MCL ShootingThanks to all of the members and their friends who came out on Saturday February the 5th to shoot at the newNational Armory gun range in Pompano. A good time was had by all while exercising our 2nd Amendment rightsat this state-of-the art shooting facility. Also, a noteworthy OORAH! goes out to Marine Dave Benner for kindlyoffering everyone the opportunity to shoot a few of his pistols, especially the crowd favorite, “.44 Magnum. For mostof us, this was the first time having the opportunity to fire the King of large caliber handguns, which I must say wasa lot of fun. Our next shooting date will be planned at the February 17th membership meeting and posted in theMarch 2011 edition of the Scuttlebutt, so keep on the lookout!Semper Fi - Commandant Scott Vulpis

It's Official. Once a Marine, Always a Marine! The 35th Commandant of the Marine Corps, General Jim Amos, has issuedhis planning guidance to the Corps. After announcing all of his priorities andplans for the future of our fighting Marines, he passed on some importantinformation for us all.. "A Marine is a Marine. I set that policy two weeks ago - there's no suchthing as a former Marine. You're a Marine, just in a different uniform andyou're in a different phase of your life. But you'll always be a Marinebecause you went to Parris Island, San Diego or the hills of Quantico. There's no such thing as a former Marine."

BROTHERSBy Corpsman Jerry Biondolillo

I don’t believe anyone can fathom how close men in combat get(except combat vets), even thoughat the end we went our separate way, that closeness never fades. We were brothers, not of the sameparents, but of something that made us much closer. The bond that combat produces is very hard toexplain, we would lay down our life for one another. We shared the same foxhole. We knew each others strength, we knew each others weakness. Wejoked, we laughed, we kidded one another. But when we cried, there were no tears, the tears were inour heart. Those of us who came home still have the feeling of guilt. Why them, that we left behindand not us. We have lived all our lives silently with this hidden guilt. We close our eyes at night, butin the darkness we still see them, the vision still remains. The distance of time has not overcome the closeness we still share. We were brothers, “No” we are still “Brothers.”

New VA Support Line Provides Important Assistance to CaregiversBenefits and Support Information a Phone Call Away

WASHINGTON – The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is increasing its support tocaregivers with a new, toll-free telephone line for the caregivers of Veterans of all eras.

“The families and loved ones who care for severely injured Veterans deserve the highest level of support,”said Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric K. Shinseki. “At VA, we consider them important partners in ourefforts to care for and rehabilitate our nation’s heroes.”

The National Caregiver Support Line -- 1-855-260-3274 -- will serve as the primary resource and referralcenter to assist caregivers, Veterans and others seeking caregiver information.

The line unofficially started Feb. 1, and in its first week logged nearly 600 calls, including 134 referrals tolocal VA caregiver support coordinators and 233 calls from caregivers themselves.

“VA has been providing support for the caregivers of Veterans for more than seven decades,” Shinsekiadded. “We already have more than two dozen successful programs, policies and services that supportthe caregivers of Veterans of all ages.”

The support line will provide information regarding new caregiver benefits, referrals to local caregiversupport coordinators as well as emotional support to those concerned with their ability to provide care toloved ones who are Veterans.

The National Caregiver Support Line will be open Monday through Friday. 8 a.m. to 11 p.m., Eastern time;and Saturday, 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., Eastern time. Licensed VA social workers and health technicians willstaff the support line.

Local caregiver support coordinators are available to assist Veterans and their caregivers to understandand apply for VA’s many caregiver benefits. VA also features a Web page, www.caregiver.va.gov, withgeneral information on other caregiver support programs available through VA and the community.

Access to the National Caregiver Support Line was also identified as a significant need in a November2010 study on caregivers of Veterans published by the National Alliance for Caregiving.

Have you heard of the combined effort of DOD and VA to improve communication to veterans, known as eBenefits? The eBenefits portal is an online resource that veterans can use to find and manage benefit-related information. The website is located at www.ebenefits.va.gov and will allow veterans to follow the development process of theirclaim among many other things. We ask that you all help get the word out to our veterans and to our active dutypersonnel that are about to make the transition from active duty to civilian life.

U.S. Military History Quiz

WHO AM IMy parents were wealthy, upper class naturalized Americans from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and I was bornwhile they were traveling through Europe in Bremen, Germany on 22 October 1810. As a young man myparents entered me in a military college in Germany, one of the first of its kind in Europe.

In the United States, helped by family connections I became wealthy as a dealer of imported wines andliquors. Subsequently, while traveling in Europe the Crimean War broke out and I volunteered for service withthe allies serving with the French Army where I was witness to the infamous Charge of the Light Brigade andthe annihilation of the Heavy Brigade. I participated in the siege, storming and capture and the surrender ofSevastopol. I was living in Holland when news reached me of the shelling and surrender of Fort Sumter. Ideparted from my estate in Holland and returned to the United States where I took a key role in organizingthe 75th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, being named its Colonel and commander 30 September 1861. Withthe Union Army I served with the Division of Union General Louis Blenker, thereupon being appointed toBrigadier General, US Volunteers on 28 April 1862.

During the 1862 Valley Campaign I fought with Carl Schurz's Division against the Confederate GeneralStonewall Jackson and covered the retreat of Union forces at the Battle of Cross Keys and the Battle of CedarMountain.

It was during a personal reconnaissance examining a crossing point of the Rappahannock River during theinitial stages of the Northern Virginia Campaign that I was slain by a Confederate sharpshooter with a singlebullet to the head. I am buried in Laurel Hill Cemetery in Philadelphia.

My great-great-nephew served as a United States diplomat serving in Washington, Peking and Vatican Cityfrom 1929 to 1996 and was a noted expert on the Soviet Union. Another family member was the personalinterpreter and friend of United States President Franklin D. Roosevelt. However, my grandson was indictedfollowing the Second World War as a German War Criminal as the head of Krupp Industries, his poor health, and the knowledge that his grandson had opposed the Nazis, he had personally warned Von Hindenburg, then president of Germany against appointing Adolf Hitler as Chancellor of Germany.
