Josh Avance, an Aspirnaut student and 2012 graduate of Poyen High School was recently awarded a full scholarship to Berea College in Berea, Ky. Avance was accepted to Berea in January, and plans to major in Biology. His goal is to become a teacher or a professor. “I am very excited about getting to go to college at Berea. It is a great opportunity,” said Avance. Berea College was founded in 1855 as the first interracial and coeducational college in the South. Today, Berea is ranked among the top liberal arts col- leges in the US. Berea admits only academically promising students and funds their tuition cost of over $23,000 per year. In November of 2011, Avance received the Berea College Pin- nacle Scholar Award of Excel- lence, an award that is given to only 125 applicants from over 500 entries throughout the United States. Avance was honored at an award ceremony in November at Berea. “Josh showed initiative and creativity in his contributions to his assigned project. He also communicated complex con- cepts very well to groups and showed in-depth understand- ing of the science.” said Julie Hudson, Executive Director of AspirnautTM. Avance also participated in the Aspirnaut Summer Research In- ternship Program and the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK)’s STEP-UP programs. Under the sponsorship of these programs he conducted research on diabetic kidney disease at Vanderbilt Uni- versity Medical School. “Josh performed exception- ally well.” said his research mentor, Dr. Billy Hudson, Professor of Medicine. Josh has not only excelled in the Aspirnaut summer program but has also mentored Poyen elemen- tary and middle school students in science in an after-school portion of the Aspirnaut program in which science labs are “beamed” to stu- dents from Vanderbilt. Reader says thank you to emergency responders Dear Editor: On July 4, 2012, we had the scare of our life. Never before have we witnessed a widespread fire so close to our property. It all began over off the Willow Road. It is supposed that the fire began when a piece of glass lying in a pasture was ignited by the torrid sun. In just minutes it was a wildfire. It spread to Hwy. 9, jumped the road and began burning along Hwy. 46. Thank God, it was finally suppressed by the combination of nine volunteer fire departments from Dallas, Grant, and Hot Spring counties; the Arkansas National Guard; the Arkansas Forestry Department; and aided by the sheriff deputies, from as many counties, who directed traffic away from this inferno. We want to say “thank you” for all these civil servants. Their bravery and dedication to saving property and human lives humbles us. We will never take them for granted again.
