STEPHEN MINISTRY CHURCH

Stephen Ministers are trained lay caregivers who provide emotional and spiritual care to per-sons who are experiencing difficulties in their lives—hospitalization, loss of a loved one, loss of job, or any other crisis situation. This is care in addition to the care the pastor gives. If you are interested in having a Stephen Minister, fill out one of the slips in the pew rack and put it in the offering plate or hand it to the minister, one of the Stephen Leaders, or Tom Lee.

A STEWARDSHIP FAIRY TALE FOR REAL

Many years ago not all that far from here, there was a small, but growing, Methodist Church whose membership worshiped and worked in harmony, sharing their hurts and joys as they dili-gently sought to follow the teachings of Jesus. They shared a love of Jesus and were proud of it. Their hard work and love for each other attracted the attention of a wealthy businessman who had moved to the area. He joined the church and immediately began donating generous sums to the church’s ministries. He helped plan and largely funded expensive church projects. He tried to be inconspicuous in his giving, but to a membership accustomed to counting pennies to meet its stewardship goals, it was obvious from whose pockets the surge in giving came. The new member was shown great deference and he shared in the other members’ happiness of all that was accomplished. After five years, his business interests required him to move. Before he left, he made certain that no obligations were left unpaid. Alas, the following year the church faced a financial crisis. Even with more members, giving was less than five years earlier! After much study, the church leaders realized that they and the membership had relaxed in their giv-ing, confident that someone else would “pick up the slack.” This story had a happy ending, but it took a number of years and a lot of hard work. The moral of this tale is that each of us has a role and a responsibility in our church. Each of us is called to do all we can and give all we can, regardless of what anyone else is doing or giving. For the Love of Jesus, Jerry Farmer Chairperson, Stewardship Committee
