by Stewart GreenTHE Royal British Legion led the Remembrance Day ceremony in Sandbach this year. After assembling at Westfields various groups and dignitaries marched into the town for the parade and service. The procession was led by the Roberts Bakery Band with the Lions Youth Band playing at the War Memorial. Reg Dunning of the Sandbach British Legion gave readings as part of the outdoor service along with Rev Thomas Shepherd. A member of the Roberts
Bakery Band then played the Last Post just before the two minutes silence. Representatives from numerous local groups then laid wreaths at the memorial. Hundreds turned out to mark the event in the town and paid their respects to the fallen in conflicts all round the world from WW1 to the latest missions. It is 93 years since the memorial was unveiled on April 16 1922 by Lieut Colonel John Kennedy of the Black Watch. It cost £900 at the time and stands on the site of the second Sandbach Town Hall.

Create unique designs tailored to your individual tastes TWO men had to be cut free from wreckage following a three-car collision in Sandbach. The incident happened on the Wheelock Bypass at 6.30am on Saturday November 14. Firefighters at the scene found two men trapped in the cars and used special cutting equipment to free them. Ambulance crews were also at the scene.
CHESHIRE East Council leaders want a five-year funding commitment from the Government before they agree to take on Syrian refugees. Whitehall is offering to meet the council’s resettlement costs for 12 months, but the authority will wait to see if this is
expanded in the autumn. Sandbach Labour councillor Sam Corcoran said: “I am mindful of the council finances. But I recognise when people are dying, sometimes you need to be bold and commit first, and worry about the details and money later.”
SANDBACH fire cadets are back from Nepal after helping to finish a school they raised money for. The Cheshire Fire Cadets met the children who will now benefit from the newly built school in the village of Thulodhunga in the Basa region, and were there for the official opening ceremony. The school is constructed from brick and is a safe and clean learning environment which doesn’t compare to the tents they have previously used following the earthquake six months previously. The group flew to Kathmandu
and trekked on foot through the Himalayas, to get to the village of Thulodhunga, where the school had already been built by local people. The cadets set to painting walls, cleaning windows and floors and putting up notice boards before designing and painting a mural on the side of the building, with their names on it. During their time in Nepal the group spent time with the villagers and learnt about a different culture. They ate Yak meat and cheese with the locals and also visited a stupa, which is a Buddhist monument.
A SANDBACH charity has launched a project to make the railway network safer for vulnerable children. Railway Children has joined forces with the British Transport Police to develop the Safeguarding Children on Transport programme. The scheme aims to enhance transport staff’s awareness of vulnerable youngsters using trains and to identify appropriate responses. Every five minutes a child runs away from home in the UK and it is estimated that 16,500 children are at risk of sexual exploitation every year, Railway Children researchers have found. Last year British Transport Police received around 6,000 reports of child safeguarding incidents at railway stations around the UK. The most common incidents were of children running away or having been reported missing, suspected of or a victim of crime, or simply considered to be at risk.
Charity chief executive Terina Keene said: “Children often behave in ways we perceive to be troublesome, but this can be the result of things that have happened, or are happening, to them. “By enhancing the awareness of railway staff and retailers at stations, we can create a network of people who understand, identify and support children who are vulnerable or at risk across the railways.” BTP Assistant Chief Constable Mark Newton said: “Staff play a vital role in spotting and reporting unusual behaviour. “They can be our ‘eyes and ears’ as they go about their day-to-day work by providing us with the information we need to recognise signs of vulnerability or potential exploitation. “We all have a responsibility to look after children and whilst these incidents are rare, if you see something that doesn’t feel right, please report it to us, however small or insignificant you may think it is.”
THE number of people living in Cheshire East claiming Jobseeker’s Allowance has fallen – continuing a two-year downward trend. The latest figures, released by the Office for National Statistics, show that 1,565 people were claiming the benefit in October, compared with 1,592 in the previous month.

Sun powerSOLAR panels have being fitted to the roof of the Westfields council building. The investment of just under £50,000 will be paid back within six and a half years and will have a predicted 20 year cumulative financial benefit to the council of around £200,000.

SANDBACH RUFC fell just short in a wet and windy contest at home to Scunthorpe. The home side lost 14-17 on the day, succumbing to the difficult conditions and a Scunthorpe penalty kick two minutes from time. The weather spoilt what could
have been an entertaining encounter but with Scunthorpe generally having the upper hand in the set pieces, they always looked more likely to grind out the win. Both sides struggled for fluency, with a string of handling errors throughout.
Scunthorpe took an early lead with a drop goal and extended this with a catch and drive try from a lineout. Enterprising Sandbach though came back into the game hitting Scunthorpe on the counterattack. The second half saw
Sandbach under pressure in the scrum and struggling in lineout but generally defending well. But with the score level near the end of the game Sandbach managed to give away a penalty. Up stepped fullback Johnson to seal victory for the visitors.
