No Videos, Please

To ensure the protection of all musical works, SJC has joined with ASCAPand BMI and soon SESAC. The terms of these agreements allow thelegitimate performance of live shows of most music. Videoing, on the otherhand, is a different story requiring a costly synchronization license.Although SJC can video shows under certain conditions, usually having to

do with education considerations, no videos of SJC presentations by either patrons ormusicians are allowed. In this way, we do our part in supporting the writers and composers,a profession of which many of us are affiliated.

FYI - Copyright infringement occurs when someone uses work that is protected bycopyright laws without the creator's (Publisher and songwriters) permission. If found liablefor copyright infringement, one may face damages of up to $150,000. The penalty is greater

Page 6: The sCoop - sacramentojazzcoop.org · The sCoop Introducing our first newsletter,The sCoop. ... Manchester, Toni Tennille, Roberta Flack, Rosemary ... A couple of you buy tickets

if the court finds the infringement willful. YouTube, Vimeo, and others on that level allow thesharing of videos because they have either obtained or requested, or in some other way payfor the appropriate permissions. Our recommendation is simply not to use other creators'work unless you have their written permission. Merely because it is ever easier to copy theworks of others, via computers, tape recorders, VCRs, photocopiers and the Internet, forexample, doesn't make it lawful to do so.

We're still trying to get our piano movedfrom Rocklin to the Masonic Temple.Sluggish ticket sales over the summer haveslowed us down a bit as we concentrate onshow overhead. We need to get creative withthis project and perhaps can get a committeeof members to raise the funds. Increasedmembership will also help. To repeat, weneed to have it transported, placed on a dollytruck so it can be moved around as needed, and buy a quilted cover. Total cost isapproximately $2000. The Masonic Templehas a nice spot just waiting for it.

No Room In the Inn

A primary goal of SJC has been to find dedicated space on which to hang our shingle.Recently, an opportunity opened, and we applied to be a full-time tenant at the E. Claire RaleyStudio (CLARA) at 2420 N Street. We know that some of you have been anxious to hear theresults of that. Well, we didn't get the 22x32 foot space that was available. It was our hope, orat least, it was my hope, that obtaining the space would allow us to host some functions thatwould make it pay for itself and meet other goals. Wasn't meant to be, but I am confidentthere is something better down the road for us. In the meantime, we have an opportunity togrow our organization with new members. It is also important that existing members renew atthe same or greater level next year. If we are going to continue, and I'm doing my best toshow you I intend to continue, we are going to have to increase our numbers to pay showoverhead expenses and other challenges.

Word is out about another nonprofit that will begin jazz performances at the CLARA in 2018.While I'm not sure how that will impact our audience turnout, which has been sluggish overthe summer, I do know it is nice to have choices. The more quality jazz, the more benefits tolovers of jazz. I can only hope that we continue to be a means of inspiration to ensure thatthe mere mention of Sacramento becomes synonymous with jazz. One thing I know forsure, no one will have more dedicated members than what you have shown to us over thislast year. I won’t mention any names because I don't want to embarrass anyone. Nor do Iwant to make anyone feel they aren't doing enough, so I will just say, that as we close ourfiscal year on September 30th, it will be with the realization that you have been extraordinary. Some of you joined or donated at the $1000 level, in one case, more than $2500. Several ofyou have bought and continue to buy tickets to every single show, whether you attended ornot. A couple of you buy tickets from time to time, with no intention of attending the shows, and ask me to donate the tickets to someone who might be appreciative. So, we’ll just keepthe music playing for as long as we can, as often as we can, wherever we can, as best wecan; you are the best!
