From the Senior Pastor

Thanks be to God! And THANK

YOU to so many members for

your very generous response to

our “IMAGINE” Stewardship

Appeal.

Our congregation set a goal of

increasing our financial giving

by $59,689 in 2019, so that we

can achieve five important

ministry initiatives:

$16,645 Youth/Worship Leader to Full-time

15,000 Helping Fund an Associate Pastor

5,000 Serving our Neighbors in Need

12,000 Unbinding Us From Our Building Debt

11,044 Supporting General Operations

$59,689 Total Growth Goal for 2019

To date,118 Statements of Intent have been received. The net

INCREASE in your planned financial giving for 2019 from these

Statements is:

$61,553 General Fund

14,746 Building Fund

$76,299 Total Intended Increase for 2019

Your response is generous and so supportive of the ministry

we do together! It will enable the LCDR Council to propose a

budget to our Congregation Annual Meeting on January 27 that

undergirds our congregation’s continued growth, and includes

these important ministry initiatives.

We also set ourselves a challenge goal that 30 new families will

begin to give electronically with Simply Giving, which makes it

easier to give and also helps the congregation’s cash flow. To

date, 22 more families have said that you intend to, or have

signed up for Simply Giving. Thank you! We will continue to

emphasize this challenge goal (and celebrate with Flandreau

donuts again when we attain this goal). (See page 3).

I want to thank our congregation’s Stewardship Team, with Bob

Harms as chair, and our congregation Council for your

leadership and good work through this Appeal. And thank you

to so very many members of LCDR for your vision, your

support and your generosity. You “imagined” well what we can

(and will) do together in ministry in 2019.

To God be the glory!

P Jeff Sorenson

January 2019

The next Young at Heart gathering is

scheduled for Thursday, January 17 at

12:00 pm in the Fellowship Hall. Potluck

for those 60 year & older for ideas, food

and fellowship.

Your 2019 offering envelopes will be mailed

to your homes on a quarterly basis. The first

set of envelopes should have already arrived

to those who receive envelopes. If you have

recently signed up for Simply Giving, there is

a chance you will still receive envelopes this

first quarter. If you are expecting envelopes

but do not receive them by January 1, 2019,

please contact Keri in the office at 428-3197.

“Imagine” This – a Simply Giving

DONUT CHALLENGE

Here is a fun challenge for ourselves at LCDR. In

our 2019 “Imagine” Stewardship Appeal (to which

you responded so generously) we set a Challenge

Goal that 30 new families would begin giving

electronically through Simply Giving. To date, 22

new families have done so! Thank you. We have over-

achieved our financial goals, and are almost at our

Challenge Goal too! We celebrated our response on

December 2 with Flandreau Donuts for everyone.

So here’s the deal.

When just eight more

families begin Simply

Giving we will reach our

2019 Challenge Goal.

We’ll keep track of

progress toward our

goal on a poster for

everyone to see. And

when the eighth new family signs up, Pastor Jeff will

make a trip to Flandreau again for FLANDREAU

DONUTS! Sound like fun?

From the Director of Youth and Worship:

Happy New Year!

2018 proved to be a grand year with youth events and trips galore. 2019 is looking to be an even greater year as we resume weekly Middle School youth groups and continue with High School Youth group. We have some fun winter excursions planned for January; you will be sure to want to check out! We are also starting sign ups for Augustana University’s Faithfest for 6th-8th grade students.

We enter this month into the church season of Epiphany, a season of realization come after our season of expectation: Advent. The realization that this newborn baby in the manger, Jesus, is finally the one who has come to fulfill the promises God made to send a savior. Through Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection we are able to come to this realization of who we are as people of God; claimed, forgiven, called.

As the cold and dark of January come, remember and realize again who Jesus is and what he has done, and let the loving warmth and light of Christ radiate through you this season.

Sunday School Happenings

I just want to give a big shout out to all who helped

in making our Christmas programs a success. What

a great turnout we had! Nancy Kelm for getting

those little ones to sing their little hearts out! Jann

Saxon for her playing the piano for the little ones.

The 5th graders who did a great job in reciting their

parts (on short notice I might add).

All of the Sunday school teachers for their patience

and understanding amongst the chaos during

practice. Parents, for bringing your kids to Sunday

school every Sunday, helping them learn the song

lyrics. Kids for being such good sports in having to

start singing Christmas songs in early November

and for belting out the choruses to the songs.

Rich Larson for making sure our tech equipment

was working properly. Sadie Schmitt, Erin Larson

and Mitchell Heinemann for running the power

point during the program and practices. Sue

Bredlow for putting together the candles for the

kids to use during Silent Night; Dave Bredlow for

building the risers on one week’s notice! And Bryan

Timperley for helping lead the kids with their songs

and taking charge.

What a great night it was!

I Asked God I asked God to take my pain away. God said, No. It is not for me to take away, but for you to give it up.

I asked God to make my handicapped child whole. God said, No. Her spirit was whole, her body was only temporary.

I asked God to grant me patience. God said, No. Patience is a by-product of tribulations, it isn't granted, it is earned.

I asked God to give me happiness. God said, No. I give you blessings, Happiness is up to you.

I asked God to spare me pain. God said, No. Suffering draws you apart from worldly cares and brings you closer to me.

I asked God to make my spirit grow. God said, No. You must grow on your own, but I will prune you to make you fruitful.

I asked for all things that I might enjoy life. God said, No. I will give you life so that you may enjoy all things.

I ask God to help me LOVE others, as much as he loves me. God said... Ahhhh, finally you have the idea.

Meals that Matter

Meals that Matter is a new WELCA program that will be working alongside the Befrienders Group. We are looking for people who would be able to get together to make ready to-go—hot dishes. These “freezer meals” will be available to our families and other

community members during difficult times or major life changes where an extra meal would be welcomed. Each month a different meal will be prepped and available in times of need. If you are interested in helping, please contact Marsha Symens at 428-3323.

Two Strike Update:

Our Lutheran Christmas Party at Rosebud with our Two Strike Families took place on December 15. We

shared a wonderful Christmas turkey dinner with all

the trimmings. A gift for each child was provided by

TLC, Barb Fox from Colorado, and her ministry group from Wisconsin, along with gloves, scarves and hats

from the Lutheran Church of Dell Rapids. For many of

these children this will be the only gift they receive this Christmas. We finished the day bringing food and

gifts to the White Buffalo Women’s Shelter in Mis-

sion. It was a wonderful time for all of us. Please pray

for our friends at Rosebud as they face another harsh

winter.

Dorothy Peterson Lay Minister to Rosebud

Thank you to everyone who donated gloves, hats, mittens are scarves! They are greatly

appreciated!
