The Scientific Method WebQuest

Scientists have a procedure that they follow when doing experiments, it’s called the Scientific Method. Today we are going to learn about the scientific method, its uses, and its history in this WebQuest.

Directions: Go to your lab stations. You will be working in groups of 4. Log into the computer and go to the website http://mrscienceut.net/scientificmethod.html. YOU ARE NOT FOLLOWING THE ASSIGNMENTS LISTED ON THE WEBSITE. Your assignments will be listed on this sheet of paper. Scroll down to Resources. You will use the websites listed to conduct your WebQuest.

Assignments:

1. What is the Scientific Method?

• Use the websites to research the steps of the scientific method.

• Define and explain each step.

• Create a flow chart showing the order of the steps (You may draw pictures by hand, make one on Paint or Word, and be creative. This is your personal flow chart.)

• Answer the following questions in complete sentences: o Is each description of the scientific method the same?  o How can the steps of the scientific method differ? o Can each step be completed only once? Explain. o How do scientists use the scientific method? o How is the scientific method useful outside of the classroom in the real world? o Think of one occasion where you used the scientific method and maybe didn’t

even realize you used it.

2. What is the history of the Scientific Method?

• Write a paragraph answering the following questions: o Who is credited with discovering the Scientific Method? o What did he use the scientific method to prove? o Can you name any other events in history that caused people to ask “Why or

how did that happen? (Hint: Think back to the Ancient Greeks, Romans, and Egyptians…)

3. How can we apply the Scientific Method?

• Select 3 of the following scenarios and answer the corresponding questions:

o Dawn is afraid of germs. She wants to buy a brand of soap that will kill the most germs. She goes to the supermarket and buys 3 of the top soap products. How can she use the scientific method to determine which brand is the best? Describe actual experiments that she can perform. What kind of data will be collected? How can it be analyzed?

o Dan comes home from a long day at work. He decides to sit down and watch

some TV. He grabs the remote to turn on the television and it won’t turn on. Help Dan figure out what could be wrong with the TV? Name at least 3 things that could explain the situation. How can Dan test each explanation to figure out what is actually wrong? What kind of data will be collected? How can it be analyzed?

o The Jones’ family received a very high electric bill for the month of August. They

want to have a cheaper bill for the month of September. Find 3 different ways that the Jones family can save money on their electric bill. How can they use the scientific method to find out which idea will result in the cheapest bill? What kind of data will be collected? How can it be analyzed?

o Jonathan loves to go fishing. There is a lake by his house that he fishes at every

weekend. Lately, Jonathan has been nothing that there is less and less fish in the pond. Help him use the scientific method to figure out what is wrong with the fish. What are at least 3 factors that could be affecting the fish population? How can he test each factor? What kind of data will be collected? How can it be analyzed?

o Melanie goes the check the time on her cell phone and realizes that it is not

working. Come up with at least 3 ideas as to why her cell phone is not working. Use the scientific method to describe how she can find out what is actually wrong with her phone. What kind of data will be collected? How can it be analyzed?

o Janet has a beautiful front lawn that she maintains on a weekly basis. There is

one patch of the lawn, however, where she cannot seem to get the grass to grow. Think of 3 reasons why the grass cannot grow.  How could you test to see which reason is causing the grass not to grow? Come up with actual experiments you could perform. What kind of data will be collected? How can it be analyzed?
