The Harry McCormick HouseThe Harry McCormick House

2712 SE SALMON STREET PORTLAND OR 97214

A Piece of Portland’s Past

The Harry McCormick House, designed by architect

Christoper C. Robbins, is a stunningly grand home built between the years of 1907 - 1910. Its historic splendor has been impeccably restored while offering all of the modern conveniences of today.

Harry McCormick was a wealthy sawmill and timber operator in Portland at the turn of the last century. In 1907 he commissioned architect Christopher C. Robbins to build a fine home on the hilltop of what was then referred to as East Salmon Street.

Originally the house and carriage house, which still stands to the East, occupied the entire North side of the East Salmon Street block. It took three years to build, being completed in 1910. Mr. McCormick and his family also had a home in Los Angeles and it was there, less than a year after his Portland home was completed, that he died of a heart attack while running to catch the Catalina Island Ferry.

Later uses for the house have been largely institutional, including, occupancy by the Western Union Baptist Theological Seminary and The Rosicrucian Society. In the 1980’s, the house returned to single family residence.

FRONT ENTRY Views from the gated entry to the sweeping wrap-around tiled veranda and gardens eventually focus in on the magnificent leaded glass door and sidelights.

The Front Door Glass When the current owner purchased the home in 2011, the front door and two side lights were glazed in simple plate glass. Local historians found and provided a photograph of the original glass door fitted with Povey Brothers beveled & leaded glass. The owner commissioned David Schlicker Art Glass Studio to reproduce the original design using this photograph as his only guide. Three weeks after the design had been approved and construction began, Mr. Schlicker received a visitor with a window for repair. It turned out to be the original front door emerging from more than 40 years of storage in Hood River! How it wound up with the current owner is still a mystery, but the coincidence allowed the original and reproduction to be compared.

The only noticeable difference is the presence of several round jewels where the original leaded glass had been diamonds. See the attached pictures for a view of the original and the reproduction. Based on his years of experience with Povey Brothers windows, Mr. Schlicker also restored the beveled and leaded glass windows in the dining room and created the glass on the stair landing and the peacock window in the living room.

Appreciate the high-level of technology and ambience in this room. A custom acoustical ceiling creates the perfect amount of sound dampening for the concealed surround-sound speakers. “Control 4” operated lighting and window blinds create different levels of illumination for entertaining and media viewing. The sleek bar changes colors, from magenta to blue, emerald to yellow, creating an incredible effect to the owner’s shelving and glassware.
