  • Sunday 20th January 2019

St Mark’s stands on the traditional lands of the Bundjalung Nation. We acknowledge and pay our respect to their elders past, present and emerging.

    The Second Sunday After Epiphany

  • The Second Sunday after Epiphany—Sunday January 20 Our closeness to God is what he desires more than anything and the prophet Isaiah expresses this through the image of that sacred institution, Marriage. God’s people are close to him like a bride is close to her bridegroom, and as a bridegroom rejoices over his bride, so God rejoices over his people. Now, we receive so many gifts through the Spirit every day, often without us ful-ly appreciating them or even being aware of them. The goal of these gifts is for us to draw closer to God and to bring others close to him as well. We might like to think about how we can use the gifts we are given to make our salvation ‘shine out like a torch’ and bring more joy to God.

Sentence Jesus revealed his glory, and his disciples believed in him. John 2.11 Collect Bountiful God, whose Son revealed his glory at Cana of Galilee: help us to believe and obey, so that, as our Saviour promised, we may be filled with the wine of new life and show forth his joy and love; who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. Diocesan Prayer God in whom we live and move and have our being, we thank you for Jesus Christ who is the good news. By the power of your Holy Spirit, enable us to be people who transform lives, make disciples and grow communities, that your glory may be revealed in all creation. We pray this through your Son, Jesus Christ. Amen

    First Reading Isaiah 62.1-5

1 For Zion’s sake I will not keep silent, and for Jerusalem’s sake I will not rest, until her vindication shines out like the dawn, and her salvation like a burning torch. 2 The nations shall see your vindication, and all the kings your glory; and you shall be called by a new name that the mouth of the Lord will give. 3 You shall be a crown of beauty in the hand of the Lord, and a royal diadem in the hand of your God. 4 You shall no more be termed Forsaken, and your land shall no more be termed Desolate; but you shall be called My Delight Is in Her, and your land Married; for the Lord delights in you, and your land shall be married. 5 For as a young man marries a young woman, so shall your builder marry you, and as the bridegroom rejoices over the bride, so shall your God rejoice over you. Hear the word of the Lord, Thanks be to God.

Psalm: 36.5-10 5 Your unfailing kindness, O Lord, is in the heavens: and your faithfulness reaches to the clouds. 6 Your righteousness is like the strong mountains: and your justice as the great deep; you, O Lord, save both man and beast. 7 How precious, O God, is your enduring kindness: the children of Adam shall take refuge under the shadow of your wings. 8 They shall be satisfied with the good things of your house: and you will give them drink from the river of your delights. 9 For with you is the well of life: and in your light shall we see light. 10 O continue your merciful kindness toward these who know you: and your righteous dealing to those that are true of heart.

Second Reading 1 Corinthians 12.1-11 1 Now concerning spiritual gifts, brothers and sisters, I do not want you to be unin-formed. 2 You know that when you were pagans, you were enticed and led astray to idols that could not speak. 3 Therefore I want you to understand that no one speaking by the Spirit of God ever says ‘Let Jesus be cursed!’ and no one can say ‘Jesus is Lord’ ex-cept by the Holy Spirit. 4 Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; 5 and there are varieties of services, but the same Lord; 6 and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who activates all of them in everyone. 7 To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. 8 To one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, 9 to an-other faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, 10 to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the discernment of spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. 11 All these are activated by one and the same Spirit, who allots to each one individually just as the Spirit chooses.

Hear the word of the Lord, Thanks be to God. Gospel John 2.1-11

The Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to… Glory to you Lord Jesus Christ. 1 On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. 2 Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. 3 When the wine gave out, the mother of Jesus said to him, ‘They have no wine.’ 4 And Jesus said to her, ‘Woman, what concern is that to you and to me? My hour has not yet come.’ 5 His moth-er said to the servants, ‘Do whatever he tells you.’ 6 Now standing there were six stone water-jars for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding twenty or thirty gallons. 7 Jesus said to them, ‘Fill the jars with water.’ And they filled them up to the brim.

  • 8 He said to them, ‘Now draw some out, and take it to the chief steward.’ So they took it. 9 When the steward tasted the water that had become wine, and did not know where it came from (though the servants who had drawn the water knew), the steward called the bridegroom 10 and said to him, ‘Everyone serves the good wine first, and then the inferi-or wine after the guests have become drunk. But you have kept the good wine until now.’ 11 Jesus did this, the first of his signs, in Cana of Galilee, and revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him. This is the Gospel of the Lord, Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ.

Dear Parish Councillors, It is with deep sadness and much disappointment that I have advised the Bishop of my inability to continue as Rector of this Parish. Unfortunately in the last six months my health has deteriorated significantly. As a result I feel unable to lead the Parish forward as it rises to the challenges of being a faith community in a new and sustainable way which impacts the wider community through its mission and ministry. I intend making this announcement in the service tomorrow morning. My last Sunday in the Parish will be 24 February after which I will proceed on three months long service leave. Until the AGM, I intend working with the Wardens, Parish Chair and Office Administrator to put in place as many pro-cesses as possible to enable you to bed down a vision for the Parish with a plan by which to enact it. I have not taken this decision lightly and it is only after prayerful discernment and medical advice together with the support of the Bishop and the Diocesan Archdeacon that I have made this difficult decision. May the Holy Spirit guide us through this time as we plan for the future. Yours in Christ Judy 29 December 2018
