SCIENTIFIC SCIENTIFIC REVOLUTIONREVOLUTION
Magic to Science
• Renaissance ideas began to be applied to science
• Used new instruments and mathematics to examine nature and found it did not match with traditional views– Most people still believed what Aristotle
said (over 2000 years old)
Astronomy
• Copernicus– Disproved Ptolemy’s Geocentric theory and
established new Heliocentric theory
• Kepler– Improved heliocentric theory and created
laws of planetary motion
• Galileo– Built telescope– Observed rings of Saturn and moons of
Jupiter
Physics and Anatomy
• Newton– Gravity, laws of motion and basis of
modern physics
• Vesalius– Studied human body, wrote book on
anatomy
• Harvey– Studied blood circulation
Scientific Thought
• Descartes– “I think, therefore I am”– Do not accept something without first
questioning it
• Francis Bacon– Develop ideas through observation
• Robert Boyle– Chemistry- gas law temperature and
pressure

• In groups you are going read about one of the scientists from the Scientific Revolution
• You need to come up with answers that your person would have to the following questions
• We will have a class discussion with you role playing as your scientist
THIS WILL BE GRADED
• Take it seriously!
• If you are off topic than you will lose points
• If you need help raise your hand and ask, “I don’t know” is not an excuse
