CILASS (the Centre for Inquiry-based Learning in the Artsand Social Sciences) was a national Centre for Excellence inTeaching and Learning (CETL) awarded to The University ofSheffield in 2005 by the Higher Education Funding Councilfor England (HEFCE).

CILASS conducted a five-year programme of work with strands includingreward and recognition for teaching, curriculum development and innovation,educational evaluation and research, enhancement of the University’s physicalestate for learning and teaching, and dissemination. Its main focus was oninquiry-based learning in the arts, humanities and social sciences, and onpromoting integration of university learning, research and teaching. Its workalso extended to supporting development of inquiry-based learning in a rangeof other disciplines, and in other higher education institutions across the UK.CILASS participated in the Learning Through Enquiry Alliance of CETLs at theuniversities of Gloucestershire, Manchester, Reading, Sheffield, SheffieldHallam, Surrey and Warwick and hosted the 3rd annual conference of theAlliance at The University of Sheffield in 2008.

The Companion is intended for those inuniversities who teach, or who support ordevelop learning and teaching, includingacademic staff, practitioner-tutors,librarians, educational developers andlearning technologists. It also is intended for students who work in roles as tutors,learning mentors or partners with staff ineducational enhancement activities.

The terms ‘inquiry’ and ‘research’ can be interpreteddifferently and this is a complicating factor indefinitions of IBL, student research and the relationbetween them. In the Companion, the two terms areused in combination or interchangeably to referinclusively to all forms of scholarly exploration andinvestigation carried out by students as part of theirstudies or in extra-curricular contexts.

International interest in enhancing the role ofstudent inquiry and research in the experience ofhigher education is growing, as reflected currently ina wide range of strategic and developmentalinitiatives. IBL is seen to offer rich opportunities forimproving student learning, linking teaching andresearch more effectively, and strengthening the roleof universities in society. For example, senioruniversity managers from institutions acrossAustralia recently addressed a Communiqué tonational political leaders to underline theimportance of ‘research-mindedness’ for aninnovative knowledge society and to draw attentionto the need to teach ‘all students, not just researchstudents, how to engage in the production ofknowledge as in its acquisition.’2

The Boyer Commission’s critique of teaching inAmerican research universities more than ten yearsago was a key stimulus for the development of thisagenda.3 Arguing that the didactic style of muchteaching in these institutions was failing theirstudents, the Commission proposed a far-reachingblueprint for change to be based on making learningthrough inquiry central to the student experiencefrom the first undergraduate year. More recently, theimportance of this for all students – whether in research-intensive or teaching-intensiveinstitutions – has been emphasized. In the UK, recent national learning and teaching enhancementinitiatives have provided supportive frameworks fordevelopment, including the Research-InformedTeaching Initiative and the CETL programme, bothfunded by HEFCE, and the Scottish Higher EducationEnhancement Themes programme steered by theScottish Higher Education Enhancement Committee.Increasingly, a commitment to student inquiry andresearch is visible in institution-level strategicdocumentation and development activities forlearning and teaching in universities, and in morejoined-up approaches to teaching and researchenhancement.

The Sheffield Companion to IBL is informed by thework of the many participants – students and staff –in CILASS initiatives at UoS and beyond. Combiningpractical resources and guidance with pointers tothe CILASS evidence-base on IBL, it aims to provide aspringboard for exploration of further resources thatcan be accessed via www.shef.ac.uk/ibl. CILASSevaluation data and reports that are drawn on forthe Companion, and CILASS-related publishedresearch, are identified in the Notes and Referencessection of the Companion.

This publication offers an overview of themes in the conceptualisation, design,practice and development of inquiry-based learning (IBL) from the perspective of work carried out through CILASS at The University of Sheffield (UoS).

IBL is an empowering, engaging approach withbenefits for subject learning as well as for thedevelopment of a wide range of important higher-order attributes and skills. Successful IBL flows fromenthusiastic, questioning, purposeful, imaginativeengagement with well-designed inquiry tasks, in achallenging but supportive learning environment. Thestarting-point might, among other possibilities, be anintriguing fieldwork or design problem, a complexcase scenario, or an important research question.Students may be encouraged to share the results oftheir inquiries with each other and wider audiences,including through peer-reviewed publication whereappropriate. Reflecting increasing interest in studentparticipation in the research communities of theirdisciplines, there is a growing trend for outlets suchas Reinvention4 and Diffusion,5 both of which aremulti-disciplinary journals for undergraduateresearch.

Sometimes the term IBL is used to refer specificallyto teacher-guided investigations of student-generated questions. In this Companion, we take it toinclude approaches in which academic staff set thequestions and offer a great deal of guidance on theinquiry process as well as those in which studentshave a larger degree of freedom and control inrelation to both inquiry questions and inquiryprocesses and procedures.

IBL is a flexible approach that can take a variety offorms. It can be used to foster acquisition of clearly-defined, ‘certain’ knowledge such as the conceptualfoundations of a scientific discipline. Alternatively itcan be used to engage students with uncertainty,multiple perspectives and contestation throughexploration of open-ended questions and problemsto which single right answers do not exist. From oneperspective, IBL can be seen as a form of activelearning in which students carry out research-likeactivities to explore and master an existingknowledge-base. From another perspective, IBLextends student learning towards and well into therealms of real research, positioning students as

engaged producers or authors of knowledgeparticipating in generating original intellectual andcreative outcomes of value to their wider academic,professional or social communities. The Companionputs forward a view of IBL that is inclusive of boththese perspectives.

This view of IBL also sees it as encompassing relatedapproaches such as problem-based learning (PBL),project-based learning, case-based learning andproblem-solving. The terms IBL and PBL sometimesare used synonymously. However, ‘IBL’ often is usedin particular to describe approaches that offerstudents considerable freedom in defining anddirecting their inquiries, are oriented towards open-endedness of questions and problems, and have aclear focus on teaching students the researchapproaches and techniques of their disciplines.

‘IBL’ describes a cluster of strongly student-centred learning and teaching approaches inwhich students’ inquiry or research drives the learning experience. Students conduct small- or large-scale inquiries that enable them to engage actively with disciplinary orinterdisciplinary questions and problems. Learning takes place through an emergentprocess of exploration and discovery. Guided by subject specialists and those withspecialist roles in learning support, students use the scholarly and research practices of their disciplines to move towards autonomy in creating and sharing knowledge.

IBL and the research-teachingrelationshipIBL is an especially student-centred approach toresearch-led teaching, being based on studentsdoing research rather than on the communication ofresearch knowledge by staff to students. In makingthe connection between learning and researchexplicit, IBL opens up possibilities for strengtheningthe links between research and teaching inuniversities, inviting students to participate in theknowledge-building communities of their academicor professional disciplines and allowing forproductive staff-student partnerships.6 IBL that isoriented towards open-ended questions andproblems offers particular potential for closeintegration between the teaching and disciplinaryresearch activity of an institution,7 for examplewhere students get involved in working on questionsthat relate to the research and scholarship of theiracademic tutors.

What’s different about IBL?Is IBL unnecessary jargon for fairly standardeducational practice in university teaching? After all,inquiry and research are aspects of many universitystudents’ experiences in the UK and elsewhere.Students are expected to develop initiative aslearners and an independent, critical approach; atmore advanced levels especially, research projectsare common. However, on many courses studentinquiry and research play a secondary role, andlearning and teaching is organized around thecommunication of curriculum subject-matter as thestimulus for student activity. In contrast, IBLorganizes learning and teaching around questionsand problems, and all teaching strategies aredesigned to support the inquiry process. Thisprocess is firmly to the fore.

Academic staff perspectivesPerspectives on IBL vary. Research carried out byCILASS8 showed that academic staff may see IBL asclosely aligned with formal, discipline-basedresearch practice or with a systematic, problem-solving process. Alternatively, they may see theresearch process engaged through IBL as a moregeneral one of critical questioning and exploration,with IBL defined broadly as encouraging ‘inquiring’students to set their own learning goals, plan anddirect their learning, and reflect on outcomes.Academic staff described flexible approaches to IBL,saying that they would adopt different strategies indifferent contexts, for example according to level ofstudy. While emphasizing the aim to foster studentautonomy, some strategies described were morestrongly teacher-led whereas others were morestrongly student-led. Some saw the ‘purest’ andmost powerful forms of IBL as those in whichstudents both devise their own research questionsand direct the development of their inquiries withguidance and support.

Characteristics of IBL9

In IBL, students:

• Learn through a process of inquiry, often co-operatively with peers and using digitalinformation and technologies,

• Apply principles and practices of academic orprofessional inquiry, scholarship or research,

• Engage with questions and problems that oftenare open-ended,

• Explore a knowledge-base actively, criticallyand creatively,

• Participate in building new meaning andknowledge,

• Develop process knowledge and skills in inquirymethods and in other areas includinginformation literacy, reflection and group-work,

• Gain opportunities to share their results oftheir inquiries with each other and with wideraudiences.

Two broadly contrasting ways in which studentsexperience the status of inquiry are represented onthe vertical axis. When viewed through the lens of‘learning’, students experience inquiry as a matter ofexploring and acquiring existing knowledge. Whenviewed through the lens of open-ended ‘knowledge-building’, they experience inquiry as bringingsomething personal or new to an area of study,thereby contributing potentially to the developmentof ideas in a domain.

The horizontal axis adds a second dimension,representing where primary responsibility lies forestablishing the inquiry question or theme. Theamount of process support (guidance, direction andstructure) that students experience is a thirddimension. In this way, four ideal-type modes of IBLare identified, labelled Identifying, Pursuing,Producing and Authoring: in each of these the natureand amount of support will differ according tocontext. Questions in Producing and Authoringmodes may be entirely new to the discipline orsimply new to the student, but in either case areauthentically open in the sense that definitiveanswers have not yet been, or cannot be, found.

The matrix offers a framework onto which theorientation of different IBL experiences and designscan be mapped, either fitting neatly into just one ofthe quadrants or extending across two or more. Thedimensions are continua and, for example, over thecourse of a given inquiry the dynamic of students’activity may include both exploration of existingknowledge and a move towards the creation ofgenuinely new meaning or the making of newdiscoveries (not only new to the student). Similarly,in an extended inquiry process, students may movefrom a more to a less structured and supportedexperience as they gain in confidence and skills.

In Figure 3, IBL is represented as inclusive of bothPBL and student research, including research at amore advanced level as typified by the researchdissertation. PBL is mapped here on the ‘tutor-framed’ and more ‘strongly-supported’ dimension ofthe matrix. However, some approaches to PBL invitestudents to devise problem scenarios themselves oroffer looser structure and direction.

A 3-D versionThis framework has been re-created in 3-D in thevirtual world, Second Life.13

IBL: a framework

This framework10 for conceptualising different modes of IBL extends work on different waysof linking research and teaching in the student experience11 and offers a tool for IBL designand evaluation. Key dimensions of undergraduates’ experiences of inquiry and research, asthese emerged from CILASS research,12 are represented as a matrix.

Authoring: Students explore their own open questions, problems, scenarios or lines of inquiry, ininteraction with a knowledge-base (‘how can I answer my open question?’).

Producing: Students explore open questions, problems, scenarios or lines of inquiry, framed by teachersor others such as an external ‘client’, in interaction with a knowledge base (‘how can I answer this openquestion?’).

Pursuing: Students explore a knowledge-base actively by pursuing their own questions, problems,scenarios or lines of inquiry (‘what is the existing answer/response to my question?’).

Identifying: Students explore a knowledge-base actively in response to questions, problems, scenarios orlines of inquiry framed by teachers (‘what is the existing answer/response to this question?’).

IBL educators aim to inspire a questioning, open stance in students and to fosterdevelopment of higher-order dispositions and capabilities – in areas such as initiative, self-belief, responsibility, independence of mind, critical judgment, problem-solving, creativity,self-management, collaboration, communication – that are essential for life and work in ahighly complex and challenging world. IBL can be seen as a powerful means of developingskills that are prized by employers and that are central to an enterprising andentrepreneurial outlook. From another perspective, IBL and the closer integration ofresearch and teaching can be seen as a fundamental challenge to the idea of students asconsumers of university education and a move toward re-positioning them as producers ina radically reinvented model of the academy.14

The Sheffield Graduate15

At UoS, the 2005-2010 Learning Teaching and Assessment Strategy set an objective for students in alldisciplines to experience an IBL-infused approach to learning and knowledge-building. The approaches,knowledge and skills that characterize learning in IBL mode are embedded in the University’s articulationof the attributes of The Sheffield Graduate.

PurposesCILASS conducted an analysis of the educationalaims expressed by IBL curriculum developmentproject leaders at UoS.16 Staff wanted to improvestudents’ experiences in these areas:

• Engagement with academic subject-matter and thelearning process,

• Enjoyment of learning,

• Autonomy and responsibility in learning,

• Academic performance and grades,

• Awareness of the real-world relevance and value ofstudies in non-vocational as well as vocationalsubjects, and of inquiry itself,

• Reflexivity in learning and inquiry, and awarenessof process issues,

• Strengthened identification with their discipline orwith professional practice and communities invocational subjects,

• Inquiry and ‘transferable’ skills in a wide range ofareas, of relevance to lifelong learning,

• Participation in open-ended debate with nodefinitively right answers,

• A more holistic, integrated sense of curriculum orinter-disciplinary subject connections,

• Recognition of the transferability of knowledgeprocesses across subjects and disciplines,

• Preparation for higher levels of study.

Most CILASS project leaders highlighted theirintention to use IBL to engage students with anexisting knowledge-base and its modes of analysisand representation. Some also highlighted their aimto encourage students’ development as knowledge-builders, in the sense of working towardscontributing to creating new disciplinary andinterdisciplinary knowledge.

The student experienceCILASS gathered extensive evidence on theexperience of IBL that shows highly positive impactson students’ intellectual, personal and professionaldevelopment. Benefits reported included: greaterenthusiasm, interest, confidence, initiative,ownership and responsibility in learning; deeperengagement with subject-matter and improvedsubject knowledge; a sense of intellectual freedomand of ‘growing up’; strengthened identification withan academic or professional discipline; moreadvanced conceptions of inquiry and of the role andpotential of students in knowledge-building;improved skills in areas such as information literacy,communication, use of ICT; greater group cohesionin class and closer relations between staff andstudents; recognition of the relevance of IBL to foremployability and continued learning after university.A large majority of respondents to the longitudinalCILASS Graduating Student Survey (2006-10)reported valuing IBL highly.

These findings are broadly consistent with thosereported in the growing research literature on IBL. A large-scale quantitative study of the studentexperience in the USA concluded that studentinquiry and research in the undergraduatecurriculum can be described as ‘high impact’ inrelation to several indicators of intellectual andpersonal development.17 Evidence from a variety of sources18 highlights themes such as improvedstudent grades, development of a range of meta-cognitive and academic skills, transfer of inquiryskills across courses, enhanced student engagement,changes in students’ understandings of learning,teaching and research; improved transition fromsecondary education and retention in highereducation. Some research suggests that manystudents prefer learning through inquiry andresearch over other methods.19

CILASS evaluation and research also served tohighlight student concerns and difficulties relating toIBL. IBL can unsettle students’ expectations andbeliefs about learning and teaching and it is anapproach that, in asking students to play a role indirecting their own learning, can pose significantintellectual and practical challenges. Provision ofappropriate support, as well as challenge, is essentialfor successful IBL.

‘What I liked about [IBL] was that I was freer in away. I didn’t know that you as a first year, or a

student at all, could refute arguments putforward by academics. I encountered a theory

that I really disagreed with and I had brilliantexamples of it not being true at all, and I got to

do that by myself. I built my own arguments, andthat was really, really good for me. I really

enjoyed that, because it was free. I don’t thinkthat you can do that to the same extent in an

essay because that mode often is a set question– of course you can say if you agree or not agree

to what it states, but the question often is basedon certain concepts or certain theories, while in

this [inquiry] project we could choose ourapproach by ourselves. That was really good.’

IBL can be used as the design principle for wholeteaching units (modules) or degree programmes.Alternatively, as a hybrid and smaller-scale approach,IBL can be incorporated into more traditionalcurriculum designs, for example as part of seminar,laboratory or fieldwork activities.

Theoretical perspectivesThere is no one way to do IBL and CILASS did notimpose any specific theory or model on thedevelopment of practice. However, a number oftheories of student learning were found useful ininforming the work of the CETL. In particular,constructivism in its various guises offers support foreducational approaches based on inquiry, in takinglearning to be an active intellectual and social processof knowledge-creation and in indicating that studentsare more likely to adopt ‘deep’ learning strategieswhen engaged with tasks that are authentic to theirfield, using its techniques and tools. The Americantradition of constructive-developmental research intostudents’ intellectual and personal developmentoffered a useful point of reference for the CETL21 asdid the practice model of constructive alignment.22

CILASS also drew on theory and research evidencerelating to students’ information literacy developmentand technology-enhanced learning.23

Designing for IBL

CILASS evaluation and research consistentlyconfirmed the value and importance of guidance andfeedback in a range of areas including initialorientation to IBL, question-formulation, direction-setting for inquiries, information literacy, and group-work. Without support, students can struggle.

IBL encourages students to become self-directing inquirers while providing tasks,resources, guidance, feedback and assessments to support the inquiry process. Designingfor IBL involves establishing conditions in which students’ inquiries are stimulated and canflourish, and in which a productive balance is struck between the level of challenge andsupport they experience. IBL does not hand over full responsibility for learning to students:instead, this is shared between students and staff. At the level of specific courses andactivities, this may involve students taking on the role of designers (or co-designers) oftheir own learning, for example in taking the lead in framing the focus of their inquiries, and in deciding on methods and tools. Students also may be involved in designing for IBL at programme or departmental level. For example, a CILASS-supported project involvedstudents in the Institute for Lifelong Learning at UoS working collaboratively with academicstaff to develop IBL across several courses.20

Design for IBL: this refers to the planning (and documentation) of tasks, and preparation of associatedcontent-resources, for an IBL event of any scale.

Tasks and task sequencing Tasks designed tostimulate and provide a framework for inquiryinclude problem scenarios, field-work investigations,experiential learning projects and laboratoryexperiments, as well as research projects ofdifferent kinds. IBL is more likely to begin with anopen question or scenario, or perhaps a reflection ordiscussion activity, than with communication of aunit of subject content. Frameworks such as Kolb’slearning cycle24 – ‘do, reflect, conceptualise, apply’ –or PBL protocols25 offer points of reference for tasksequencing.

A wide range of tasks can be designed to helpstudents engage with relevant theory and subjectmatter.

IBL curriculum development projects supported byCILASS also designed ‘process support’ tasks aimedat fostering the development of students’ processknowledge and skills, including in areas such asorientation to IBL, formulating research questions,inquiry methods, information literacy, reflection and ICT use.

Student inquiry The two inter-related elements ofa student inquiry – its topic and its process – bothare central to IBL design.

Inquiries often engage students with real worldissues and problems in applied subject areas,exploring the relation between theory and practice.CILASS supported a number of projects thatinvolved students working on research questionsgenerated through interaction with organisationsbeyond UoS in the local community or further afield.These included Sociology undergraduatesconducting research on issues of social importancefor clients such as the Citizen’s Advice Bureau, orworking collaboratively with service users. Dentistrystudents researched issues arising during theirprofessional placements. Town and Regional Planningstudents explored the impact of the Gautrain, a newhigh speed rail link in Johannesburg, South Africa,which is being used to encourage economicdevelopment in the region. Drawing on real-lifeprimary material gathered by staff, includinginterviews with planners and developers, digitisedpaper documents, photographs, and video footage ofsites and life in the surrounding communities,students had to come up with a plan for just,sustainable and financially viable developmentaround one of the new train stations. Similarexamples also from UoS include third-yearComputer Science undergraduates working on real-life software development projects for externalclients, first-year Architecture students creatingpieces of public art for a local urban regenerationinitiative and Journalism students researching localand national elections in ‘real-time’.26

In many of the IBL initiatives taken forward throughCILASS there was a strong, explicit focus on processin the intended learning outcomes, with the aim ofenabling students to develop process, as well assubject, knowledge and skills.

Assessments Assessment plays a critical role instudent learning, with research evidence suggestingthat students are likely to engage most with whatthey think they will be tested on.27 Aligning theassessment of student achievement with theintended learning outcomes of student inquiries inIBL means that process, as well as subject knowledgeand skills, may become the focus for assessment. Atthe same time, traditional forms of assessment suchas essays or exams are not always appropriate, ormay be supplemented with other forms. In CILASScurriculum development projects often an essay orexam was replaced by a portfolio with a number ofcomponents. Podcasts, wikis, blogs, posters,mindmaps, animations, films, portfolios, diaries andresearch reports were among the assessed outputsof student inquiry used in projects. Peer and self-assessment were features of many projects and insome cases, students themselves established thecriteria by which the outputs of their inquiries wereassessed, in negotiation with academic staff.

Information Designing IBL involves making decisionsabout which, how much, and when information willbe provided to students, as compared with studentsgathering and evaluating information by themselves.CILASS supported a number of projects thatdeveloped rich digital information resource banks –typically accessed via a virtual learning environment– for students to explore. Other projects placedemphasis on students using information search toolsto access information from the wider digitalenvironment. A number of projects demonstratedthat lectures can be integrated effectively into IBL asa means of communicating both subject and processinformation, and that a variety of activities can beused to inject an element of student inquiry intothese sessions.

Technology In some subject areas, IBL involves theuse of specialist technology and equipment. Moregenerally, digital technologies are changing researchpractices within and across disciplines andprofessional domains, and offer new possibilities forlearning and teaching in either blended or fully on-line modes. For both these reasons digital resourcesand tools – including archives and datasets, Web 2.0tools and platforms, virtual simulations, mobiletechnologies – are commonly an embedded featureof IBL, supporting interactions amongst peers andtutors, access to information, experimentation, andthe production and sharing of inquiry outputs.Examples from UoS include the use of an on-linediscussion board for students to post reflections onreadings in preparation for inquiry activitiesundertaken in class, and Access GridVideoconferencing to facilitate collaborative inquirybetween groups of students from UoS and anotherinstitution.28 Technology also was used by someCILASS projects to help support IBL with largestudent numbers.

There is perhaps a special affinity between the ethosand practices of IBL and Web 2.0, and a number ofCILASS projects experimented successfully withtools including blogs, wikis and the virtual world,Second Life. For example, second year Historystudents generated research questions and thenused Diigo, an open access research and knowledgesharing tool, to create an on-line information base tosupport their own and each others’ inquiries.29

Similarly, as part of a Legal History module, groups ofLevel 3 students collaborated to research and createentries for a wiki shared with other groups.30

Research carried out by CILASS studentambassadors31 suggests that many students may beless proficient and independent users of digitaltechnologies for the purposes of conducting inquiryand research than might be assumed of ‘digitalnatives’. This is consistent with the findings of thewider evidence-base on students’ use of digitaltechnologies for academic learning32 and points tothe likely value of including tasks and guidancefocused specifically on effective technology use inIBL design where technology plays an important role.This research also suggested that students are notenthusiastic about technology use in IBL where thepurpose is unclear.

Tutoring IBL challenges both staff and students torethink and reconfigure conventional relations ofpower and control in the classroom and to find newforms of interaction that fit with values and goalsrelating to development of student autonomy inlearning and knowledge-building. Academic staff atUoS describe the role of the IBL tutor variously asfacilitator, guide, resource, or partner with studentsin a relation of co-inquiry. Several IBL developmentprojects supported by CILASS included studenttutors or mentors working alongside academic staff.For example, on a first-year History of EnglishLanguage project to create an annotatedbibliography, research proposal and a short researchpaper, higher-year students assisted first-years withinformation search and evaluation tasks, and ideasdevelopment.34

Inquiry in Second Life33

Sheila Webber; School of Information, UoS

Second Life, the 3D virtual world, was found to be a fruitful environment for IBL by a CILASS projectleader. Working in groups, first-year students of Information Management conduct small-scale inquiriesinto the information needs and practices of users of Second Life. They carry out a research interview inSecond Life with a Second Life resident exploring an incident when the person needed information tocarry out an activity in the virtual world. They compare their results with findings from informationbehaviour research in ‘real life’ to which they have been introduced earlier in the module. They thenreflect critically on the process of their inquiry and the development of their research understanding and skills. Support includes remote Second-Life-only tutoring by librarians.

Spaces Traditional physical learning and teachingspaces in universities place constraints on thedevelopment and practice of IBL. CILASS exploredthe value of classrooms designed specifically for IBLin the arts, humanities and social sciences and theimpact that space can have on changing the ways inwhich academic staff and students think aboutlearning and teaching.

Peer-to-peer Group-work and peer co-operationare features of much IBL and some approaches aimto foster the development of inquiry communitieswithin or across student year-groups, for example inprofessional education contexts. Feedback fromCILASS projects indicated that group-work often wasan especially challenging aspect of IBL for students.Productive approaches to supporting group-work inIBL included encouraging students to define group‘contracts’ at the outset – establishing where andhow often they will meet, who will take which roles,how non-participation will be tackled and so on –and holding half-way tutorial meetings with groupsfocusing specifically on group process.

Dissemination Sharing and dissemination ofstudents’ inquiry outputs, within or beyond theimmediate student peer group, was a feature ofseveral CILASS project designs for IBL. For example,Masters students in Architecture at UoS developedindividual action research projects to investigatecreative risk-taking in professional practice. Theirprojects were to be of a standard suitable for journalpublication and part of the assessment took theform of draft journal papers.36 Other approachesincluded creating conference-style events withstudents presenting their work to each other andother interested parties using research posters or slide presentations.

Progression in IBLIBL initiatives supported by CILASS illustrated thevalue of introducing IBL as early as Level 0(Foundation) and at induction for new first-years.For example, a week-long group-based IBL inductionproject was designed for students of HumanCommunication Science involving higher-yearstudents supporting new entrants. In Psychology,CETL funding was used to support enhanced supportfor progression in IBL through successive levels ofstudy.37 Figures 5 and 638 offer broad frameworks forplanning progression in IBL. More tightly structuredand guided forms of IBL are appropriate at lessadvanced levels of study. Undergraduate degreeprogrammes might therefore be structured to leadstudents in a broadly step-by-step (or snake-like)progression through Identifying, Pursuing, Producingand Authoring (Figure 5). However, it also is possibleto design spiral, rather than linear, models ofprogression through an inquiry curriculum (Figure6). Research carried out by CILASS39 suggests thatopportunities for first-years in arts, humanities andsocial sciences disciplines to engage in tightly-structured, small-scale, open-ended inquiries thatare explicitly oriented toward knowledge-buildingmay powerfully support development in areas suchas identity-formation, personal epistemology andself-belief. The study also suggests that opportunitiesfor first-year students to develop skills in framingtheir own inquiry questions may have particularlystrong impact in terms of engagement andconfidence.

Digital designDigital tools have been created specifically tosupport the creation, sharing and re-purposing ofdesigns for learning. An example is the open sourceLearning Activity Management System (LAMS) which,as trialled by CILASS, was used successfully to designsome approaches to IBL. LAMS aims to encourageactivity-oriented design thinking and supportsvisualization of linked steps in a learning process.Once learning designs have been created in LAMSthey can be run with students (either face-to-face oronline), published to a wider community and reusedby others. Students, as well as educators, can useLAMS to plan a sequence of inquiry activities.40

Visualising IBL designFigure 7 offers one way of representing IBL design atthe level of extended course units, illustrating theshape of one possible IBL design in relation to anumber of dimensions.

In this section some IBL curriculum development initiatives supported by CILASS within andbeyond UoS are outlined, illustrating a spectrum of approaches across a number of disciplines.

IBL induction for engineersLinda Gray; Dr Anthony Rossiter; Department ofAutomatic Control and System Engineering, UoS

An undergraduate induction programme aims toengage new students with IBL, orient theirexpectations of university study and assist transitionfrom school. The previous lecture-based inductionformat is replaced with: a pre-arrival individualresearch task about the role of a systems engineer,with students’ work uploaded to the Virtual LearningEnvironment for future use; a ‘Robot Challenge’ teamcompetition in which students investigate how toprogram a Lego MindstormsTM robot to achieve anumber of tasks, using information drawn from arange of different sources; and, a group-basedinformation-seeking task (learning trail, focused oninduction information relating to their course and theUniversity). These activities are supported byresource packs, an introductory lecture and practicalsessions on the use of the Virtual LearningEnvironment and University portal. The RobotChallenge involves randomly selected teams carryingout tasks devised by second-year students. Feedbackindicates that new undergraduates find the activities‘very challenging but great fun’ (student) andbeneficial in aiding transition to university study,enabling them to develop friendships with peers andgiving a sense of identification with their newdepartment. Staff comment on students’ appreciationof the time spent in their department during ‘introweek’.

Understanding lawDr Mark Taylor and Dr Natasha Semmens; Dr ClareMcGourlay and Dr Jonathan Doak; School of Law, UoS

This approach aims to meet the challenges offacilitating IBL with a group of over 400 students bymeans of a blended learning approach making use of avirtual learning environment. Key aims are tointroduce first year Law students to the nature oflegal problems and to develop their skills in legalinquiry. Inquiry-oriented tasks are supported withlectures and seminars. Students use an electronicworkbook that, with a series of structured weeklyinquiry exercises and scenarios, guides them throughactivities including legal information-seeking andanalysis. They come together to discuss their research(what they find and how they find it) in colloquia ledby second and third year student tutors. Students

produce a series of individual, reflective learning diaryentries plus a case critique for assessment. Feedbackindicates that students find the IBL approach intensivecompared with that of more traditional approachesbut value the inquiry, information literacy and othertransferable skills they develop. A second-semestermodule adopts a similar electronic inquiry workbookand learning diary approach, with 250 studentsworking in groups to research topics they areinterested in and producing a digital resource (video,podcast, slide presentation) to present to others at a‘celebration of learning’ event.

Biblical studies fieldworkDr Diana Edelman; Department of Biblical Studies,UoS

As part of three weeks of archaeological fieldwork inIsrael, pairs of third-year students in Biblical Studieswork together to make video recordings of aspects ofthe archaeological dig process and interviewspecialists about other aspects in which they are notdirectly involved. Students are given support andguidance on filmmaking and the use of technology andthey edit their footage to create films in the first fewweeks of the autumn semester. The films are assessedby the lecturer and peers. Through this project,students need to do independent research about thearchaeological process, from the initial conceptionand approval of a project, through implementation,and on to publication of findings. They need to decidewhich images to capture on site during the excavationprocess and which topics to cover during interviewsor in other creative ways. They develop a range oftechnical and transferable skills while producingusable resources for future cohorts of students.Students involved find the IBL approach hard workbut motivating, appreciating the extra responsibilitiesafforded to them by the filmmaking and peerassessment processes. One student said: ‘I thought Iwas going there to do some work but I actually grewvery much as a person from the experience’.44

Inquiry in information management45

‘Inquiry in Information Management’ is a first-year,second-semester core module with an enrolment ofabout 30. A key aim is to encourage the participationof students at an early stage in the research culture of

their department and university. Students work ingroups on small-scale research projects, fromgenerating their own worthwhile research questionswithin the broad theme of ‘the university as aninformation environment’, through ethics approvalprocesses, to presenting findings at a research ‘mini-conference’. Development of students’ understandingof, and skills in, the inquiry process is supportedthrough participatory workshops and onlineresources. Work on projects starts in the fourth weekof twelve, following a series of preparatory workshopsthat include exploring students’ conceptions ofresearch and how to pose and investigate researchquestions. In the final week, guests at the mini-conference include PhD students, lecturers andresearchers. All guests contribute to assessment ofresearch posters, using criteria that the students onthe module have established previously in negotiationwith their academic tutors. The module features inputfrom practitioners in the field, who share theirexperience of Information Management and of therelevance of research and inquiry in practice settings,and comment from their perspective on students’research proposals and work.

Exploring an on-line editionDr Rhian Davies; School of Modern Languages andLiterature, UoS

This module for around 30 second year students inHispanic Studies aims to maximize the opportunitiesoffered by research-led teaching using the interactiveelectronic edition of Benito Pérez Galdós’s novelTorquemada en la Hoguera (1889) created by themodule leader. The intention is to stimulate studentsto work like researchers and develop new ways ofreading literary texts, while improving their skills ininformation literacy and collaborative learning. Inquiryexercises are provided in electronic form, designed tocomplement the electronic edition and to poseincreasing challenging research questions as themodule progresses. Students work in groups inworkshops where they have access to the on-lineedition and other resources, tackling tasks such as:analysing character by using the edition’s characterindexes; or the significance of particular words byusing the edition’s search mechanism. Studentscritically appraise the work of other groups and keepreflective diaries. Their work is assessed by individualessay or other forms of assessment such as characterstudies. Students emphasise that the approachencourages independent investigation. One commentsthat: ‘I think this text has stuck out because I’ve got alot more involved with the text. Skills I have learntfrom studying this text will help with other books’.

IBL for international healthcare policyGraham Jones; Dr Sarah Barnes; School of Health andRelated Research, UoS

A cohort of 34 Masters students from 17 differentcountries with diverse subject-backgrounds explorefactors driving health policy and system changesacross the globe. A full module (twelve 2-hourclasses) is designed around students working in smallgroups to carry out a sequence of 3 different inquiriesbased on real-life policy dilemmas. The starting-pointfor each is a question to be addressed and suggestedlines of investigation. Support includes a set ofinformation resources, including newspapers, greyliterature and video clips, prepared by academictutors and made available via a virtual learningenvironment, plus a lecture session introducingrelevant conceptual and contextual material. Studentswork together during contact hours with tutorsavailable for questions and advice in a CILASS inquirycollaboratory space that is designed to supportflexible group-work with access to digitaltechnologies. Assessment is by group presentations.Evaluation of the first iteration of the modulehighlights the value of physical space that combines‘pods’ for small groups each gathered around a largecomputer screen, with ease of movement from small-group to whole-class mode and vice versa. It alsoindicates how working in this way with people fromother cultures at an early stage in the programmestimulates valuable friendships and networks amongstudents.

Medicine in the mediaPhilip Chan, Sheffield Vascular Unit; Professor JackieHarrison; Journalism Studies, UoS

Why are the media so concerned about MRSA(methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus)? Doestheir coverage actually correspond to the scientificevidence? Second year students from the UoSMedical School are helped by staff from theDepartment of Journalism Studies to answer thesequestions. Students spend seven weeks investigatingthe ways in which the depiction of MRSA has changedover the past decade in newspapers ranging from theSun to the Times via the Yorkshire Post. Studentsreceive support in information literacy skillsdevelopment, content analysis and productionanalysis. As well as analysing articles, students designand conduct interviews with journalists. Research isrecorded using blog-based learning diaries. Thisinterdisciplinary project is a pilot for a broaderprogramme to develop the Medical School’s problem-based learning curriculum in order to improve higherlevel learning skills in Medical students. Studentspresent their findings formally in a conference-style

Contemporary visual arts in FranceDr Amanda Crawley-Jackson; School of ModernLanguages and Literature, UoS

This project enables final year undergraduatestudents from the Department of French to engagewith the work of contemporary artists from France.Working in small groups, students research artistsand key themes in French contemporary fine artpractice, making presentations about their findingsand expressing their opinions on the artists’ work.Each of the small groups decide on an exhibitiontheme and, using the work of the artists they discoverin the course of their research, prepare a virtualexhibition using Google SketchUpTM andaccompanying contextual learning materials forexhibition visitors, including brochures, podcast audioguides and worksheets for young people. Each of theexhibitions is then reviewed by student peers, usingcriteria they have developed while designing theirown exhibition. Over the course of the module,students keep a learning journal, which they presentas part of their assessment. As well as learning aboutcontemporary visual arts in France, students developa variety of other skills, not least in independentresearch, critical thinking and group working. TheLeverhulme Trust supported the artist NicolasMoulin’s three-month residency in Sheffield in thefirst year of this approach, so that students were ableto talk to a well-known practising artist about hiswork, getting advice about their exhibitions andlearning about the real life processes of the art world.

An IBL approach to statisticsStephen Wise; Department of Geography, UoS

A core statistics module for first year Geographers ismodified to incorporate IBL. Students explore ageographical question, which is stimulating, open-ended and for which a quantitative approach providesuseful insights – for example, relating to evidence forand against a North/South divide in Britain, or theextent to which climate and climate change variesacross the UK. Students have a role in deciding howto explore the question, thus engaging their interestand developing their skills in undertaking research.Initial instruction in statistical methods providessufficient information for their application bystudents working in groups, which is furthersupported by regular lectures and practical sessions.In this way the selection and application of statisticaltechniques is the key focus of their learning. At a finalconsolidation stage the full range of statisticalmethods is reviewed. In providing the explanation

after students have had a chance to explore and applythe methods themselves, the links between theoryand practice are more comprehensible and easier tore-apply for future use. Students’ feedback indicatesthat the approach noticeably improves their interestin, and engagement with, statistics, and there is animprovement in marks and attendance.

IBL and international students incomputingBriony Oates; School of Computing, TeessideUniversity

Most students on a core Masters-level Computingmodule on Project Research and Development areinternational (non-EU). They often are notaccustomed to UK higher education teaching andlearning approaches, including IBL and group-work.The IBL design uses a scaffolded approach to enablethem to learn about and adapt to IBL. Inquiry tasksare designed to build up in terms of academicchallenge throughout the module. They begin with agroup photograph task aimed at getting students toknow each other, and they continue to work togetheron a systematic review of research literature on atopic of their choice, selecting and properlyreferencing a given number of relevant papers, andanalysing and evaluating three of these. Built into themodule is an explicit exploration of the IBL processand the SCONUL Seven Pillars of InformationLiteracy.46 Students also develop a website using astructured process, with a team contract and actionminutes for each meeting. The outputs of theirresearch and information literacy activities form thecontent of the website, making up one part of theassessment for the module. Other assessed outputsinclude staged group hand-ins relating to theresearch activity, a group presentation, and anindividual essay reflecting on students’ understandingof the research and information literacy activitiesundertaken and the skills they have developed.

Dramatising slavery and emancipatingstudentsDr Alan Rice; School of Journalism, Media andCommunication, University of Central Lancashire

Students too often believe that their lecturers ownthe knowledge imparted to them and that they arepassive recipients of it. This module is designed toenable students to see how their own individual andcollaborative research and ideas can feed into the on-going development of a resource put together overthe years by one of their lecturers. This resource is aperformance-based tableau that has been taken intoschools and museums and had particular purchase in2007 when, with the commemorations of thebicentenary of the abolition of slavery, schoolteachers and educational officers were looking for

novel ideas to impart information about thetransatlantic slave trade. Students from the secondand third year of an American Studies degreeexperience a live project to develop the tableau (e.g.its characters, scenes and background materials) byconducting their own primary research in archivesand other contexts. The project enables students todevelop flexibility and independent learning skills,confidence in using primary and secondary resourcesand team-working skills to build individual researchprojects into a collaborative resource. They immersethemselves in the study of slavery over an eight monthperiod and ultimately produce resources to makewhat had been an underdeveloped learning tool into amuch more user-friendly and attractive multi-mediaevent.

IBL in management accountingSue Davey-Evans; Ian Toon; Department of Accountingand Finance, University of Portsmouth

The traditional text book and lecture approach inteaching management accounting does little to bringthe subject to life or encourage students to see therelevance in adapting techniques to real worldscenarios. This second-year module aims to helpstudents to apply concepts and techniques tobusiness problems as they learn about them.Students’ activity centres, for a full year, on simulationexercises in combination with a case study. Studentsare provided with the case at the beginning of theyear and participate in a series of management boardmeeting simulations over the year, givingpresentations on different issues of relevance to thecase study company. For each board meeting, workingin groups, students research a different businessissue, and they rotate board roles over this period.During weekly classes time is allocated for studentgroups to analyse the case study and discuss theirfindings with the academic tutor. This is an importantpart of the learning process as tutors are able toutilise directed questioning techniques and refergroups to relevant resources. In addition to formingthe basis for group-work, the case studies are thebasis of a final closed book exam at the end of theyear.

Exploring literary inquiry47

Dr Duco van Oostrum; Dr Richard Steadman-Jones;School of English Literature, Language and Linguistics,UoS

During a 12 week module, around 20 second-yearstudents of English Literature, Language andLinguistics conduct a multi-dimensional inquiry intoone literary text (Alex Haley’s Roots). The approach isintended to heighten their awareness of the inquiryprocess in its different forms, to encourage them to

develop more independence and initiative asinquirers, and to stimulate increased confidence andpleasure in working with texts. Interactive seminarsorganised around collaborative inquiry tasks explore 8modes of inquiry and the interconnections betweenthem: history, theory, close reading, writing,technology, sources, science and performance. Forexample, in ‘science’ students explore questionsrelating to the representations of speech in the noveland in ‘writing’ they write a short poem or link atheme into their own autobiography. Students’inquiries are supported by a rich range of multimediaresources accessed via a Virtual Learning Environmentand weekly lectures. Assessment is by eight shortpostings to the Virtual Learning Environment bulletinboard and three written pieces. Academic tutoringincludes a reflective blog maintained by tutors andextensive use is made of the facilities of acollaboratory (research classroom) space in whichstudents can access on-line resources, capture off-line work digitally, present to others using plasmascreens, and configure the room to suit theiractivities. Students are enthusiastic about thedifferent modes of exploration and the transferabilityof the inquiry skills they develop.

IBL in cognitive neuroscience48

Dr Tom Stafford; Department of Psychology, UoS

A Masters module in Psychology is based on the ideaof ‘teaching questions rather than answers’. Learningis organized in thematic blocks around four questionsthat reflect debates within the discipline. These aregenuinely open questions, in that while theories existas to the answers, they are contested. The questionsare chosen because they link with researchconducted by module tutors. Support for students’inquiries is in the form of a 50:50 mix of staff-led andstudent-led sessions. Staff-led sessions includelectures and seminars while student-led sessions arerun in the way students decide, typically as round-table discussions in which information is presentedand aspects of the questions debated. A feature of themodule is a strong focus on fostering students’ ownquestion-formulating skills, with marks awarded forposing relevant questions via on-line discussion boardafter the four introductory lectures. Other assessedcomponents are: peer-review by students ofcontributions to student-led sessions; individualwritten coursework consisting of two responses to afree choice of two out of the four topic questions. Themodule creates an extremely positive atmospherewith a high level of student engagement andachievement.

Academic staff leading CILASS-supporteddevelopment projects gave a range of reasons forwanting to embed a stronger focus on informationliteracy in IBL. These included recognition that often:

• Students lack IL awareness and skills of relevanceto IBL in their disciplines,

• The importance of IL is not always communicatedeffectively by academic staff,

• IL does not feature explicitly in stated learningoutcomes for modules, and is not assessed,

• IL support across whole curricula is patchy andthere is no commonly agreed framework for itacross degree programmes as a whole,

• Students need to be able to transfer informationliteracy skills developed at university to work andlife beyond the academy.

CILASS-supported information literacyprojectsThe CETL supported development projects in arange of areas including:

• Departmental or degree programme IL ‘audits’ andstrategic development,

• Design of new IL tasks for IBL modules,

• Tailoring of ‘generic’ IL guidance resources tospecific subject areas,

• Creation of new IL resources for specific purposes,e.g. subject information portals,

• Training of student IL mentors for peer supportapproaches,

• Creation of videos/audios about IL in workplace.

Information literacy (IL) can be defined broadly as the ability to find and use informationeffectively in any given context, through any medium whether digital or other. Itencompasses higher-order capabilities including critical evaluation, synthesis, ethicaljudgment and communication as well as technical skills in information searching and theuse of technology. It can be seen as fundamental to successful inquiry and is identified as acore attribute of The Sheffield Graduate.49 For these reasons, working in close partnershipwith the University Library, CILASS adopted a special thematic focus on integrating ILdevelopment explicitly into IBL. The CETL also aimed to support the development of new,inquiry-based approaches to IL education.

CILASS strategies for developinginformation literacy in IBLThe CETL adopted a number strategies specificallyfocusing on the development of IL in IBL. A ‘blended’educational developer post was created, withexpertise in information literacy teaching and aspecific remit to support this aspect of IBLdevelopment. A CETL Liaison Librarian role also wasestablished to facilitate close partnership workingbetween educational development and the Library.An Information Literacy Network group broughttogether information specialists from the Librarywith others from the University’s School ofInformation to run events aimed at stimulatingdiscussion and development of IL, and under theauspices of this group the CETL’s studentambassador network produced a film on IL from thestudent perspective. The CETL also provided supportfor further development of the Library’s role in IBL,including projects focusing on IL learning resourcedevelopment and professional development forlibrarians on the theme of IBL.

Critical appraisal of the publicpresentation of psychologyDr Myles Jones; Department of Psychology, UoS

An inquiry-based approach to information literacy development is adopted in a first-yearundergraduate Psychology module, which is taken byover 200 students. The module aims to introducestudents to the way in which knowledge is createdand disseminated in Psychology and to the kinds ofquestions and problems that attract scientificinquiry and controversy. As part of this there is afocus on developing students’ skills in following upand locating scientific research sources, and theirunderstanding of problems of interpretation that canarise in the dissemination of research knowledge bythe popular media. Working in groups with thesupport of postgraduate tutors, students first searchthe Newsbank database and the BBC News websiteto select a story claiming to be based on an originalresearch source in Psychology. They then trace theoriginal research by searching the Web of Knowledgedatabase and build on this by locating furtherresearch material relating to the topic. Aninformation skills tutorial created by the UniversityLibrary and tailored to the needs of Psychologystudents is used to support this work. With the helpof academic staff, students then review the materialthey have found and produce a critical reflection onthe process in the form of a collaborativepresentation that carries 20% of the module marks.

A ‘stepped’ approach to informationliteracy development at a distanceDr Sabine Little, School of Education and CILASS,UoS.

Information literacy development is embedded into aResearch Methods module on an IBL distance-learning programme in Education for students fromthe Caribbean, as part of the support provided forthem to develop their own research projects. Themodule is taken by over 70 students. An onlinecomponent is designed around four structureddiscussion tasks with a step-by-step approach toencouraging increasing expertise and independencein digital information access and searching, aprocess with which the students are likely to beunfamiliar. For the first discussion, a journal article issupplied online by the academic tutor. For thesecond, students are given a list of bibliographicreferences and locate journal articles themselves bysearching the University Library’s online sources. Forthe third, students are given suggested search termsfor locating material of relevance to the topic. Forthe fourth, students locate relevant literatureindependently and receive feedback from theacademic tutor and peers on the quality and theirevaluation of items identified.

An information literacy modelThe Society of College National and UniversityLibraries ‘Seven Pillars’ model offers a frameworkfor planning IL development tasks and progression.50

Tasks can be designed specifically to foster skillsdevelopment in relation to one or more Pillars.

The SCONUL 7 Pillars model was offered to CILASSIBL curriculum development projects as a tool forplanning IL development in IBL. Academic stafftended to place less emphasis in IBL on Pillars 1 and 6 than on others. Pillar 5, the ability to evaluatesources of information, frequently was consideredby academic staff to be an especially important focus for embedded IL tasks in IBL.

Three inquiry collaboratories – classroomsconceived as research environments – weredesigned to support collaborative student inquiry inarts, humanities and social sciences disciplines. Theaim was to create flexible, information-rich spaces.The collaboratories offer access to a wide variety oftechnologies as an integral part of the learning andteaching experience but aim to avoid beingtechnology-dominated in feel. The first one to becreated was selected by JISC as an exemplar of goodpractice in technology-rich learning space design.52

The use and impact of CILASS spaces indicates thatwhile cutting-edge technologies add value, highimpact features – such as flexible furniture andcollaborative access to ICT – need not necessarily be expensive.

Learning spaces for IBLLearning spaces can be designed specifically to inspire and support innovative IBL, helpingto make good teaching better and to enhance the learning experience. CILASS receivedcapital funding from the national CETL programme to create new spaces for IBL in the newInformation Commons (IC) building at UoS and in another central University location.Evaluation indicated that accommodating inquiry collaboratories in the IC is seen to haveraised the profile of IBL in the institution and to have made a fruitful explicit connectionbetween library services and student-centred educational innovation.

Enthusiastic student feedback about thecollaboratories shows that space design andtechnology, when used creatively, can powerfullyenhance the learning experience. Technology canquickly become a transparent feature effectivelyfacilitating a variety of modes of inquiry, interactionand presentation, and can change the way studentsthink about learning and knowledge-building in theirdiscipline.

Academic staff feedback to CILASS showed thatspace design can stimulate fresh thinking abouteducational design, encourage experimentation withnew IBL practices, and make for closer, research-based partnerships between student peers andbetween students and staff. Staff reported that thecollaboratories could help to promote students’responsibility for learning and enable students tomake the learning and teaching environment theirown, varying seating arrangements and usingdifferent facilities according to need. They also notedthat when students are conducting inquiries usingdigital technologies during contact time, this aspectof the learning process becomes more visible to staff – for example with benefits in terms of staffawareness of students’ level of competence in usingdigital information sources and of their ILdevelopment needs.

SupportSupport that combines technical know-how with anunderstanding of the educational potentials of newspaces and technologies for IBL is needed to enableacademic staff to exploit technology-rich spaces totheir best advantage. Aiming to give examples of ‘whyto use’ technology, as well as ‘how to use’ it, supportstrategies employed by CILASS included a series of‘Unlocking Technology for IBL’ workshops and a widerange of web-based video and printable user-guides.

An inquiry collaboratory for musiccomposition The technology-rich collaboratory concept wasadopted by the Music department for one of its IBLprojects.54 The space was designed to supportcreative interactions between students fromdifferent strands and levels of the Music curriculum(composers, developers and performers from first-year undergraduates to Masters students). A wikiwas used to explore and chart the use of thecollaboratory, with students building up a usefulmanual resource as part of a number of guided tasks which led them to explore fully what thecollaboratory had to offer. The collaboratory hasbroadened the conception of what is possible in thestudio by challenging students to develop new ideasabout technologies in Music, and allowing them toshare and converse about these ideas through the wiki.

Evaluative benchmarking against similar national and international schemes showed that benefitsexperienced at Sheffield were in line with thoseidentified elsewhere, and the pilot served to confirmthe strong contribution that undergraduate researchcan make to the research mission of a university.Students were highly enthusiastic about theirexperiences, reporting enhanced research skills and understanding, improved subject knowledge,increased intellectual confidence and a rewardingsense of enhanced participation in, and contributionto, their discipline.

A summary55 of the international evidence-base onthe impact of undergraduate research opportunityprogrammes points to the positive role these play,including fostering students’ greater independencein learning, increased epistemological sophistication,improved critical thinking, problem-solving andunderstanding of how research is carried out,stronger identification with departmental researchcultures, and development of the ability to assessresearch as a career. Evaluation of UK schemeshighlights the benefits for student apprenticeship inresearch communities of practice.56

Historically, such schemes have been more commonin the sciences than in other discipline areas. TheCILASS scheme demonstrated the value ofopportunities for students in other disciplines, aswell, to experience working with professionalscholars and researchers, either on projects of theirown devising or designed by staff to support existingresearch activities or planned research grantapplications. Some projects resulted in peer-reviewed or other publications, jointly-authored bystaff and students or single-authored by students.

Extra-curricular inquiry and researchCILASS’s initial focus was solely on IBL in the curriculum. However, in response to trends inthe wider sector combined with strong internal institutional interest, the CETL ran a two-year pilot for a new extra-curricular undergraduate research bursary scheme called theSheffield Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE). Based on a competitive applicationprocess, the scheme enabled second-year undergraduates from all Faculties in theUniversity to conduct six- to eight-week research projects over the summer vacation,supervised by academic staff. The scheme included a student-facilitated peer-supportnetwork for the student-researchers and a culminating poster conference.

In 2008-9, Simon Crowther, then a second yearPolitics undergraduate, used the SURE schemeas an opportunity to cross academic disciplineboundaries. He carried out a project examiningcontroversial and important legal issues relatingto the work of the Special Immigration andAppeals Commission. This led to publication inthe Cambridge Student Law Review and in thenational press, and confirmed Simon’s interestin pursuing higher research and a legal career.

Among academic staff supervisors, the scheme wasespecially attractive to relatively early-careerresearchers. Feedback from staff was highly positiveand indicated that students’ research oftencontributed to advancing on-going work with someprojects bringing a fresh, new dimension.

Student-led, extra-curricular IBLIn response to student interest, the CETLexperimented with opening up its IBL small-grantscheme to students as well as to staff, for extra-curricular inquiry projects. Student-led IBL projectactivity was on a small scale but was successful indemonstrating positive impact for students and amodel for a scheme with potential for widerapplication. With support from the CETL, studentstook forward a performance project entitled theatretwo point oh# and created an online journal, NewHistories.

New Histories57

Liam Geoghegan, Department of History, UoS

As described by Liam Geoghegan, an MA student inthe Department of History, this project wasmotivated by the aim to ‘encourage a new kind ofhistory writing – something that was enjoyable, easilyaccessible, wide-ranging and fun to read and write.During my History degree I was often struck by theinaccessibility of academic history writing and howeven ‘popular’ history was just as dry, and less wide-ranging in content. In addition, I noticed that most ofthe assessment for a [student] historian was exactlythe same – technical, academic essays, to be read bya tutor or two, and then never seen again.’ This led tothe creation of a vibrant, fully student-led on-linemagazine that aims to be a truly accessible resourcefor history writers and readers, and that haswidened the research interests of those involved,giving them a new outlet for their own historicalideas.

theatre two point oh#Tom Szekeres, School of Modern Languages; Laura Jenkins, School of English, UoS

theatre two point oh# was an extra-curricular,interdisciplinary, student-led IBL project that aimedto enhance students’ understanding of performanceand at the same time to utilise theatre as a means ofconducting inquiry and sharing ideas, practice andknowledge. The project used digital technologies,collaborative working and innovative documentarymethods to support the creation, performance andevaluation of a performed play. One of the originalideas that inspired the project was to tailor an extra-curricular activity towards academic goals andimaginative ways of problem-solving. The projectexamined the role of CCTV and surveillance systemsin contemporary society. It was purposefully exposedto surveillance itself through use of the internet andrehearsing in a glass-fronted inquiry collaboratoryspace.

Institutional strategies for developingIBLInstitutional strategies that were found to be productive by CILASS in promoting IBL, andsupporting its development, are highlighted here.

The CETL ran an institutional award scheme for excellence in IBL, with awards forindividuals, team and departments, and including a student-nominated strand.

The CETL encouraged creativity, experimentation and ‘risk-taking’ in fundedcurriculum development projects.

Targeting of development grants and support was multi-level, to include:individuals/teams; academic and professional services departments; faculties.

Thematic priorities for development projects were promoted, includingcollaborative inquiry, information literacy in IBL, and the use of digital technologiesin IBL.

IBL was an embedded focus in Learning Teaching and Assessment Strategies atinstitutional, faculty and departmental levels, and championed by seniorinstitutional managers.

Development initiatives were supported by strong cross-professional partnershipworking, between academic staff and professional services staff includinglibrarians, educational developers and learning technologists. Internalcommissioned support and secondments to the CETL helped to spread IBL ideasacross professional services departments.

Student partnership in educational enhancement was an important dimension ofthe CETL’s approach. A student ambassador network for IBL with participants fromeach academic department in the CETL’s core faculties was co-facilitated by astudent and a member of staff.

Educational developer/researchers acted as ‘winged messengers’ between staffdeveloping new IBL initiatives in different parts of the institution, and connectors ofpeople with shared purposes and interests.

The CETL established and coordinated formal networks and special interestgroups, and fostered informal networking among academic staff and betweenacademic and professional services colleagues. Creation of network connectionsexternal to the institution were encouraged.

The design of new IBL collaboratory spaces was learning and teaching focused, anddeveloped through a process of close partnership working between academic andprofessional services staff.

The new spaces were used for staff development about IBL as well as teaching.Support for new users provided blended technical/educational developmentsupport.

Students as partners in educationalenhancementThe CILASS Student Ambassador Network was avibrant and powerful mechanism for facilitatingdevelopment in IBL at the University.

CILASS student ambassadors produced films on IBLand information literacy, jointly coordinated annualSheffield Staff-Student Conferences on IBL,contributed to the evaluation of CILASS-funded IBLprojects, ran workshops in academic departments,conducted research into the student experience,contributed to national conferences and acted asinvited advisers to other HEIs. Peer workshops theyled on topics such as group-working were seen to beespecially effective in communicating messages toother students. Ambassadors reported very strongbenefits for their employability profiles and includedCETL work in portfolios submitted to the University’s‘Sheffield Graduate Award’ for extra-curricularachievement.

Developing IBL Institutional strategies

The CETL promoted, supported and carried out scholarship of teaching andlearning and pedagogical research for IBL. It also carried out institutional researchon staff and students’ perspectives on the relation between research andteaching.58

New IBL initiatives were evaluated using a ‘Theory of Change’ evaluation approachdeveloped at UoS.59

The CETL provided wide variety of IBL-related events, characterized by inclusion ofinformal and social networking approaches and strong student participation. Someevents were designed specifically for professional services staff.

Dissemination-of-practice strategies included case studies, briefing papers and aninternal newsletter with an informal flavour and with strong student visibility.

‘Top 10’ messages about IBL fromCILASS evaluation and research

IBL can have a powerful impact on students’ intellectual, professional and personal development. Studentsexperience benefits including greater enjoyment and engagement in learning and knowledge-building, andenhanced capabilities in areas including: self-directed inquiry; information literacy; communication;collaboration; use of digital technologies.

There are benefits in introducing students to IBL at the start of students’ experience of universitylearning, in areas including fostering enthusiasm for study and development of self-confidence. This also allows positive norms relating to IBL to be established early.

As well as developing students’ subject knowledge and ‘transferable’ skills, IBL can in a positive waychallenge limiting beliefs and expectations that they may have about their role in learning and knowledge-building.

Approaches to IBL that offer students opportunities to formulate their own questions and lines of inquirycan be especially powerful.

Students value the relevance of IBL to life beyond university. IBL addresses the expectations of employersby providing a context for the development of a wide range of skills for the workplace and lifelonglearning.

IBL can be applied flexibly in different ways across different contexts of undergraduate and postgraduateeducation. The CETL demonstrated its value in pure and applied disciplines, and in interdisciplinarylearning, from the first undergraduate year upwards. IBL can be used successfully with large as well assmall cohorts of students.

Provision of carefully-designed orientation and support in response to student needs is essential forproductive IBL. Students may struggle if appropriate process support is not in place. For example, it isvaluable to embed information literacy development explicitly into IBL, in the form of information literacytasks and assessments.

Learning spaces can be designed specifically to support IBL, with positive impacts for both students andstaff and closer partnership relations between them. Web 2.0 technologies can be effective in supportingstudent-led inquiry in ways that foster autonomy and creativity.

When promoting and extending IBL across different academic and professional disciplines it is important that a broad-based definition is used. At the same time there is a need to communicate thedistinctiveness of IBL in terms of the central role of the inquiry question and process in the studentexperience and the implications of this for learning design.

Extra-curricular IBL opportunities, in the form of IBL projects or research bursary schemes, benefitstudents and promote an integrated perspective on university provision for a ‘research-led’ or ‘research-engaged’ student experience. IBL can play a key role in university strategy to strengthen teaching-researchlinkages.
