The MS Society of Canada Invites…
You to be an Astronomer for a Day
The MS Society is hosting its seventh Annual Family Day at H.R MacMillan
Space Centre. This is a great opportunity for people affected by MS to
bring a child/children (up to the age of 18) for a day of fun, snacks,
and space exploration.
Come join us and explore the wonders of space at the H.R. MacMillan Space
Centre. Both child and adult will have a great time exploring the different
galleries: from kids space to our world, participants will be laughing, learn-
ing and star gazing! The MS Society will provide families with free admis-
sion, snacks and prizes. To ensure a spot, interested parties must RSVP.
Details:
This exploration will take place Sunday, May 15, 2011 at H.R. MacMillan
Space Centre (1100 Chestnut Street, Vancouver). You can arrive anytime
between 10:30am—3:30pm. Chapter staff will be available to greet
your family and provide admission tickets and snack bags!
All interested parties are asked to RSVP to Sheila Israel either by calling
604. 689.3144 or by email at [email protected] by Friday, May 6,
2011 as space is limited.
Please indicate the number of people attending, the age(s) of the child/

MS NEWS AND UPDATES
Daily Living with MS
Q :
My doctor told me I should try to stay active and exercise but I’m afraid that by getting
my body overheated by exercise I’ll make my MS worse. What should I do?
A :
Exercise is very important. Performing exercise REGULARLY can improve physical, men-
tal and overall well-being. More importantly, for persons with MS it can also improve
your energy, balance, mobility, range of motion, stability and endurance.
If at all possible, an exercise program, incorporating stretching and suited to your level
of fitness and ability, should be developed with your physiotherapist. If you do not have
access to a physiotherapist through your Clinic or local health facility, I would suggest
you work with a qualified person at a reputable local fitness center, who will help you
devise an appropriate program for you. If there is no centre in your community, try the
gym teacher at one of your area’s schools. S/he should have access to the publications
on adapted physical activities produced by the Active Living Alliance for Canadians with
a Disability, which would help in arranging your stretching and exercise plan. As well,
the MS Society’s excellent publication ―Everybody Stretch‖ has illustrations of exercises
which can be performed standing, sitting or lying down – something for everyone. Two
websites which have good information and useful links to various physical activity guide-
lines are www.hc-sc.gc.ca and www.bodybreak.com
It is true that you might become overheated during exercise. This will not cause a re-
lapse of your MS, but could cause your symptoms to ―act up‖ temporarily. To help avoid
this, always have water with you (to drink, or to spritz over you), take regular rest
breaks, and build up gradually to your optimum level of performance.
Making regular exercise part of your lifestyle can produce long-lasting and immeasura-
ble benefits. Go for it!
