Hi There,

I’m Julie-Anne and I’m a recovering highly sensitive soul who’s made all the mistakes I am about to outline below. And I made these mistakes because I didn’t understand my own natural gifts or know how to work with them to my best advantage.

For 10 years I worked in the highly demanding area of social welfare in the non-government community sector. I worked as a therapist, counsellor and mediator. In a sector infamously underpaid, under-valued, under-resourced and an area where people who care deeply about others are often drawn to work in.

It’s something about the welfare industry and the business arena that causes women who have highly sensitive introverted tendencies to get tripped up. As a coach for the last 5 years working with women in corporate business and the government sector I have

come across this dynamic time and time again.

The dynamic playing out is this - a fabulous work ethic, combined with gifted capabilities and intuitive fac-ulties all conspire to work against the sensitive women in her chosen area – primarily because she gives too much of herself and gets too little in return - eventually she becomes filled with resentment gets disheart-

ened and burn out is the outcome. She is not aware of the toll this is taking on her highly tuned nervous sys-tem and the damage she is inadvertently doing to herself due to this.

She by nature is not the one to stand in the spot light and say what about me, rather she works quietly in-dustriously in the back ground and can be counted on to add her ideas and contributions to the team or fam-ily, if she is in business for herself, she will work long hours and give 110% to her clients and she will have trouble setting her fees to match her contribution.

So don’t feel bad.

In and of its self being a highly sensitive soul is a wonderful thing and a great blessing however you and I both know how easily you can become overwhelmed by the pressure of it and how being highly intuitive and sensitive plays havoc with your delicate nervous system.

Now, as an introduction to the trait of high sensitivity, see if the 5 character gifts described below apply to you in your business or daily life .

You are very creative. So creative that your ideas come so fast you can’t seem to follow them to culmination before the next lot arrive. This inability to see things through frustrates you no end. Did you know that it’s because you have a higher level of "development potential" than others and that because your hyper-sensitivity feeds, enriches, empowers and amplifies your talents, you need to do different things to look af-ter yourself than what the others less sensitive people around you.

You are very conscientious, hard working, and meticulous, but you become uncomfortable and less efficient or productive when you have a deadline to meet or your work is being watched or scrutinized by superiors, this then stresses you even more because you can’t produce the type of excellent results you know you want to and are capable of.

You experience mood swings because you are so tuned in, sometimes occurring almost instantly and can also be affected by other people's moods, emotions and problems. Your highly attuned people radar is often picking up the static of other people’s stuff especially in high intensity environments, like offices, loud noisy

parties and restaurants, supermarkets and on pubic transport, in public forums, while your presenting to an audience, and especially in meetings with your boss.

You are very intuitive and get gut feelings in business and people situations but you struggle articulating and justifying them to others who don’t have this ability, just why you feel this way is a mystery to others. You know you’ve missed opportunities in the past or had to compromise and even been delayed on major projects because others have not taken your intuitive hunches seriously.

You get concerned because you care deeply. You think or worry about many things, and have also been told "you take things too personally." You have had to cut people out of your life because of this over concern for others and the tangle you find yourself in because of this is emotionally painful to you.

Some Tips for YouFrom my experience as a sensitive and as a coach for highly sensitive and very gifted women, I’ve found we function much better and benefit greatly from having and sticking to a regular set routine.

Initially we may balk at it and try to jump out of this structure because it feels like we are regimenting our-selves, however with application and regular attention I’ve found the following methods to be the best way to re-regulating the rhythm of the nervous system. This regularity then brings about a sense of ease, confi-dence and strength enabling you to deal effectively with the hurly burly of the hectic life around you.

T h e d a i l y r o u t i n e I r e c o m m e n d i n c l u d e s :

Exercise:

This means exercise of some sort every day walking, yoga, gym, swimming or running - every day - prefer-able at the same time. Especially if it takes you into an alternate environment to the one you spend the ma-jority of your time in.

I had a coaching client who was an artist. She needed to walk for up to 2 hours a day. She didn’t know this until she began to do it. When she walked she discovered she got lots of ideas for her projects and she used the time to plan and organise her thoughts. She also got pretty fit and healthy as a result. She found by doing

this regularly she was much happier and able to create more skillfully than before when she spent all her time working in her studio.

Food:

A proper diet with lots of fresh and raw foods in it, food that feeds your energy levels with the correct type of nutritional input.

Great food gives your brain what it needs so can you can remain clear and focused on your tasks. Also by eating raw food only from time to time you’ll find this has the ability to sharpen your senses, clean your in-testines and energise you considerably.

Stop to eat:

Lunchtime is to be observed and indulged in, this means sitting down for lunch, away from your desk or work environment and enjoying the event. The simplicity of a change of environment and a change pace combine well to replenish you. It will also give you time to tune into your own inner machinations again, this centers you and renews you for the next period of busy work.

Calming practices:

Meditation, prayer or other calming centering spiritual practices are paramount for sensitive souls, these practices focus you immediately, bring you into the moment and provide the necessary space between you and your regular world. This quickly allows your spirit to do its job of replenishing and grounding you back into your body.

I coached a wonderful woman who was a systems analyst for a major bank, she also mentored junior staff, she was an extremely sensitive person and thought there was something fundamentally wrong with her when she compared herself to her co-workers and their ability to deal with stress and incessant noise in the work environment. Before understanding the importance of stillness she was nearly frantic everyday with the pressure she felt with deadlines and commitments, we coached around stopping and slowing down and regaining focus as she worked, she ‘got it’ immediately and being a true caring, contributing sensitive, took the skill and shared it with her junior staff. , to great advantage to them and added greatly to the morale of a high pressured work place.

Journaling:

Keeping a daily journal to work through the issues going on in your rich inner life will help you significantly keep a good perspective on things. Journaling is tailor made tool for very sensitive souls, it keeps you in touch with what’s going on on the inside and the insight gained can immediately be applied to your outer world. It works like a feedback loop informing you of what’s really important and significant.

Retreating:

The act of retreating is a very powerful one for women who give so much of themselves on a daily basis. To retreat can include any type of act in which you claim your own space and use it for your own purposes.

Retreating to bed at 7.30 pm with a book, a cup of herb tea and making sure you put the phone on answering machine can replenish you wonderfully and is great self care.

Retreating by taking regular breaks at work in which you let go of work thoughts, retreating to the country or to a quiet simple place for time alone, retreating to a park on Saturday afternoon to sit on picnic rug and write in your journal – all these simple things will enable you to return to a hectic business environment filled with new inspiration and enthusiasm again.

Scheduling these retreats and breaks into your diary is psychologically very important as well, it sends a message to the deeper self that soon it will have your undivided attention again.

Rest and sleep:

Don’t rob yourself of either of these important elements, it’s a fast track to burnout and overwhelm. You probably have trouble sleeping due to your sensitivity, so keep a regular rhythm with your sleep cycle and allow yourself down time to just do nothing.
