A note from the Principal… Dear Parents, Cold weather seems to have arrived much sooner than I would have wanted, however, the Thanksgiving holiday is right on schedule. Therefore, this year like every year, I stop to reflect on all the events and happenings from one Thanksgiving to the next. This year there is much to be thankful for; a school full of wonderful students, a staff which excels in excellence, a support staff who exceed our highest expectation, parents who encourage and go that extra mile, and a PTA which delivers only the best. As a community, we are all vested, to degrees great and small, in the futures of the young boys and girls who attend Princess Anne Elementary School. For that, I am thankful. As the leader of this very special community school, I have witnessed firsthand how teamwork, fellowship, comradery, and collaboration have brought us to new heights. This Thanksgiving season, my wish for you is to grow and prosper as a family and within your community. May your endeavors be blessed and reflect the desires of your heart. A fourth grade boy was before a judge facing consequences yet again for disciplinary problems within his school. The boy stood next to his Grandmother who had raised him for many years. As the hearing progressed, it was disclosed that one source of the child’s difficulties was the constant bullying he faced because his Grandmother was not actively involved within his school. When asked by the judge why that might be, the Grandmother replied, “I cannot read or write.”. Upon hearing this, several of the school representatives present asked the judge if he would call a brief recess. They escorted the Grandmother outside and spoke briefly to her. When she returned to the courtroom, the Grandmother’s excitement was obvious. The judge resumed the hearing at which time the grandmother proudly announced, “I am going to be a lunchroom monitor at my grandson’s school!”. Following this event and after many months, the fourth grade boy made no further appearances before the judge and he became a model student. And, yes, the Grandmother was taught to read!’ No matter how small or trivial you may judge your volunteer efforts, always know that they are monumental in a child’s eye. As the PTA President, I advocate for families to spend time in their child’s school, but that is only one way to help those in our community. Be sure to show your children what the true meanings of the upcoming seasons are about and show them how to offer all of their priceless time and talents as well. Enjoy your holidays! PTA President's Letter Hello Princess Anne Families, During this holiday time when we are constantly asked to give of our time and talents, it is often hard to make the effort to do so especially when we have so much to do for our own families. The Penny War Has Begun! Monday began the great competition between the

classes in an effort to raise funds for the PTA Scholarship fund!! Each classroom was given a container to collect pennies during their lunch time. The race is now on and the leader changes daily! Be sure to check out the tally board in the cafeteria every day! For each penny collected, one vote will be given. Put as many pennies as you can into your class’ container to gain the most points. The catch? What if you have a silver coin or a dollar bill? Put these into different classes’ containers and use them to subtract points from their team’s totals. For example, a nickel will subtract 5 points from the class’ total. Strategy is key! Each day the class standings will be posted so that everyone can be certain what their next move should be. *Note: checks will be counted like pennies and result in the addition of points. The reward? The class with the top three highest amount of points will receive a thank you gift! 1st Place: Mad Science voucher for just your class to use this school year.

(Teachers-how nice to have an added assembly to go along with your current science lesson plan??)

2nd Place: Personal class concert performed by Mr. Slay

(Students-you all love listening to Mr. Slay play for you during music class. How about a special concert just for you?)

3rd Place: Popcorn Party when you should decide (Great for those brain breaks!) Parents, be sure to join in on the fun as well! Start bringing in your change now! You only have until Friday before the challenge is over. All proceeds from this event will benefit the PTA PAES Alumnae Scholarship Fund.

Good Luck and may the best penny collecting class win!

A message from the….

It is often difficult to know when to send a child to school and when to keep him/ her home. A good rule of thumb is to keep your child home if he/ she has: *A temperature of 100 degrees or higher. Temperature should be normal for a full 24 hours (without the use of fever reducing medication such as Ibuprofen, Acetaminophen, etc.) before returning to school. *Any vomiting or diarrhea within the last 24 hours. *Has any colored mucous (indicates an infection). *Conjunctivitis (pink eye): students may not attend school if eye discharge is present. Must have received 24 hours’ worth of antibiotic eye drops before returning to school to reduce infecting others. *Varicella (chicken pox): excluded from school until all areas have scabbed over, including those covered by clothing. *Head lice: students may return to school after examination by the school nurse or clinic assistant verifies that they are louse free. *Streptococcal pharyngitis (strep throat): students may return to school after they have been on an antibiotic for 24 hours and are without a fever. *Been too uncomfortable to sleep at night. Our goal is not to keep children home but to keep healthy students in school. Sally Berry,R.N. School Nurse

Parents' Volunteer Efforts Teach By Example

Of all the lessons you teach your children, none are as powerful as the example you set.

Use the power of your own example to teach your child the importance school and of

helping others.

Teachers can often use extra hands to run off papers, stuff mailboxes or design bulletin

boards. A patient volunteer can encourage an at-risk child to persevere when homework

is difficult.

Children need to have parents who are willing to take part in their world. They learn

lessons each time they watch you handle situations with classmates and teachers. They

learn when they see you demonstrate patience and helpfulness. And they learn when

they watch you stick with a job until it's completed—even if it's difficult.

Let your child see you demonstrate helpfulness and enthusiasm. It may be some of the

best teaching you ever do.
