The Seven Sacraments
There are seven sacraments of the Catholic Church. According to the Catholic religion,
these signs were instituted by Jesus and entrusted to the Church as wonderful gifts for us
all. Each sacrament is Jesus continuing His ministry through the Church. What Jesus did
on earth He still does through the sacraments.
Sacrament means ‘mystery’, the mystery in this case being something that is known only to
God.
The sacraments are an efficacious sign of grace.
Efficacious means ‘effective’, Catholics believe that the sacraments are effective in that
they do what they say they do. Quite simply, they believe that they work.
Sign refers to earthly objects, words and gestures and even beyond that, to God and His
grace.
Grace means ‘God’s free gift of His presence, His help and His salvation’.
The sacraments are an efficacious sign of grace.

The Seven Sacraments
The Church likes to separate the sacraments into three groups:
Initiation
Healing
Serving the Church
INITIATION
BAPTISM CONFIRMATION THE EUCHARIST also known as the Last Supper
or Holy communion
Catholics believe that all of us
have original sin, even babies.
During baptism, water is poured
over the head, usually three
times, whilst the minister recites
“I baptize you in the name of the
Father and of the Son and of the
Holy Spirit”. Baptism welcomes
the newborn into the Church and
cleanses them of original sin.
Confirming one’s dedication to
God and the Church usually
takes place once an individual is
old enough to understand what is
being said - usually in early
adulthood. Those who are being
confirmed must be free from sin
and have confessed all known
sins to a minister and be in a
state of grace. Confirmation
can only be received once.
The Eucharist, (which was
instituted in the Last Supper by
Jesus) is the act of taking bread
and wine. Catholics believe that
the bread is the body of Christ
and the wine is His blood. Only
individuals who have confessed
their sins can receive
communion.

SERVING THE CHURCH
MATRIMONY/MARRIAGE HOLY ORDERS
The Catholic Church believes that marriage is
sacred and necessary, it does not recognize
divorce. Through marriage, the couple become a
partnership, hopefully to bear children. They
remain married until one of them dies.
Holy orders is the where a man rises up through
the priesthood and dedicates himself to the
Church. It is ‘holy’ because it has a sacred
character and it is ‘ordered’ because of the
structure that it forms. There are three degrees
to the Holy Orders with increasing levels of
responsibility:
Deacon
Priest
Bishop
HEALING
PENANCE AND RECONCILIATION ANOINTING OF THE SICK
Those who confess their sins to a priest, with no
desire to commit them again, are absolved of all
sin. Priests must maintain totally secrecy of any
confessions spoken to them.
Here the priest can anoint the sick with blessed
oils. Anybody who is in danger of illness or old
age and who may pass away without a priest
present can receive the Last Rites by any member
of the Church.

If they get a matching sacrament picture and words they take them out and keep them. If not, turn them over and start again.
