From Charlie Wilkins, President,
ACBL Unit 383 A hearty thank you to everyone that helped make the 499er Sectional the last weekend in February another success. Special thank you to Tom Carr who managed the logistics and volunteers, and to Sandy Lemon for assuring fees were collected and bills got paid. And, of course, there were those intrepid players who shoveled out their cars and made it to play on Saturday morning! It takes a village to pull together and make our Unit-sponsored events successful year after year. We look forward to your willing support as we plan for our Annual Spring Sectional in May.
Charlie
From Sally Sabo, President,
Santa Fe (Leonard Helman) Bridge Center Slow play is the bane of directors and many players. Of course we want players to have time to think through their actions and not feel hurried. One helpful option is to lead before marking the contract in the score card. Same with the dummy. Placing the cards on the table before dummy records the contract is a simple and effective way to speed up the game. It also gives declarer more time to contemplate how the play will go. We encourage directors to give a “late play” to pairs whose slow play affects the movement for the entire room. This happens very seldom thankfully. If you are asked to play the last hand after the game is over, just remember that the director is just trying to make the game go smoothly for the enjoyment of all the players.
Sally
Director's Notebook Irregularities: It is important to call the director regarding any irregularity, question, or rude and intimidating behavior. Simply say, "Director please." Do not discuss the issue, but wait for the director to come. (Remember that the dummy cannot call the director during play of the hand.) Calling the director and waiting for him/her to come to the table will eliminate most issues and make for a harmonious atmosphere. The director is there to help.

I/N* Tip of the Month from Kathy Adelsheim
MARCH 2019
SUIT QUALITY
Suit Quality is a convenient way to evaluate the strength of a suit. You add the number of cards in the suit plus the number of honors and the total is the quality of the suit.
Examples: A K J X X 5 cards plus 3 honors= 8
Q J X X X X 6 cards plus 2 honors= 8 K X X X X 5 cards plus 1 honor= 6
K Q X X X 5 cards plus 2 honors= 7
This is a handy way to help you decide if the suit is strong enough to overcall or make a pre-emptive bid. Standard bidding suggests a 5 card or longer suit should have 7 or 8 Quality Points to overcall. Discuss this with your partner so you are both on the same page.
*Intermediate/Newcomers (I/N) players is generally defined by ACBL as players with less than 500 masterpoints and includes a spectrum of playing skills from novice to intermediate/advanced

Modern Bridge III:
Defense Your instructor is Art McHaffie: a Gold Life Master experienced in tournament and club
play. Art has been directing and teaching bridge on high-end cruise ships like Silversea,
Crystal and Regent since 2005. Art likes to work with advancing intermediate and beginning players to help them improve their bridge play and results.
In the Defense lessons, Art will help the defenders analyze the information available
about each hand and plan a defense to defeat the declarer’s plan for the hand. Each week, a new topic will be introduced with a brief PowerPoint presentation followed by the
opportunity for each class participant to “defend” real hands vs. real opponents where they can apply the principles they have just learned.
The recommended text is ACBL’s Defense in the 21st Century which is available at Baron
Barclay and Amazon. In order to get the most out of the lessons, students should read relevant sections of the text in advance.
Discussion topics include:
Standard opening leads from length or strength.
Rule of Eleven to analyze your partner’s lead. Third hand play and second hand play.
Attitude signals. Count signals.
Suit preference signals.
