We spend a third of our life in bed, this equates to 3,000 hours, over 120 full days per year! There is compelling evidence that a healthy sleep routine can contribute greatly to one’s physical and mental well being as well as the overall quality of life. Sufficient sleep ranks among the best defense mechanisms we have in order to stay healthy and effectively handle stress. A new bed may not be a wonder cure for all of life’s stresses and strains, but it will certainly help you get a better night’s sleep, leaving you refreshed and ready to seize the day – Carpe Diem!

Sleep... We spend a third of our lives doing it. Napoleon, Florence Nightingale and Margaret Thatcher got by on only four hours a night. Thomas Edison claimed it was waste of time.

So why do we sleep? This is a question that has baffled scientists for centuries and the answer is, no one is really sure. Some believe that sleep gives the body a chance to recuperate from the day's activities but in reality, the amount of energy saved by sleeping for even eight hours is miniscule - about 50 kCal, the same amount of energy in a piece of toast!

We have to sleep because it is essential to maintaining normal levels of cognitive skills such as speech, memory, innovative and flexible thinking. In other words, sleep plays a significant role in brain development.

Home is a place of sanctuary, and no room gives us a more profound sense of shelter than the bedroom. Whether in a cave, communal sleeping hall of a medieval castle, boudoir, or four-poster bed, humans have always sought out comfort and warmth, and created sleeping spaces to protect our tired, defenceless bodies from the outside world & its elements. It is where we find respite from our daily cares, and an intimate space that clearly expresses our identity. Furnished with individual style, a bedroom can be a comfortable, personal place to rest, relax, read to children and even work.

A New Bed Is Better Than The Sleeping Pill The quality of sleep and how it affects our daily life is a relatively new concept to Britain. In the late 1960s, the President of the National Bedding Federation announced that the British were very parsimonious about their beds: “We place luxurious sleeping equipment at everybody’s disposal,” he complained, “but many people are still sleeping, or trying to sleep, on beds and mattresses in the last stages of senile decay.” Surprising enough, some half a century later, the president’s point still prevails - people change their cars more often than they change their mattresses! Research shows that buying a new bed may give a better night’s sleep than taking a sleeping pill! Two-year research by sleep expert Dr. Chris Idzikowski of the Sleep Assessment and Advisory Service (SAAS) found that those with uncomfortable beds slept on average one hour less each night than those with comfortable beds - so if your mattress is more than 10 years old, you should seriously consider replacing it! When a bed is no longer providing proper support and comfort, it affects the quality of our sleep. Research also shows that one in ten people suffer from insomnia every night. According to Dr Irshaad Ebrahim, Medical Director of the London Sleep Centre, “Sleep deprivation weakens the immune system and is linked to diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity and psychological stress.” – all risk factors for stroke and heart disease.

Sleep is directly related to how you feel during your waking hours. A good night’s sleep helps the body recuperate and all stages of the sleep cycle are necessary in order for you to wake up alert and rested. Deep

sleep revitalizes the body and REM-sleep clears the brain. In addition, your bed should be pressure relieving and free from blood circulation interfer-ence. That makes the construction and the content of your bed incredibly important. Ideally, the mat-tress should mould to the shape of your body while remaining supportive – the aim is to achieve good “posture” in bed. Too soft and your body will slouch, leading to back pain; too firm will cause discomfort at pressure points such as hips and shoulders. Scandinavia is one of the first regions to view sleep

research as valuable and pertinent and brands like Carpe Diem, Sensi-Scandia and Kinnabädden utilise their beds and mattresses as an educa-tional platform to create a greater awareness of the importance of a fully restful night’s sleep. They purport that “A good day starts at night” and make a clear distinction in what it means to sleep IN a bed as opposed to merely ON a bed.

Page 5: The Scandinavian Bed Company Ltd Online Brochure

It may be time for a new mattress if:

You wake up with aches and pains, which wear off as the day progresses

You are not sleeping as well as you did a year ago You enjoy better sleep somewhere else than in your own bed Your mattress shows signs of visible wear and tear

Beds don’t last forever – life span is affected by factors such as the quality, care, amount of use e.g. reading, watching TV or working on the laptop; changes in lifestyle (marriage, new home) and in our bodies e.g. losing or gaining weight, ageing etc., can also necessitate a change of bed. We spend a third of our life in bed, this equates to 3,000 hours, over 120 full days per year! There is compelling evidence that a healthy sleep routine can contribute greatly to one’s physical and mental well being as well as the overall quality of life. Sufficient sleep ranks among the best defence mechanisms we have in order to stay healthy and effectively handle stress A new bed may not be a wonder cure for all of life’s stresses and strains, but it will certainly help you get a better night’s sleep, leaving you refreshed and ready to seize the day – Carpe Diem! Restoring Your Biological Clock

Did you know that you possess your greatest level of cardiovascular efficiency and muscle strength at around 17:00? And that the sharpest rise in your blood pressure occurs at 6:45 in the morning? The primary cause of these “built-in” functions is daylight.

The technical term for our biological clock is called a circadian rhythm. The term “circadian” comes from the Latin circa, meaning “around” and diem or dies meaning “day”. The rhythm is linked to the light dark -

Page 6: The Scandinavian Bed Company Ltd Online Brochure

cycle, which is recorded and interpreted by the retina (our eyes), which is then passed on to the pineal gland, responsible for producing the hormone melatonin. Melatonin is nature’s sleep-regulating hormone and antioxidant, stimulated by darkness and suppressed by light. Levels are lower during the day and gradually increase as night falls to help induce sleep. Low levels of melatonin can lead to difficulty in initiating sleep, maintaining sleep and waking too soon from sleep — all cases of varying degrees of insomnia. Prolonged disturbances to sleep patterns can also seriously alter levels of important hormones linked with appetite and eating behaviour. When you are sleep deprived the hormone leptin, responsible for making you feel full decreases while levels of ghrelin increases triggering hunger. In other words, lack of sleep puts your body into a pre-diabetic state, making you feel hungry even if you have already eaten. Ultimately, it is sleep quality rather than quantity that’s key to positively influencing our biological clock. When we get enough nourishing sleep, we are more likely to stay healthy and well all around. Mobile Phone App’s – The New Sleep Aid

We live in a world where technology has advanced so

greatly, that in the palm of our hand we can access and interact with anyone, anywhere about anything. Software developers have created intelligent, intuitive devices that enable us to further learn, entertain and create with infinite possibilities. For those who suffer with sleep

disorders such as sleep apnoea, it is now possible to monitor breathing patterns through the night to aid in self-diagnosis and to help provide evidence of how well we are really sleeping at night.

AmbiScience is just one of many applications that are beginning to replace the sleeping pill with mobile phones. Using soothing, evocative ambient music and combining entrainment – a safe, audio process of stimulating your brain to attune to certain frequencies, or “brainwave synchronization” it is possible to induce sleep more quickly, and with no chemical side effect. iPhone’s have a built-in device called an accelerometer, which can pick up on and respond to changes such as vibration, shock and falling. This enables app’s such as Sleep Cycle to act as a bio-alarm clock - to more gently and naturally wake you when you are in your lightest sleep phase, whilst graphing and recording sound & movement so you can analyze your sleep patterns. Other applications that record your dream/sleep schedule include: Sleep On It, Sleep Master, Snore Inspector and Sleep Talk Recorder.

Carpe Diem luxury products are made to accommodate the needs of our clientele by

offering four different types of support systems finished with the final touch of our sumptuous top mattresses to render an incomparable night’s comfort.

Scandinavian Bed Frames

Our Koster and Malö models are a perfect example of the ingenuity in combining simple elegance with function. The Koster standard and Malö premium models share the benefit of an integrated box spring and mattress set that provides both the bottom structural rigidity necessary to maintain long-term original overall support while allowing upper softness to contour body curves. The addition of our basic top mattress produces an overall rest assembly of incomparable excellence.

Continental Beds

Kornö, Härmanö and the premium Sandö represent Carpe Diem'

s

answer to the quest of finding perfection in its best form. The Kornö premium, Härmanö and Sandö luxury models are all recipients of Carpe Diem’s patented bottom segment system for decreasing rebound in mattresses for a better distribution for the body weight over a wider mattress surface resulting in a lightweight feeling over the body. Our exclusive plush top mattress is added to enhance the task of de

the body with one side lined in wool for cosy winter nights and the other side filled with cotton for cooler summer evenings.

Adjustable Continental Beds Our luxury Skaftö model is a combination of everything that our integrated and double layer systems are in addition to the introduction of mid-back adjustable support controlled by a wireless remote system making the Skaftö bed second to none in the industry. This innovation allows the mattress to adjust the point of support desired without altering the original firmness of the mattress set. The exclusive top mattress works to render unnoticeable the borders of the adjustable sections of the mattress set.

Adjustable Beds The Saltö and premium Marstrand adjustable models are Carpe Diem’s answer to the need for flexibility in resting and sleeping comfort. With the same characteristics of the Kornö and Malö beds, Carpe Diem has produced a bed that adjusts through a range of positions by wireless remote control. The premium Marstrand bed includes an electrically adjustable lumbar support to improve posture when activating the various positions of the bed. The basic or exclusive top mattress compliments the bed assembly for comfort. Safety from the moving parts is provided through a patented protection mechanism that ensures peace of mind at all times.

Just as the rose has its thorns to protect its beauty, our planet Earth is an electromagnetic body threaded with an invisible grid of electromagnetic (EMF) lines named aer German scientist,

Ernst Hartmann. Hartmann’s grid consists of parallel energy waves emitted from the Earth. He describes them as positive and negative, directed North-South and East-West. Natural radiation

which rises up through the Earth is distorted by weak EMF’s created by subterranean (underground) running water, certain mineral concentrations, fault lines - even electrical wiring,

lighting, TV’s, microwaves and cell phones have an EMF which all put a great strain on your immune system.

e Neutralizer

Technical Nature of the Invention

e neutralizer is a protective device that disperses in a concentric (circular) mode the EMF’s at the cross-points of Hartmann’s grid thus keeping these unfavourable inu-

ences outside the bed surface. is ensures the most favourable conditions for the rejuvenation of energy and health during sleep.

Our task was to create a bed with a built-in neutralizer that provides protection against harmful pathogenic radiation from the

Earth and our immediate surrounds.

The Perfectly-Postured Modern Lifestyle Bed In the pursuit of leisure, pleasure and divine comfort we explore an old

product with a new twist - traditionally thought of as the ‘geriatric’ or ‘old persons’ bed because of its medical benefits, the adjustable bed is quickly becoming the new way forward, greatly improving the quality of life for the modern person. It is where we find respite from our daily cares,

and an intimate space that clearly expresses our identity. Through following modern trends the bedroom is no longer used solely to rest our weary head, it is a multi-purpose space where you could enjoy listening to music, watching a movie or working on the computer. Opening up sleeping spaces to other aspects of our lives means adopting a new approach to the way its styled and utilising multi-purpose furniture to adapt to multiple functions! We spend at least a third of our lives in bed.. Why not spend it in comfort and style? Elevate your upper body and feet for just the perfect position to watch TV, read a good book, work on your laptop or simply enjoy breakfast in bed! Snoring affects around 3.5 million people in the UK and in 99% of cases, snoring is treatable. Elevating the bed alleviates pressure exerted on the airways by the soft palate tissue at the back of the throat, thus relieving the obstruction that would otherwise be left to vibrate and produce snoring sounds. Adjustable beds are often prescribed for people with sleep apnoea, back pain, work-related injuries and hiatal hernias. Those affected by sleep apnoea may stop breathing for between 10 to 25 seconds at a time, depleting the brain and bloodstream of vital oxygen supplies – some sufferers experiencing up to 350 ‘apneic events’ in one night – such unwanted night time activities also greatly increase risk of stroke, high blood pressure and cardiovascular illness. Elevation of the head of the bed by about 30° substantially decreases and sometimes eliminates apnoea in patients. And so.. Whether you’re tired of listening to your partner snore, in search of obtaining a truly neutral (and therefore comfortable) spinal position or simply don’t have the space to house both a bed AND a sofa – the adjustable bed is the new lifestyle choice for you. One more step in the pursuit of leisure, pleasure and divine comfort!

Comfort Relief

The sum total of the design and engineering of a Carpe Diem bed assures that the right parts are in just the right places. Cape Diem’s unique secret to comfort is a pocket spring system set together with a special pressure-relieving bottom absorber that makes our segment support system weight sensitive, thereby allowing the mattress to conform closely to the contours of the body while providing support in the firmness desired under controlled spring rebound. The body feels less pressure on the protuberances such as the shoulders and hip areas delivering straighter support to the spine and even distribution across the mattress surface. As a result, the contours of the body find relaxed comfort creating the ideal condition for a well-rested body and the healthy feeling if rejuvenation.

Craftsmanship Carpe Diem luxury beds are personally signed by the master craftsman who finishes the product. Skilled eyes and hands test components and completed assemblies to give Carpe Diem beds certified results for uncompromised luxury. Each step of handwork is controlled to ensure conformance to exacting standards. Master craftsman practice their trade of producing exclusive beds with every delivery to our valued clientele. We have over 60 years experience building beds.We have preserved our traditions from the earlier days within the town of Kinna. The result has become a range of beds firmly based on traditional values that have been developed to cope with

todays demands for comfort, durability and value for money. Skilled seamstresses and craftsman all exert a lobour of love to see that every bed from Kinnabädden is built with utmost quality care and

workmanship. We use skilled handymen and women where required and utilise modern production assemblies everywhere else. This is how we have gone about the task of producing quality at a price

that makes it possible for every one to enjoy a Scandinavian bed.

Waking up with the right feeling. That peaceful feeling you get after a good night’s sleep - where does it come from? Do you ever stop to reflect over just why you are feeling so good when you wake up? Like everything is just so? Maybe you

recently fell in love, or went on holiday. It is possible you are anticipating a promotion, or maybe holding the winning lottery ticket! All great reasons to wake up with that ‘right feeling,’ though most

likely it is because you have enjoyed a good night’s sleep in a bed with true Scandinavian comfort.

Firm or Soft beds? The old preconception that a firm bed is good for bad backs is a myth which we would like to strike from the recordbooks. The idea came to being because we so often slept in beds with bad or worn-out springs. What is actually best for you and your body is to sleep comfortably. Listen to what your

body is telling you and allow us to help find a bed to suit your personal contours and shape.

The “Zero Gravity” or “Neutral Spine” Position Astronauts are put through extreme measures in order to qualify whether their bodies are physically and mentally capable of handling being shot out of our atmosphere in a rocket travelling at 17,500mph. This is why NASA has designed reclining chairs for use during take-off. This zero gravity position reduces the amount of force exerted on the spine by the extreme speed necessary to reach escape velocity. When all three natural curves of the spine are present in the neck (cervical), middle (thoracic) and lower (lumbar) regions, we have attained “good posture” or a “neutral spine” position. The word “posture” come from the Latin verb ponere which is defined as “to put or place,” or “when the joints are not bent and the spine is aligned and not twisted” as defined in Webster’s New World Medical Dictionary.

Good posture optimises breathing and positively affects the blood circulation, the organ’s processes and other bodily functions. The risk of injury and instances of lower back pain are also greatly reduced when putting good posture into practice

Research suggests that many problems with the back result from a combination of poor posture and body mechanics, creating abnormal stress on the spine. This stress can eventually develop into structural changes in the spine, manifesting as disc and joint degeneration, shortening or lengthening of support ligaments and muscles together with wear and tear on cartilage. When the spine is left in a non-neutral posture for extended periods of time, it raises the diaphragm, preventing the body from taking a full

breath. This can lead to reduced oxygenation throughout the body which compromises the internal organs’ performance by putting extra pressure on the abdomen. In an upright standing or sitting position, gravity places pressure on the spine causing discs to compress and spinal muscles to contract to maintain balance. You can even lose up to an inch in height by the end of the day through such as gravity takes its toll! When we lie down, the body is affected by gravity differently than when we are upright. A good mattress allows you to maintain a neutral position; muscles are relaxed, and sleep is more refreshing. Relaxing in one of our adjustable lifestyle beds in a zero gravity position has many great effects on your body: reduced spinal pressure, relief of muscle tension, improved blood circulation, decreased heart pressure, expanded lung capacity for deeper breathing and raised blood/oxygen levels. Take the time to take care of your body - sitting for only 5 minutes in this position will have noticeable, rejuvenate effects – especially for those suffering with back problems! So take 5, and take a real load off – to relieve all pressure from your lower back & allow your senses to renew, and your mind to rest and be at peace.
