The Shalom

Rabbi Heifetz’s Monthly Word

Dear Friends,

It was a tremendous pleasure to cele-brate the High Holidays with so many of you at Oseh Shalom. My heart leapt a bit--with happiness--when I saw each famil-iar face and family group enter the sanc-tuary. I felt a hint of sadness, too, since this was my last High Holiday season as the rabbi of Oseh Shalom.

I very much intend to savor the time with our congregation over the year ahead. My adult education classes will offer some great occasions to connect this year, and I hope as many of you as possible will join in.

For example, I'm offering an Adult B'nei Mitzvah Class, starting on Sun-day November 6th. It's a perfect opportunity for Jewish adults (whether by conversion or birth) to learn or refresh their memory of synagogue basics for Shabbat services, to dive into study of a weekly Torah por-tion, to make friends from the Oseh Shalom community, and to cele-brate and renew commitment to Jewish life. I'll meet with the class ap-proximately ten times, on Sundays at noon starting this fall. Together as a group, we'll make arrangements for each individual to learn Torah chanting. We'll hold the Adult B'nei Mitzvah celebration itself in syna-gogue on Saturday morning, May 13th during services, when we'll also dedicate our newly repaired Torah scroll. If you're interested in partici-pating, or if you have any questions whatsoever, please let me know. Please spread the word!

As the year continues, I’ll also teach a 3-session class on ‘Aging & Elder-ing in Judaism’ (Sundays from 10-11:30 AM, Dec. 4 & 18, Jan. 8). In early 2017, I’ll offer a five part class entitled ‘Like a Tree of Life: the Branches & Genres of Classic Jewish Wisdom’ (Sundays 10-11:30 AM, Feb. 26, March 5 & 12, April 23 & 30).

I hope to see you for some of these classes, and at many other upcom-ing services, gatherings, and celebrations at Oseh Shalom.

Best wishes for a great rest of the fall season,

Rabbi Doug

From the Executive Director Welcome to the November issue of the Shalom. I would like to personally thank all the volunteers who helped make not only our services so lovely, but who worked so hard to make the process of High Holiday set-up and deal-ing with tickets seem so ef-fortless. It’s not always. Our office could not do what we do without the help of so

many marvelous volunteers.

Looking back, I’d like to share what other volun-teers made possible in time for the High Holidays. The lighting of the Sanctuary is now 100% LED. Steve Klein, Stephen Schoenfeld, and Gary Mag-nus, using a rented 16 foot ladder, replaced all the recessed lighting over the course of two days. Rich Burger did some long needed patch work that re-quired that very long ladder as well. Phil Victor and Steve Klein replaced burned out lights in the Social Hall, and much more over the summer.

Last month I shared that in an effort to make our-selves more accessible and inclusive we planned to add ramps in time for the High Holidays. The Cate-gory 2 ADA approved ramps are taking some get-ting used to, but they are the perfect “accessory” to our bima, the Torah table's platform, also mak-ing curbside drop off for loved ones in front of the main entrance much easier. Irv Miller, who re-searched and helped select these ramps, built a support for the ten foot ramp to the bima, so it would be firmer. When we began testing out the long ramp, it, well, squeaked. The fact that the ramps can be folded up and stored elsewhere is really wonderful.

Which brings me to the unexpected, something I’ve never had to do in the rush for the High Holi-days. We did an emergency repair on one of our Torahs. One of the Torah handles broke off during a Religious School class, when Rabbi was showing the students the scroll. Good thing we just hired a sofer for our upcoming Torah renovation project. We purchased a new pair of etzei chayim (the wood handles for Torah scrolls) and the sofer, Jef-frey Schulevitz, installed them for us right before Rosh Hashanah. That was a good thing for another reason – we had a triplets' bnei mitzvah this past month and each of the three wanted to hold one of those scrolls during the service.

I also think it was wonderful that on Simhat Torah, to kick-off the Torah renovation project, the scroll we are starting to repair was opened for all to see.

Continued onto next page

Another month! I hope the busy High Holiday season left you some time for reflection, con-templation and spiritual renewal.

Congratulations to everyone on our staff, on the High Holiday Committee, everyone who helped with the wildly successful religious school pro-grams, and everyone else who gave so gener-ously of their time and talent to make the ser-vices especially meaningful this year. The strength of our community is most evident when we are all together.

Now that the High Holidays are past, our next priority is the rabbinical search. The rabbinical search process has begun, and you will be re-ceiving regular updates. Andy and I are delight-ed to announce that Brad Sachs has agreed to chair the committee. He brings experience, thoughtfulness, and a deep understanding of our congregation to the process, and we could not be more pleased.

Our first event is a meeting on Sunday, Novem-ber 6, at 9:30 a.m., and is open to all. We will be dividing into small groups to talk about our priorities. Look for a survey, coming soon, to help us identify the qualities and strengths you believe are most important. We look forward to seeing as many of you as possible.

The future of Oseh Shalom belongs to each of us. The search process is only one example of the project-based volunteerism Andy and I talked about in our High Holiday appeal. We en-courage you to come, take your part in any as-pect of synagogue life that has meaning to you, and believe you will find a satisfying connection to each other and our community.

Happy 5777.

Sixty columns will be repaired – in this interactive project, which can involve every member of the congregation who wishes to participate. You’ll be learning more about the project this month. We’ve plans to feature our sofer on what we’re piloting as “Oseh TV” – using our live streaming in truly creative ways. Watch for details in the eNews and our Social Media – on Facebook and on our website.

Before concluding, I would like to thank all those who have helped in the office: Mona Davis, Lisa Karpf, Doris Kirschbaum, Mariyan Kolev, Pauline Pivowar, and Shelley Sypes.

Shalom everyone, This year, the Education Com-mittee worked with the Reli-gious Committee to create a new service option during the High Holy Days. While the ser-vices have since come and gone, I cannot stop thinking about the beauty of our family tent service. So many factors came together at just the right time in order to make our new

service a sold-out success.

First, there was the tremendous dedication of our Education Committee. They gathered information nearly a year ago, and realized that many of our religious school families were opting to go to other services at other congregations. They wanted a more kid-oriented service that allowed everyone to be together as a family. To find a solution, we had to begin thinking outside the box, or in reality, out-side our synagogue walls. And this is where the open-mindedness of our Religious Committee be-came involved. Both committees agreed that our Aleph and Bet traditional services needed to re-main, but we needed to create a third service that catered to a young family styled service.

Our traditional programming of music, crafts, and a few light prayers in the classrooms was not going to cut it anymore. We heard our parents’ desires for the family to be together as a unit during services, but also realized children running around the main sanctuary during our traditional services was not an option. Thus came the idea for a tent service out-side. We have such a beautiful piece of property

News From School with Renee

and the perfect spot to put a tent.

Next, we had to think about who would run the service and what would it entail? Fortunately, we have a wonderful teaching staff in our religious school. Our music teacher, Stephanie Weishaar, knew a cantor who works with several camps and who is used to leading family services. As anyone who attended our tent service can attest, Rachel Wolman was a perfect fit.

The final piece to the puzzle came to our religious school as a wonderful surprise. We knew funding a family tent service would be difficult. Renting a tent and affording a talented cantor was some-thing we knew we had to figure out. Then, one of our families bestowed upon us the Eskin Endow-ment in honor of Ed Cheng’s mother. The endow-ment is specifically meant for unique and innova-tive programming. It is through this endowment and hopefully future donations to this fund that we hope to continue this tradition.

L’Shana Tova,

Renee Richards

New Synagogue-wide “One Book” Read Explores a Search for Jewish Roots The Lifelong Learning Committee has selected An Orphan in History: One Man's Triumphant Search for his Jew Roots by the late Paul Cowan for our Oseh Shalom “One Book” synagogue-wide read. After growing up as a fully assimilated Jew, Paul Cowan embarked in his mid-thirties upon a journey to discover and appreciate his true identity and heritage. This “orphan in history” relates his search for these roots, detailing the path he took from his Park Avenue home to nineteenth-century Lithuania to a contemporary Israeli kibbutz, leading to remarkable personal discoveries that will move everyone who has yearned to know more about their past.

Join us on Sunday, November 13, 2016 at 10 AM for a book talk brunch led by Dr. Eliyana Adler, Associate Profes-sor of History and Jewish Studies at Penn State. She is a historian of the modern Jewish experience in Eastern Europe with particular interests in the history of religion, education, and gender studies. New copies of the book (originally published in 2002 by Jewish Lights Publishing) are available on www.amazon.com and from Barnes and Noble (www.bn.com ) for $16.99. Used copies are offered for less. Please contact Marla Singer (301-725-5338) or at [email protected] if you need help obtaining a copy.

Social Action/Caring Shalom. I hope everyone had a wonderful Holi-day Season. Now, we can take a breath until Ha-nukkah! While things are a little bit slow, please take a moment to consider doing a Mitzvah. Be-ing part of the Social Action Committee/Caring and Support Committee is a wonderful way to help others in our Oseh Community. You need not be present at meetings to be a part of this committee. Please go to http://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0c48a5a92ea1fc1-

oneclick if you are at all interested in helping out. A lot of the ways of helping, listed there, are on an as-needed basis, such as providing a ride, making a meal or a simple phone call, or an elder visit, just to name a few. More details are provid-ed on the website. If you are interested, need help with signing up, or have general questions, don't hesitate to contact me. I am also excited to announce that we have a few new additions to our Committee! Welcome to Jen Queen, Jeni Wamaling (both new members to Oseh!), Lysie Sarantos, Sonya Everett, Vernel Thomas, and Katy Clemens. We appreciate your joining us and look forward to working with you this year. Our next major event will take place on Decem-ber 11, which will be our annual Wrapping Party. We will adopt a family from LARS and will collect and wrap presents for them. Please look for de-tails via the December Shalom as well as the Enews and other email communications. This is a wonderful way to help others in our local commu-nity. B'Shalom, Felicia Friedman Social Action/Caring and Support Chairperson 240-786-6274(Home), 410-707-0749(Cell), [email protected]

Applications for Oseh Shalom's 2017

Camp JRF Scholarships

Oseh Shalom is again offering financial assistance to help families send their kids to the Jewish Recon-structionist Federation's summer camp--Camp JRF--in the Pocono Mountains in Pennsylvania. It's been shown that attending a Jewish summer camp can be a truly transformative experience. All of the Oseh kids who have attended Camp JRF have had a won-derful time!

Our scholarships cover a portion of Camp JRF's cost for families in financial need. The amount we can provide depends on how many families apply for as-sistance, their level of need, and the current amount in our scholarship fund. Since our fund is supported entirely by voluntary contributions from Oseh mem-bers, we encourage everyone to make a contribu-tion, large or small, to the fund.

Families seeking financial assistance should fill out a confidential application, which is reviewed by Oseh Shalom's scholarship committee. Please contact John Finedore ([email protected]) to obtain a 2017 application form. The deadline for submitting this form is January 15, 2017. Our scholarship com-mittee will make funding decisions at that time. Preference is given to families applying for support for the first time.

Families who apply for an Oseh scholarship should also apply for financial aid directly from Camp JRF. In addition, first-time campers should apply for a grant from "One Happy Camper," which provides grants (that are not needs-based) of up to $1,000 to children attending an overnight Jewish camp for the first time. To apply for a Camp JRF summer session and for more information about Camp JRF's financial aid and "One Happy Camper," visit the Camp's web-site, campjrf.org. Camp JRF's summer sessions do fill up, so we encourage you to act early!

"To-rah or Not To-rah – Where Do You Stand? Give Us Four Weeks and We'll Give You 4,000 Years"

Torah study course by Rabbi Gordon Fuller Mondays, November 7, 14, 21 and 28, 2016

Location in Columbia, Maryland to be determined

This is an introductory course for those who'd like to know more about Torah and how to study it. The class will be a participatory, discussion-style class rather than a lecture. Participants' questions, thoughts, and desires are more important than the course outline. This is a learning journey we will take together. Session I - Where do we get the authority to "wrestle" with Torah? Who wrote the Torah and when? How do I make it my own?

Session II - How are Torah scrolls made? What are the rules and customs around them? When are they read and how does the weekly cycle work? Can anyone read them or have an aliyah?

Session III - Who are the traditional commentators and how do I learn/study about them? Who are the modern ones? What is the "Parsha Project" anyway?

Session IV - How do I make Torah part of my everyday life without feeling/becoming "religious"? What is the dif-ference between Written Law and Oral law? What is Midrash? Rabbi Gordon Fuller relocated to Maryland about a year ago to be closer to his children and grandchildren. He has been teaching and preparing b’nei mitzvah students at the Oseh Shalom religious school. Previously, he lived pri-marily in Chicago and Texas, where, among other activities, he was a congregational rabbi for 11 years and a Jew-ish educator at the Jewish Federation of Greater Dallas. The fee for the course is $60 for members of Oseh Shalom and $75 for non-members. To reserve a space in the class, please send your check payable to Oseh Shalom at 7515 Olive Branch Way, Laurel, MD 20707.

SCRIP AND GIANT GIFT CARD

PROGRAMS HAVE MERGED For those of you who are using Scrip—thanks a million. For those who haven’t, we hope you try it out soon. For those who have been buying Giant Gift Cards through Heidi, thanks a million too. Starting this month, the Giant Gift Card program is being rolled into the Scrip program. This will not change anything for those who have been buying the cards other than how Oseh orders the cards. With this merger, we are now offering all members the opportunity to put standing orders in with Scrip. You can tell me what you want to order on a monthly basis and then you can send in a pay-ment every month or authorize Oseh to make an automatic withdrawal from your bank. If you want to set up automatic withdrawals, contact Kelly for the form. If you are a Giant Card participant and want to add to your order, please let me know. You can adjust your standing order (maybe you want a Shell gas card) or just purchase additional cards as needed.
