President’s Message Dawn Schneider

Happy New Year All!

Ok so truth be told— I’m not a winter person. To me it just means losing the flip flops and hooking up the trickle charger to my 964…. BUT it also means a fresh start and all kinds of new opportunities for the Club!

We had such a wonderful holiday party at Oyster Point on December 15th. Fifty of our members got together for a beautiful and fun evening. The food was delicious and the drinks were flowing! Congratulations again to Brian Nowell and Bill Krieg for being recognized as such significant contributors to Jersey Shore. It’s members like these that make this Club so special. A big thank you as well to both Bodymotion and Porsche Monmouth for their great door prizes!

I mentioned at the party that the Board is looking for feedback/suggestions from the Club on activities you’d like us to support. Our open board meeting at Woody’s in November unfortunately was a wash out. So we’re still looking for your input! We want to make sure that the 2019 plan is both interesting and relevant to our members. While some of the “tried and true” programs will definitely be anniversaried (ie the hugely successful Clam Bake at Donovans), we want to insure that we’re listening to YOU and venturing into new and different activities. Since many of our favorites in-clude beautiful drives and beautiful meals, let us know where you’ve been that would make for a fun day trip for the Club. Email me ([email protected]) or call me (609-259-2740) with any recommendations you may have for activities or simply with gen-eral suggestions. I really look forward to hearing from you! Please note that all areinvited—ESPECIALLY new members—to the Rolex 24 afternoon at Woody’s onSaturday 1/26 from 3-5. It will be a good opportunity to watch the race kickoff whilesocializing with fellow members. Please join us!

This year we’ll also focus on Zone 1 activities. Jersey Shore is one of 17 Clubs that comprise Zone 1 of the Porsche Club of America. The Zone has its own Board and many of its own events. Some of our members have participated previously and have nothing but great things to say! This year the Zone has tentative plans for fabu-lous trips to luxury hotels in both Vermont and Maine. You will be receiving details from PCA as they are released, and Jersey Shore will keep you apprised as well!

One last note…..We are always looking for people in the Club who can help with special projects. We promise not to overwhelm—not looking for big commitments--but please do let us know if you have the time to provide a hand to the Board on occa-sion.

Stay warm, all --- it will be Spring before you know it!

Dealer’s Perspective By Scott Patterson

[email protected]

Happy New Year! I hope everyone had a very merry and festive holiday season. I cannot believe we have been in our new home for 2 months and that it is now 2019. Time really does fly when you are having fun. Since we last “talked” there has been some excitement at Porsche, and I am sure you have been following along. First of all, the new 911 has been revealed. I stayed up until 11PM on that late November evening to watch the event live. First impressions? I am impressed and cannot wait to see it in person. The more robust and muscular, wide body look is stunning. I especially love the shots of the car from overhead which really accentuate the dramatic shape, truly lovely. The staggered diameter wheels & tires just finish the shape off perfectly. It just seems like it should have been that way all the time. The rear of the car has a very clean and modern look, now carrying the full-length LED light strip, immediately recognizable as a Porsche even from a distance. Many eyes are drawn immediately to the 3rd brake light which is vertically positioned along the central air intake. I like it as a unique and identifying design element. One of the chief Porsche designers called it a pause symbol – fitting for a brake light I think. Inside the 992 we have the Porsche Advanced Cockpit. I love the five buttons below the PCM, they remind of toggle switches found on certain iconic sports cars from the 60s. Those buttons provide direct access to some key powertrain and chassis functions. The element that has many people talking is the new gear selector lever. I rarely use the gear selector as a mechanism to shift through the gears manually preferring to use the paddles on our PDK equipped cars. I am sure we will all get used to it quickly. The Carrera S and 4S will be the first 992 sports cars to arrive, we expect them here in late summer. The configura-tors are live on Porsche USA, go have fun! If you come up with a special build, feel free to send me your Porsche code. There are new exterior and interior colors, as well as some great new technology to explore. I can’t wait to try out Wet Mode when we go for training! Speaking of what is live on the configurator, the 2019 Macan and Macan S are also now on the Porsche site. The base Macan has been up for a while but the Macan S just went active last week. The Macan has been an incredibly successful Porsche, selling more than 350,000 units in just 4 years. As I say on almost a daily basis, it is our everyday sports car! The new design accentuates the width of the vehicle. The new front end has larger side and central air in-takes and combined with the new standard LED headlights, these features help create an even more dynamic appear-ance. The rear now has a full length light strip similar to the one introduced on the 2019 Cayenne. A visually exciting new Macan, as Porsche has been saying “Choose Thrilling!” Apart from the styling changes we also have new alumi-num front suspension (previously steel), updated engines, upgraded braking systems and interior changes highlighted by the 10.9” HD touchscreen display. The 2019 Macan, expected to arrive in late Spring, will help insure that the Macan remains as the only choice for a driver’s SUV. If you have yet to stop into the new store, please do so and ask for me. I will be happy to give you a tour. Happy New Year everyone! I look forward to seeing you here at the store or out on the road driving your Porsche of choice.

WORLDWIDE RELEASE AND INTRODUCTION PORSCHE 2019 GT4

by Mike Bavaro

On Thursday afternoon January 3,2019 Porsche Motorsports North America unveiled its new-est race car at Daytona International Speedway. The Porsche GT4 Clubsport was presented to the press and race teams at a lavish press party before the Roar IMSA test event. Bodymotion Racing took delivery of their new Porsche along with 7 other teams. These first cars are the only in existence and will make their race debut later this month at the Daytona track. The Michelin Pilot Challenge will take place prior to the Rolex 24 on January 25. During Roar testing this past weekend Bodymotions’ new car ran in the top three during practice runs. All drivers commented on how well the new aerodynamic chassis improvements stuck the car to the track. “the car was rock solid all around the speed way topping 168 mph at the start finish line” commented Bodymotion driver Marc Miller. With 40 more horsepower and aero improvements the team is optimistic on its chances to repeat its 2016 victory at the historic Daytona racetrack.

HAVANA OR BUST

by Margaret & Mike Bavaro

Being children of the 50’s and 60’s we share many common historical points in time. Kennedy’s assassination probably ranks one and the Moon landing # two. Regardless of ranking many of us remember the cold war times, even though we may have all grown up in different towns and states with different and widely varying backgrounds. That constant feeling that someone was watching and that at any given time a bright flash may be seen ( but…don’t look at it) yeah right, and “ get un-der your desk”! still haunts us. That one line says it all, like the desk will offer protection against the nuclear holocaust about to rain down on us like the playground scene from the Terminator movie.

So curiosity got Margaret and I and we felt almost “obligated” to check out this foreign country that threatened our way of life. The way Cuba was described by actor Lee Strasberg who, played the gangster Hyman Roth in the Godfather, it was a paradise, a playground, a Las Vegas in the tropics. As he stated in the movie “ it is swankier than Vegas”. So, Margaret and I just had to go, after all those cigars I have smoked over the years, it was a no brainer.

We went by boat, a cruise ship from Tampa with friends, all children of the 1950-60 era, so were many of the passengers. We were greeted in the harbor with sights of old fortifications, ancient can-nons, and a port right out of the 1920’s. The architecture was of centuries old design and the actual building looked the same age of construction. It soon became apparent to us as no one had used a paint brush in centuries. In fact, most of the building’s had lost their roofs many decades ago.

Same is true of the cars that we hear and read about, literally they lost their roofs and were con-verted to open top. Not even convertibles with a soft top, just cut the roof off. Back in the sixties and seventies these cars began to wear out and break. The roads are barely paved horse paths, so we were sure the first thing to go was the sus-pensions and axles. Most cars we observed were mid to late 50’s, the sus-pensions were clearly replaced with truck or wagon type as they bounced like buckboards down even the smoothest of streets, and there were only a few “smooth” roads in downtown Ha-vana. (cont.)

HAVANA OR BUST

by Margaret & Mike Bavaro (cont.)

As the car and truck power plants wore out, replacements from America were not to be had. Most of the cars had diesel engines from boats and generators installed as replacements. The interi-ors were very nice for the most part, upholstery appears to be a strong trade in Cuba.

It soon became apparent to us that the economy has two speeds. The top level, business men, ho-tel and casino owners, the relatively very rich had one currency, and then the rest, working class and unemployed were everywhere and had their own currency that was barely 20% of the others. You can’t, or don’t own your own business in Cuba, you propose one, convince and pay officials that you can guarantee them a profit, then you work and they take. Kind of makes you feel proud to be an American.

The restaurants were fair at best, the stories are priceless, the cars were fun to see, the rum and cigars have no rival in the world. If you decide to make the trip, do your homework, hold onto your wallet, don’t wander off alone. Make sure you go see the extravagant show at the Tropicana, you’ll swear you see Ricky and Lucy in lavish costumes dancing to the full 50’s orchestra.

Margaret and I are glad we went, we have no desire to return. Although it would have been nice to see the rest of the island. Maybe someday when enough cash flows into the right hands, it will be the paradise Hyman Roth said it would be.

Member News Historic Sportscar Racing - 24 Hour Classic - Paul Solk

For those of you unfamiliar HSR stands for Historic Sportscar Racing. One of the finest organi-zations out there and one of the few times you can see the classic race cars so many of us grew up watching being driven to their limits on track. One of the events they organize is the 24 hour Clas-sic. You will experience everything from one of a kind $10M vintage Shelby Daytona Coupes to Lo-tus, to Lola to open wheel prototypes and of course Porsche’s on track for 24 hours straight at Day-tona International Speedway. It is a weeklong mecca of motorsports on the banking and infield at the World Center of Racing. One thing to point out is the sheer size of Daytona. For those of us who have only seen it on TV, it is a different entity entirely when you see it firsthand.

This is not your typical 24 hour endurance event but 6 run groups broken up into four sessions of an hour each through the night. For Bodymotion and the team this meant a 6pm session, a mid-night session, a 6am session through the sunrise and another session at noon to finish off the event. The logistics alone make this a challenge with limited rest for the drivers and team over the course of the race. It also means adapting to changing temperatures and conditions and getting the setup just right for the Bodymotion cars entered into the event. One of the great things about HSR is if you have a car you want to race they will find a run group for you. This meant Bodymotion was able to run 3 of it’s PCA GTB1 cars in the HSR classic 24 hour event in the modern production group. (cont.)

For Geoff and the team it also meant plenty of coffee through the night.

As with any event, the team faced challenges throughout the event but did whatever it took to kept their cars on track. Seeing the Bodymotion GTB1 cars running together on the banks of Dayto-na was quite the site, especially mingled in with sportscar history all around them.

While everyone would love to win at Daytona, that’s not necessarily what this event is about. Due to run groups there can be some fairly large discrepancies in performance and speed however the one thing that is consistent across the entire field was the experience and the smiles. Where else can you sit down for lunch next to some of the most famous and experienced drivers in the world and then watch them put living history through its paces on track a few minutes later. For me it was my first experience at the HSR classic and I can’t tell you the memories I left with. (cont.)

Huge thanks to Bodymotion for hosting me and for anyone on the fence about attending I can tell you it is one of the most unique, exciting and memory filled events you can attend. Would I recom-mend everyone experience it once, absolutely, do I plan on racing under the lights through the night after experiencing it first hand, you bet!!! As the race season winds down and those of us bit by the track bug go into winter hibernation and our states of depression waking up without a race to watch this was certainly a wonderful way to wind down the season with Bodymotion where we all enjoy being together most which is at the track!

Finally, with all this track talk, let’s start to get excited about next year!!! We encourage everyone in JSRPCA to come and experience THEIR Porsche on track the way it was meant to be driven. Our HPDE day will be in August at NJMP and we look forward to seeing you all there!! Look forward to our next installment of “Track Times” after the PCA 48 hour shootout in Sebring in less than 60 days…

Member News - 2018 Zone 1 Fall Getaway A Weekend to Remember! By Dean & Fran Kelly

More than 60 PCA members traveled from all corners of Zone 1 for a weekend of driving, dining and laughter on Lake Chautauqua in western New York, October 12-14. It was the second consecu-tive Fall Getaway weekend, a time to bond over our love of Porsches, good food and fun adventures.

Base camp for the weekend was the newly opened Chautauqua Harbor Hotel, a beautiful lake front property with stunning views, outdoor fire pits and even a mini putting green. The first night we toured the Lucille Ball/Desi Arnaz museum in Lucy’s hometown of Jamestown, NY, offering a per-sonal look at the lives and careers of the TV comedy legends. We loved the recreations of Lucy and Ricky’s NYC apartment – and the behind-the scenes history of the Desilu Studios. Dinner was served in a recreation of the Tropicana Club where they played the I Love Lucy episode when Lucy learns to drive a car (of course).

The next day, our Porsche caravan headed out of the parking lot for a scenic drive to Southern Shore Winery in North East, PA. Just over the border, this historic winery was established in 1864 and, under the Mazza family, has been producing a wide variety of local wines for more than 40 years. We enjoyed a sample of their best wines in the original stone wine cavern, then headed upstairs for a tasty buffet lunch. Bob Mazza, founder of Mazza Vineyards, entertained us with tales from his racing days in the 1990s (starting with a Porsche) through his decades with Sports Car Club of America (SCCA). (cont. next page)

“Our favorite part of the Getaway Weekend is the tremendous amount of new friend-ships we make, connections that transcend geographic boundaries and professional

backgrounds. Although our love of Porsches is what brings us together, our love of fun times, good food and road adventure is what sustains those friendships well beyond

the last good-byes in the parking lot."

Member News - 2018 Zone 1 Fall Getaway A Weekend to Remember! By Dean & Fran Kelly - cont.

With some free time in the afternoon, some members visited the National Comedy Center, a new interactive museum with 50+ immersive exhibits that tell the story of comedy in America, from Charlie Chaplin to David Chapelle. Others stopped by Lucille Ball’s childhood home … and a few of us made our way to Southern Tier, a local craft brewery.

That evening, our group enjoyed dinner at the hotel – lots of great conversation and new friend-ships. Many regions were represented– car enthusiasts from Toronto and Montreal, Syracuse and Rochester, down to Northern Jersey and the Jersey Shore regions. Although we came from different places, we all had one thing in common…

On Sunday morning, the group went out for a spectacular sightseeing cruise and lunch on the Summer Wind yacht, touring beautiful Lake Chautauqua on a cool, crisp fall day. The captain enter-tained us with stories about the area’s history – and a fair share of corny jokes.

The inaugural Fall Getaway was held in Saratoga Springs in the Fall of 2017… and the Lake Chau-tauqua weekend continued the tradition of a well-planned and thoroughly enjoyable car-centric ex-perience. There is already talk about planning the 2019 weekend… possibly in Maine. Don’t miss the opportunity to sign up! We’re hopeful we can get more representation from Jersey Shore ….

Holiday Dinner - December 15th

This year’s party was again held at the Oyster Point Hotel in Red Bank NJ. Fifty members and guests enjoyed drinks and appetizers from 6:30 to 7:30 PM followed by dinner at 7:30 PM. As usual there

were door prizes and awards after dinner. A great time was had by all.
