The Script September 2015

Youth and Family Mark your calendars for Eat–Pray–Love on Wednesday nights:

September 9, 16, 23 and 30th; from 6pm to 8:45pm . The evening will

include a meal, large group interactive intergeneration study, break out

classes - crafts for kids/teens and continued learning for adults. And an

opportunity to do a service project together.

Please register on the sign up list in the Narthex. We need to

ensure enough supplies are on hand.

Invite friends and come to enjoy an evening together.


Fundraising Updates

OUR FIRST BENEFIT CONCERT WAS A SUCCESS! Guemmer & Myers Music gave a wonderful performance. During

intermission delicious baked goods were enjoyed along with fellowship.

Thank you to all who supported this fundraiser and helped make it a great

event! The net profit was $1,981. The 15% benevolence portion was

divided and sent to the Douglass Middle School and Lee Middle School

Music Departments.

ALL ABOARD! From the Soul Train Excursion to the Healing Service…

Did you see the cool train that Pastor Mary made for us for the Soul Train Excursion?

Did you know that just as we have individual souls, ALC also has Soul?

What is “Soul”?

Motivation demonstrates function of the “soul.”

The San Jose Mercury News recently identified Draymond Green as the “soul” of the

Golden State Warriors NBA Team. What motivated Draymond Green to stand out as

the “soul” of the Warriors Team?

What motivated two people, Senate President Kevin DeLeon, and ex-hedge fund

billionaire Tom Steyer, to join their resources to protect God’s creation? Kevin

DeLeon, the son of a maid emerged to support environmental justice for the poor; and

Tom Steyer, as his faith grew, became interested in protecting God’s creation and

being a better steward for everyone and for all living creatures.

Why do people act the way they do? What motivates people? What drives an

organization to do great or terrible things? MOTIVATION demonstrates function of

the SOUL!

Remember our discussion on B.U.R.S.T. (Belonging; Understanding; Respect; Safety;

Trust)? Agenda for human behavior is grounded in B.U.R.S.T. B.U.R.S.T. is a basic

or fundamental catalyst for human behavior. B.U.R.S.T. controls agenda for human

behavior:

Exploring the Soul of this congregation and your individual souls allow us to take

inventory on how does this congregation generate and use its energy resources.

Motivation is the generation and use of energy resources.

As a community of faith at ALC, we are to generate and use ALC’s Resources wisely

and share in the responsibilities at ALC–--be it Sunday School, church service, VBS,

the sound system, the newsletter, the maintenance; grounds, you name it---just as if it

were your personal household, giving it the attention and care that it needs.

What are ALC’s energy resources? It is all of your time, talent, expertise, know how, experience, abilities, passion, money, knowledge, etc. Some times we need to draw them out of the people who are not so inclined to get involved. It means that we are to take care of each other and recognize the needs and celebrate the resources and the uniqueness of each SOUL. Motivation is the generation and use of energy resources. Motivation controls how a person says and does something. Does he/she walk the talk or say one thing and do another? Motivation is a need, emotion, idea or purpose, strong enough and conscious enough to produce behavior. A student who wants to be the first person in her family to go to college actually studies hard to get there.

At our recent workshop, we explored Soul for American Lutheran Church (ALC) and ALC’s members. We asked you to board the ALC Soul Train by posting on it a description of your soul and the Soul of American Lutheran Church. This Soul Train exercise allows us to peek at the health of ALC’s soul and your soul.

It’s not too late to share your description of your Soul and the Soul of ALC, as you see it. You may draw or write those descriptions. Please invite anyone interested in participating to do so. We are taking an inventory of your Souls and the soul of your congregation to reflect on the health of ALC.

Congregational Health is a three-letter word: W.O.W.

Notably, the increase in health awareness in our society benefits organizations as well as individuals. Generally, healthy organizations tend to produce healthy individuals and vice versa. Therefore, a strong correlation exists between ALC individuals and ALC’s

health.

Health is a fragile gift. Health in a congregation is not a given but a potential for a community of faith. What are the characteristics of healthy congregations? For congregations, health is a three-letter word: W.O.W.


W= Worship. Some of the ingredients for congregational health are silence in

reflecting humility, the joy of spiritual communion with God and each other,

reverence for life for all of creation, and respect for each other.

O= Openness is the readiness to listen to other people and perspectives

without being defensive. Openness is both a reflection and a facilitator of

congregational health. Openness is reflected in hospitality and acceptance of

diversity, effective communication, and care for each other and the outside

community. When openness is present in a congregation, members are more

open to each other and the outside community; they are more open in the

leading of the Holy Spirit, even when God leads in new directions.

W=Witness is a sign of health and an inducement of health. Sharing spiritual

health with others through testimonial and active caring also nurtures such

health. It includes having the spiritually healthy members stand up for

righteousness when evil threatens

Other characteristics for health are respect for the pastor and lay leaders; a simple and effective grievance process; healing; celebration; healthy models and mentors; and the ability to deal openly with hopeful trust on matters including loss, death, and dying.

Where is ALC on the health barometer? Does ALC have a spiritual fitness program? Does ALC have a first aid kit for wound care and healing? What is in ALC’s diet—does ALC gorge on spiritual junk food? Does ALC have “W.O.W.”?

Did you know we are Soul Keepers? Soul Keepers are lay leaders, VBS teachers, Sunday School Teachers, parents, council members, committee members, people holding leadership positions, pastor. We are Soul Keepers! We have an important job to do!

Are Council Members pastor to your Pastor? Are you pastor to anyone in your church community, in your workplace, at home, and in your greater community?

We will be applying some of these ideas in the upcoming Problem Solving phase.

Worship and Music

Our meeting was August 6th, 2015. We discussed sign ups for the various

worship duties. We will continue to remind everyone each Sunday to sign up on the worship board. Donna Martin suggested we find a person dedicated to calling people for the W&M duties—greeter, reader, etc. Lori will put a notice in the next newsletter. Consider this my notice: We seem to get better response when we call or talk to folks face to face and right now, Willa Mae is happy to do that. Some times we run out of time to get that job done. However, my prayer is that you, as a child of God are already being asked/called by God through the Holy Spirit to serve in the capacities that you can. That you would take it upon yourself to heed his call and say ‘Here I am Lord—I’ll sign up’. Please know that each of you are appreciated for the service you do even though we don’t always get around to saying Thank You!!!!

Lori asked that each altar guild member that does communion set-up look at their calendars and commit to a date they could do in the next two months and call Willa Mae. This is different from any other worship duties in that it needs to be done the day before service or early in the morning on Sunday. These folks need access to the church building and are part of the worship and music committee even though they may not be attending the meetings. It is at the meetings where these things are finalized so if each set up person will let Willa Mae know when they will set up communion it relieves a burden for her and we are able to fill in the blanks at our meeting.

We looked at our upcoming dates. Aug: 30th was supposed to be the Animal

Blessing Service. It was cancelled because 1) there was not enough time for advertising to local business to come join us. 2) Although other committees would have helped out there was not enough manpower in the W & P Committee to get the job done. 3) We need to and will begin our planning farther in advance next year.


Worship and Music continued

The committee looked farther into the remaining calendar for the special services that will require extra work from the committee and will plan accordingly at the next meeting. Reformation was discussed and a motion was made and carried to have Carol Herzig and Willa Mae Heintz make matching banners to our reformation paraments with a budget from the money market W&M fund. Although the committee allotted them a budget of $200.00, they felt it would cost under $100.00.

Our next Meeting will be Thursday September 3rd

Other dates: Choir begins Thursday September 17th 7:15. All are welcome.

Needed: Actors to do a couple of skits during our healing service on September 13
