The Seven Habits of Highly Effective Teens - By Sean Covey Reader’s Guide - (English IV –Standard)

Name____________________________________________________________________

This activity is due the first day of your senior year, and will be, along with the book test, a part of your English grade for the first quarter. You may print and write on this sheet or type your responses.

Pre-reading: Before you read the text, answer the following question in complete sentences.

1. As of right now, what are your immediate plans after graduation? What will you have to accomplish in order to read that point? 2. When you imagine your future, what job do you see yourself holding? Think of a career that you are interested in pursuing and write the name of that career below. 3.Describe at least one current habit of yours that could be holding you back from being as successful in reaching your goals and pursuing this possible career.

During/After Reading:

In the following chart, choose a passage or quotation from at least five of the seven habits identified in this book that demonstrate a connection to your life AND that have the potential for helping you succeed with your potential future career.

Use the example below to guide your responses (you may still choose to write your own response to Habit 7 if you wish).

Habit Quotation/Passage (with page #)

How does/can/will this HABIT relate to my life and goals?

How could this HABIT help me stay on track in my future career?

“Habit 7: Sharpen the Saw”

“There are many ways to expand your mind. However, the best approach may simply be to read. As the saying goes, reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body” (Covey 218).

Throughout my life, my parents and teachers have always told me to read, read, read. I’ve always thought that they just wanted me to read because they wanted me to focus on school all the time, but this passage makes me think about reading in a new way. Maybe I’ve always been told to read because people in my life recognize that reading is, like Covey says, a way to “expand your mind” (218). And maybe if I expand my mind, I’ll see things in a different way. Maybe I’ll even be better at solving problems or identifying with people whom I have always seen as different from me. Maybe I’ll try to read one more book this summer as an experiment: the quest to expand my mind!

In order for me to stay on track with my career, I’m going to have to read about what it means to be a dentist. I will also need to read to do research on what college choices and majors I would need to get to get this degree. I will have to read about what others have done, what qualifications are needed, what materials I’ll need, and how to solve a variety of different problems I may encounter while pursuing this degree. This reading will “sharpen the saw” and keep me on top of things and allow me the knowledge to be fully aware of the future.
