The Science of GuruRef: Verse 1 – 10, Chapter 2, Bhagwad Gita

Arjuna is headed to the biggest war of his life.

The enemy is afraid of Arjuna, yet he finds himself trapped in grief.

© Puneet Srivastava, 2014

A grief so deep that it has shattered him from within.

All his knowledge and qualifications have become useless in a moment.

In the battlefield Arjuna must fight his grandfather and his teacher.

Two people he reveres the most, he sees, stand in his way to victory.

© Puneet Srivastava, 2014

He is a noble soul. How can he fire arrows on people so respected?

Thus, in an instant he surrenders all the thoughts of victory…

© Puneet Srivastava, 2014

Yet, something in him tells, he can’t just quit like that either.

So, now, he can’t fight and also he can’t quit!

© Puneet Srivastava, 2014

What must he do now?

Confused, shaken and depressed, he seeks patronage of Krishna.

© Puneet Srivastava, 2014

He accepts Krishna as his ‘Guru’ and humbly requests to show the way.

The magic of the word ‘Guru’ is held within the word itself.

© Puneet Srivastava, 2014

‘Gu’ is darkness, ‘Ru’ means light. ‘Guru’ is the one who takes us from the darkness to light.

And which is the brightest of all lights?

© Puneet Srivastava, 2014

The light of the Almighty!

The light, which once embraced, puts an end to all confusions of life.

© Puneet Srivastava, 2014

Guru is the one who puts us on the path of Almighty.

This is the reason why in India, Guru is revered even before reverence is paid to the Almighty.

© Puneet Srivastava, 2014

We may question, is it necessary to go to a Guru to be on the path of Almighty?

Well, to make this part practically understandable, let’s play a small quiz…

© Puneet Srivastava, 2014

Please imagine a tree… yes, any tree.

A tree, as in a garden, or in a forest, or on a mountain or just anywhere!

© Puneet Srivastava, 2014

What did you imagine?

Perhaps, something like in the picture! A beautiful tree in some beautiful place, with branches, leaves, flowers, fruits, etc…

© Puneet Srivastava, 2014

But, did you see its roots?

The truth of the tree is as much below the ground as much above it.

© Puneet Srivastava, 2014

Without a Guru, we may fail to see the complete truth.

The path shown by the Guru is the path they have experienced.

© Puneet Srivastava, 2014

This is the path of spirituality, treaded through:

Control of senses

Application of spiritual knowledge &

Unhindered devotion.

Someone may ask, how may one find a true Guru in modern times?

A time when we see fakes & impostors preaching spirituality!

© Puneet Srivastava, 2014

Here’s a wonderful secret. While anyone cannot be a Guru…

Please note also that not everyone can get blessed by a true Guru.

© Puneet Srivastava, 2014

A Guru is the greatest gift of God that may happen to us.

Thus it comes only to those who have been truly devout.

© Puneet Srivastava, 2014

To such people Guru appears very much by themselves.

Yes, to a noble soul, Guru appears right in front when one is ready.

© Puneet Srivastava, 2014

So first we must trust the Almighty to find us a Guru.

And then, we must trust the Guru to find us the Almighty.

© Puneet Srivastava, 2014

This is perhaps the biggest secret of this science and there’s one more...

Every Guru would have their unique methods.

© Puneet Srivastava, 2014

Plus, a Guru may share their knowledge freely with all.

Yet comprehending the message remains our responsibility.

Gratitude:

To my revered teacher & the message of SDM:
