty to concentrate when tired and learning is therefore disrupted.

• Allocate a set time of the day for studying and stick to this.• Let others know not to contact or disturb your children when

they are studying.• Work out with your child how long they can concentrate

before needing a break. A suggestion is 30 minutes study followed by a 10 minute break.

• Encourage your child to use a record book or diary. Creating a calendar or programme of study will clearly identify the times for work and the times for fun.

• Find out the best time of day for learning for your child and help them plan their study calendar around this.

Remember, we are all individuals and learn in different ways so our children may not fi nd the study techniques you used useful. Talk to your child and fi nd out what works for them and then help them allocate time for study.www.brighterfutureseducation.co.uk

A Change of Leadership for Blidworth Oaks Primary SchoolThis year, Blidworth Oaks Primary has welcomed a new Head Teacher, Mr Shaun Walker. Everyone involved with the school has been working hard to create a community school that challenges and motivates all of its children in the classroom and out of it. The school has developed a set of values that we teach the children to live in everything they do. They are:• Aspiration• Inspiration• Integrity• Responsibility• Resilience• Inclusion• Respect

Our children have really taken on board these values and every week teachers nominate a child for an ‘Integrity’ award; for children who have shown good use of the values in school and the community. We recently gave some community ‘value points’ to local shop owners to give to our children who showed our values whilst out in Blidworth. This year has seen a new record for attendance at Blidworth Oaks! The children who are the top attendees each term are invited to ‘Attendance Camp’. This is a fantastic reward where the children are invited to camp at school for the night with a team of teachers. We have a campfi re, bed time stories and

breakfast together the next morning. The school also provides between 2-4 after school clubs, predominantly sport based, every night of the week. We have also seen some great sporting victories for our Football, Rugby and Netball teams.New to the school grounds, we now have a Poly Tunnel in our allotment area which is brilliant for outdoor learning. The Poly Tunnel has been so successful in harvesting some brilliant vegetable plants that we well to the public or to the school kitchen to use in school dinners! This year we have struck up a partnership with a local charity called ‘Sporting HEARTS’ who have been kindly arranging several free trips for our children and their parents to go and watch Nott’s County Football Club. They have also started using the school premises for a ‘Saturday Sports Club’ which provides coaching in a number of different sports. This year has seen a very exciting addition to our terml planner, the ‘Big Family Breakfast’, where all parents, carers and families of our pupils join us in the hall for breakfast all together as a community. It is a lovely atmosphere and our staff and families enjoy spending time together. So as you can see Blidworth Oaks takes pride in being part of the Blidworth Community. If you would like more information or would like to arrange a visit, then please feel free to contact us on 01623 792348.

Reluctant Gardener for JuneJune is a great time to plant annuals, perennials and all trees and shrubs! Plants and trees that provide colour in the month of June include Azaleas, Hydrangeas, Rhododendrons, Spireas, Butterfl y Bush, Mock Orange and Golden Rain Tree. Be on the lookout for these pests: Bagworms, Borers, Gypsy Moths, Lacebugs, Scale insects, Spider Mites, Caterpillars and slugs, especially after heavy rain. It’s a great time to plant strawberries, raspberries, blueberries and blackberries. Time to stake tomatoes and spray them if necessary to prevent disease problems. After your vegetable garden is well established, June is the time to apply a fungicide to the lawn to control turf diseases such as brown patch, dollar spot and others. Also look out for Chafer beetles.

Keep the lawn trimmed as long grass weakens the roots. You can move houseplants outside to the deck or patio and enjoy them outdoors for the summer. It is best to gradually introduce them to more direct sunlight to prevent the leaves from being burned. Feed houseplants with a good quality indoor plant food such If needed, re-pot root bound houseplants to a larger pot.

Happy Gardening, Andy

Provado Lawn Grub Killer has now been BANNED!

Owing to the level of concern across Europe about the collapse of bee populations, the European Commission has restricted the use of pesticides which have been linked to the decline in bee populations.

It is only Provado Lawn Grub Killer that has been banned because it was a liquid product which was available to the public. When Provado was applied on to lawns, there was a danger it could drift on to adjacent pollinating plants if not applied carefully. As a result bees could be put at risk. The treatment we use is a professional insecticide and is a granular product, only available to professional users, which is much easier to target on to the lawn area only, and is far less likely to drift than a liquid product.

Merit Turf is a professional-grade product and is not available to the general public. Our employees hold the Certicates of Competence in the Safe Handling of Pesticides required by law to apply this.

So how can Four Seasons Lawn Care still treat lawns for Chafer Grubs?

Fashion Technicolour SummerFashion by NatalieLast year, pure, Gothic black tried to edge its way

into summer day-wear with mixed success. This year, the high

street looks entirely different. Adventurous and enlivened,

summer embraces its brighter side. Primary colours like

pillar box red, sunshine yellow and royal blue are about

to enter our wardrobes.

Yet, after seasons of monochrome, neutrals and subtle

pastels, many of us will fi nd it hard

to inject bright colour into our

outfi ts, especially our business

wardrobes. So here’s our

essential guide to the ways we

can all wear technicolour, shopping

tips included.

Block colouring. One option is to

choose just a single bold colour and

carry it through the whole outfi t. For

instance, a red dress teamed with red

shoes. If you build up a few outfi ts

this way, you can then start to mix

and match on those days when you’re

feeling a little more adventurous. You

could add contrasting accessories, or

pair your yellow skirt with your green top

and shoes. Try keeping to a single colour for

each item to ensure the look stays modern and sophisticated.

Subdue with black. This is a great option for those who feel

most comfortable in neutrals. Black can help to offset the

brightness of shades like red and blue, so try pairing a blue dress

with a black jacket or a red dress with black

shoes. Depending on the primary shade,

white can offset brightness too, especially

sunshine yellows. Enjoy experimenting

with different colours and neutrals to fi nd

the blend that suits you best.

Go for the rainbow. If you’re

already pretty comfortable with

colour or you’re keen to try a completely new look, seek

out garments that mix their technicolours in patterns. Some

designers like Prada and Chanel have embraced the blending of

primary colours within their Spring Summer collections by using

stripes or squares to highlight the bold differences in shade.

Other’s like Roksanda Ilincic chose just two colours, splitting a

garment in half - one side yellow, one side orange. This

latter option keeps to the principles of block colouring but

in a surprising and original way. Mixing primary colours

in a single garment is defi nitely audacious, playing

with a sense of fun and whimsy. And when you add

in tip number four, it can also be very chic.

Simple lines. This is a great rule to keep in

mind when shopping, especially if you’re

mixing primary colours. The most fl exible,

wearable brights are those that don’t

compete with embellishment and

complex shapes. Keeping the cuts simple

with clean lines lets the colour do the talking and

helps to prevent an outfi t from looking ‘too much’. This cocoon

shaped dress from Debenhams, with its gently tapering

skirt, is a perfect example of the kind of modern, clean

lines you should look out for.

Two piece suits. A striking blue trouser suit is a

neat way to bring the technicolour look into the

business wardrobe. With its roots in a traditional

business shade, a vivid, royal blue suit is bold, yet remains

perfectly acceptable in the work environment. Pair with a simple,

light-weight white blouse to keep the look crisp and fresh.

Book Review: TigermanNick HarkawayRelease Date: 22 May 2014

Lester Ferris, sergeant of the British Army, is a good man in need of a rest. He’s spent a lot of his life being shot at, and Afghanistan was the last stop on his road to exhaustion. He has no family, he’s nearly forty and burned out and about to be retired. The island of Mancreu is the ideal place for Lester to serve out his time. It’s a former British colony in legal limbo, soon to be destroyed because of its very special version of toxic pollution - a down-at-heel, mildly larcenous backwater. Of course, that also makes Mancreu perfect for shady business, hence the Black Fleet of illicit ships lurking in the bay: listening stations, offshore hospitals, money laundering operations, drug factories and deniable torture centres. None of which should be a problem, because Lester’s brief is to sit tight and turn a blind eye.But Lester Ferris has made a friend: a brilliant, Internet-addled street kid with a comicbook fi xation who will need a home when the island dies - who might, Lester hopes, become an adopted son. Now, as Mancreu’s small society tumbles into violence, the boy needs Lester to be more than just an observer.

Bards at BlidworthArthur Radford continues to pour out gems like a prolifi c poetry machine- particularly about nature. He often slips in a quirky story at meetings of the little Bards group. He is something of a treasure among us.Chris Pearson, who has already had his fi rst collection of poems published (Entrance to Pleasure) has now been commissioned by Thynks Publications to have a second collection published and has also been writing in other genres such as stories for children.George Wilcockson continues to amaze us with his lyrical poems. He overcomes his sight and hearing problems by memorising every poem that he composes in his mind. He is truly remarkable.Gillian Baguley is currently putting together a collection of humorous poems. She is the Pam Ayers of Blidworth Bards!Jan Bebbington writes very much in her own voice with clear and sustained imagery and delighting in her rich vocabulary. We are sorry to have lost Stevie-Leigh to Lutterworth but congratulate her on her new teaching post and hope that she will continue to keep in touch. She is looking to produce a book of poems for childrenThese and other bards continue to pour out some spectacular material and I will be looking forward to putting their poems into the Bards at Blidworth and Beyond 2014 book when it has been produced and published later this year.Christine Michaelhttp://www.thynkspublications.co.uk/Thynks’ books on AmazonWe meet at Blidworth Library

Help Chernobyl Children

Recently the Newark & Sherwood link of the Chernobyl Children

lifeline charity hosted 11 children from Belarus. Children age 8 -11 stayed in our area. The children were very happy with the families and were very grateful for this chance to visit our country. The reason they come to us is so they can have fresh air and good food. They live in the Gomel area of Belarus in a town called Kalinkovichi. They need respite from living in the area because the land they live on is contaminated by the nuclear fallout from Chernobyl in 1986. The children have weak immune systems and as they get older may have big problems with their health. Giving them a few weeks away from the area can improve their health.

We are now looking for hosts in your area to look after a child or two (the choice is yours) in the summer from 26th July -23rd August 2014. You can host for the full 4 weeks or just two weeks and then the child (ren) will stay with another host family. You will see a massive improvement with these children in just the short stay they are with you. They can stay with a family with or without children and also retired persons. The joy on their faces is something to behold.

There is full support throughout the period the children are with you in the way of 24/7 help with anything and a full complement of support hosts. Language is not a problem as we have a leader/interpreter and also learning the basics such as please, thank you, yes, no is fun as is them learning our language.

The child (ren) and you with your family will visit various places in the area such as swimming, parks and a host of other places. No cost to these visits is made by yourselves for the child (ren) or for yourselves and your family. The pictures in this article are of children this winter enjoying days out with their host families.

If you wish for further information regards hosting a child (ren) please contact myself Mr Robert Crampton 01623-237824 or 07815-473802 anytime. Thank you for reading this article.

Blidworth & District Historical & Heritage SocietyOur May meeting on the 6th was a great success with our best ever attendance of members and visitors present to hear Michael Clarke talk about the Pentrich uprising of 1817. This was a time of industrial unrest when traditional work practices in the textile industry were being challenged with the introduction of machinery that could do the work of ten men in a tenth of the time. The upshot of the uprising, which saw an army of working men march on Nottingham from the village of Pentrich in Derbyshire, with the intention of taking the town over, was that three men were hung and beheaded and thirteen others, were sent to Australia for life, as convicts. During the break, refreshments were served and the audience had a chance to talk and ask questions of Michael.During the coffee break members and guests were invited to view another selection of photographs from our archives - one of them containing this month’s deliberate mistake - set by Eric and Sheila Hall. After the break, Alan Higgins continued our presentation of archive photographs. As usual, this was very well received by our members and guests. Our next meeting will be on Tuesday, 3rd June, in the Function Room of Blidworth Welfare, Mansfi eld Road, Blidworth.

Our next three meetings will be ● 3rd June - Ian Morgan -

Within sight of The Gibbet. ● 1st July - Mr Stammers -

The Victorian & Edwardian Seaside.

● 5th August - John Taylor - The Nine Dukes of Portland.

We start at 7 pm and would be very grateful if everyone could be seated by that time. Ample parking is available and new members are always welcome; just turn up on the night. There is normally a small charge of £2 which includes refreshments. If you have any photographs of the village and its people that we may copy and add to our archive we would love to hear from you. If you would like more information please contact us through our website. www.blidworthhistoricalsociety.co.ukEmail: [email protected] You can also follow us on Twitter @BlidworthHistoryIf you have any photographs of the village and its people that we may copy for our archive we would love to hear from you. The Cornwater Club Say Cheese! An expectant audience recently greeted the arrival of Webb Freckingham to Ravens Lodge.Webb, from the Cheese Shop in Nottingham, gave a lively presentation and demonstrated the many uses of cheese. He created a variety of dishes including the Blue Stilton Dip and a Colwick Cheese Pudding. The audience were then invited to sample the dishes and treat themselves to the cheese to enjoy at home.Women’s Institute President , Mary Ledger, thanked Webb on behalf of the Cornwater Club and the Rainworth and Blidworth WI.The evening was a great success and raised £800, which will be divided equally between the two organisations. The Cornwater Club will put this money towards their appeal.

Church ArticleOvercoming FailureAll of us will have experienced failure at some time in our life. Some will still be living with the consequences and the hurt of that failure – perhaps wondering whether they can ever get over it. Well, the good news is that your future is greater than your failure. We all fail at times, but that doesn’t mean we are ‘failures’. History is full of examples of people who have overcome failure – for example:-Albert Einstein couldn’t speak until he was four years old, and didn’t read until he was seven. He was expelled from school and refused admittance to the Zurich Polytechnic School. Yet he went on to win the Nobel Prize and changed the face of modern physics.Winston Churchill seemed so dull as a youth that his father thought he might be incapable of earning a living!Thomas Edison’s fi rst teacher described him as ‘addled’ and his father almost convinced him he was a ‘dunce’!G.K. Chesterton, the English writer, couldn’t read until he was eight years old!In the Bible, the apostle Peter, having denied knowing Jesus three times after the Lord’s arrest, must have felt a total failure, but he was healed and restored and went on to become one of the key foundational leaders of the Christian Church.Maybe, as you read this you are struggling with the effects of failure, and wondering if you can ever succeed again. Take heart and be encouraged! God our heavenly Father is willing and able to help and restore you – with him your future can be greater than your failure!Pastor Paul Johnson (Sherwood Forest Community Church)
